Are you still itching? Maybe you have candida albicans. Last year I kept breaking out in an itchy rash in the places that you mentioned and couldn't figure out what was causing it. I did some research and found out that it was from candida albicans. I took some probiotics and haven't had any symptoms since.

Jeremy,
What is your take on Designer Whey's Glycerlean? They market it as a "slow-release" protein powder, in addition to adding glutamine. Are these just claims to get you to buy their product? We used to use Glycerlean a few years ago and stopped (can't remember why). Just wondering if it would be worth it to keep some on hand for the occasional bedtime shake.

Dear Jeremy,
What if you have a protein shake (say myopro whey) which only has a few grams of carbs(i think 2), is that still not recommended?
Thank you

Body for Life Forum Message by BFLTrainer (12 posts) at 12:51 PM
Hmmm, before we start having a fit about maltodextrin...
1.What happens when you add protein+fats to a high glycemic carb?
It decreases the amout of insulin response to that carb. So, provided you don't eat straight maltodextrin you should be fine.
2.What MRP did most of the EAS champions drink during the challenge?
MYOPLEX! With all that evil maltodextrin how did they ever manage to get in shape?
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2993 posts) at 02:35 PM
I think the point was that maltodextrin was the reason that Myoplex wasn't a good before-bed meal. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (129 posts) at 03:09 PM
Exactly J-Dub. I will still use myoplex..I love the stuff. I am just a little pissed over these legal loopholes in food labeling. I guess I cant blame EAS. They are a business and thus must make a profit. To stay competative, they must compete with other companies that use these loopholes as well.
Body for Life Forum Message by BFLTrainer (12 posts) at 03:29 PM
It's that evil FDA..lol
Body for Life Forum Message by NaturalPhysiques (145 posts) at 04:49 PM
I've told a few people that in private messages. Overall, Myoplex is a good meal replacement. The idea is to use it as a supplement, not as a staple in the diet. A whole food carb is always going to be superior to maltodextrin or other shake carbs, because of more than the glycemic index - there are nutritients, phytochemicals, and other components as well to consider.
I would say you want something more high quality and slower digesting before bed, and during the day try to stick with as much whole foods as possible. The shakes are a convenience item.
The champs all drank Myoplex because a condition of being a champ is to endorse the products. That doesn't mean Myoplex is wrong, but it also means if you meet the champs in person and speak to them outside of their contract endorsements, you might find their success had more to do with other components of the program than the supplements they used. :)

Allright. How the heck did you learn about all this stuff anyway? I mean, I know Bill gives us some basics in BFL...but what other sources are you using for your information? I ask because I would like to be as well informed so I can make better choices.
I bought Designer Whey and also EAS Advant Edge Carb Control Ready-to-drink (strawberry cream...ymmm). Maybe that's why they satisfy my sweet tooth?
The Advant Edge ingredients are: filtered water, protein blend (soy protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, and calcium caseinate), sunflower oil, ....the very last ingredients are maltodextrin, sucralose (Splenda brand), acesulfame potassium, carrageenan, dextrose, lecithin, red#3 an blue#1.
Course, I can't pronounce a few of those last ones...or know what the heck they are. Or why I need to drink a color?
Body for Life Forum Message by NaturalPhysiques (145 posts) at 07:19 PM
I learned through several ways. I'm a certified Specialist in Performance Nutrition, a Certified Fitness Trainer, and have dedicated the last 5 years to researching nutrition and training so that I can give my clients and customers the best, honest, most direct information possible.
The major issue with nutrition right now is most people "learn" it through web searches, and land on articles that sound great and think they are absorbing good knowledge, when in fact they are simply finding well positioned "info-ads."
Unfortunately, the number of people who gain their Ph.D. in Google far outweighs those who learn biochemistry, anatomy, biology, and the science behind nutrition, so it's very difficult to get valid information.
In fact, I can't compete with the billion dollar milk advertising industry. People are beginning to realize that getting calcium from dairy is an oxymoron (dairy is fortified with calcium, the calcium in dairy isn't the best utilized, and ironically, dairy INCREASES the body's demands for calcium, so it's like getting water from a bucket with a hole in it) and that the billion dollar campaigns that used scare tactics to make women believe they'd have brittle, breaking bones if they didn't consume a ton of dairy are starting to wear out.
So, of course, launch a new campaign based on the current trend for losing weight, and claim calcium helps you lose fat. If you look at the studies that show this, you'll find they're all funded by the companies selling dairy products. If you dig even deeper, you'll find that despite the massive dairy consumption in the US, overweight and obesity is on the rise (in a few years, I won't be surprised when poor diet and lack of exercise surpasses tobacco as the #1 preventable cause of death - it was #2 in 2000) - which hardly supports and argument that all this dairy supports weight loss.
The same thing is happening with the supplement industry. You only have to look at pictures of physiques before the 70s to realize there were lean, well muscled individuals long before protein powders became popular.
In fact, the reason I brought up the dairy industry is because it's campaigns are linked to what most people believe about protein. You see, in the 70s, the dairy industry had a major problem. They were dumping a waste product called "whey" into landfills. The government decided this was toxic and fined the industry and charged them with finding a new method for disposing of their waste.
So, the dairy industry found a perfect solution: sell the whey to the food industry. This became a filler for many products, you can still pick up just about anything in the processed section of the food store and find whey somewhere in the ingredients.
When the supplement industry began gaining momentum, they figured out that they could fund a lot of research and promote this as a powerful supplement, and begin selling whey. Of course, if you want to sell a lot of protein powder, you have to convince everyone that they need a lot of protein.
Hence, everyone now believes they must eat protein. They feel extra protein turns into muscle and not fat.
What most people don't realize is that even when you train perfectly and gain muscle, you are literally only using a few grams of protein to build muscle tissue. The rest of it is being burned for energy, used to manufacture hormones, etc.
This doesn't mean whey protein is bad or that you don't need protein. However, if you get past the websites and advertising and look at the actual research, the most protein scientifically shown to benefit an athlete is about 1.6 grams per pound of body weight, and that is in elite soccer athletes who are training for hours a day. That translates to about 0.72 grams per pound.
You will still find all of the experts recommending 1 gram or more per pound, but if you really try to trace it to something other than sponsored bodybuilders selling protein products, you'll be hard pressed to find any support.
I'm not against protein powders or shakes. However, I think people place far too much weight on them as having an impact. They are a convenience, nothing more or less. They don't magically burn fat or support muscle gain ... in fact, despite the endorsements for high protein products, most of the natural bodybuilders I know get the bulk of their protein from whole foods.
And I'm not saying higher protein is not important for muscle mass. Most of the natural bodybuilders take in a LOT of protein. But they also train far more intensely than most BFL workouts can approach, and their training is designed based on their body and their competition cycle - it's not a cookie cutter solution, but a very customized and scientifically designed routine, so they gain more benefit from the extra protein intake. Don't forget that a lot of the people with 22" biceps saying "Eat xxxx whey" are also using a little illegal support from steroids on the side.
So, what it really boils down to, in my opinion, is simply this:
1. Eat as many whole, unprocessed foods as you can - nothing engineered will ever beat a nice steak and a few cups of green beans with wild rice or a chicken breast in a whole wheat pita with a large mixed greens salad.
2. When choosing bars or protein powder, focus more on "natural" than whether it has 500 grams of protein. Get bars with fiber. Then, find something that tastes good and fits within your budget, rather than trying to split hairs on the exact protein blend or special kitchen sink ingredients they are trying to charge you $5 per bar extra for loading.
3. If possible, skip all the shakes with the extra vitamins and minerals. This throws off the balance and most are buying low quality sprays that are inserted just so they can say "100% of this or that" on the label so people feel better about them. These blends will never compare to the combination of whole foods and a high quality multivitamin.
Again, that's just my opinion. Understand I am always learning, and I contradict myself today from things I said three years ago. I'd rather bite my tongue and admit to being wrong, however, than to hide the things I find out as I learn more about the industry and what is REALLY important about losing weight and keeping it off.

Yes, hemp oil is great. It has a nice balance. Flax oil has the most concentrated source of omega-3, but some people overcompensate with that. A blend or something balanced like hemp is definitely a good approach.

Flax seed oil, and fish oil...are these silly to take together, is it redundant? Also, on the whole nut thing, is there one nut that is better than another to consume for fat???
Thanks again.
Christie
Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (518 posts) at 02:26 AM
You probably don't need to take both the flax and fish. If you are concerned with getting all the Omega's (3,6,and 9) try an oil such as Udo's. It doesn't taste horrible and contains all three.
As for nuts, I know you should stay away from macademia nuts. They are pretty high in saturated fat. Almonds are supposed to pretty good, as are peanuts, and I think cashews. Costco sells some really good almond and cashew butter....a nice change of pace from the peanut butter.

chevron, just curious, how many almonds do you eat for your meal? (I realize I can't necessarily go on your amount since I am female and probably smaller than you.) For one of my meals I ate 8-10 almonds and a piece of fruit, but I checked the EAS book and found no mention of nuts or almonds in the index, and I read hussman.org's answer to "can I sprinkle chopped nuts on my yogurt" (his answer begins with "sigh. . ." as if he's exasperated at the mere thought of eating nuts).
I just wasn't sure if nuts were a good idea on a once a day basis or not, and if they are ok, how many. (probably not a fistful!)
Body for Life Forum Message by annie1104 (78 posts) at 09:51 AM
Pistachios!! Nuts (the ones Melanie listed, in moderation) are good for you . I count mine out and only have about 15 almonds or 25 pistachios and just eat them occasionally because they are still high in calories.

The instructions say to mix 2 scoops into 4oz of water. Does it make any difference if you mix it into a protein shake with milk or something? Not that I mind it in the 4oz of water, but I thought it would taste really good in a vanilla protein shake. :) I just wonder if it alters its effectiveness at all.
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (129 posts) at 08:13 AM

If thats what it is you can tell by the smell. It smells very wierd, and it's the same smell, no matter what they have eaten. Also, a stool sample sent to the lab could confirm.

I'm wondering if you had suffered a stroke or spinal injury and were focusing as much of your attention on trying to walk again as you are focusing your attention on getting fit, whether they would consider that ungodly, too. Normal people spend a lot of time walking around, just like fit people spend a lot of time doing the things that keep them fit, but they don't need to have it consume a large portion of their attention. Some day your fitness activities may become as automatic as walking and won't require as much conscious planning. Until then I don't think it's any worse to obsess about it than it would be for that stroke/spinal cord injury victem to obsess about walking. You are in rehab. It takes what it takes, and you are incorporating God into it. You are relying on him for strength and perseverence and faith. You're celebrating him, not pulling away from him.

MM - Thanks! Good point and perspective!
In my book, when you're 160 lbs overweight and sick you treat it as nothing less than a medical emergency - because it is!!!
Think about others who must also be considered 'obsessed and ungodly' according to the logic of these friends: all pro football and baseball players, all triathletes, all Olympic athletes, etc... Seems to me they are actually being quite 'obsessed and ungodly' themselves by constantly overreating and letting their bodies go...and they know this. They just don't want to deal with it...

May I recommend a book called Boundaries, you may have heard of it, by Cloud and Townshend I believe, great book, really addresses the issue I believe a lot of us have in that we don't have or place any boundaries on our relationships..it is healthy to place limitations and say that x and y are inappropriate and will not be tolerated but z is okay with me..you get the point, but I know what it is like to have "godly" friends who remind you more of enemies the way they [feel they have the right to] treat you..

Can you believe such a comment?! The nerve she has to imply that I'm faking the disability! And she knows better! she has seen me suffer for years and she also knows that I'm a very ambitious person! Not exactly someone exhibiting the fruits of the Holy Spirit!!!
However, the other friend, her brother has recently admitted that he needs to do better in his friendships and so far has stopped crossing those boundaries...so we'll see, but for now I just have to make sure I take care of me...
Thanks again...
Jim

Sounds like she's been watching too much Dr. Phil. Isn't that one of his sayings "How's it working for ya?"
Change is difficult to do, and seemingly even more difficult for those close to you to accept. I have one friend who just rolls her eyes when I try to talk to her about BFL. I think it's partly because it reminds her that she's not excercising or eating right and she doesn't want to face it. Much easier to just put me down for my efforts and try to get me to quit so we can BOTH be fat and lazy. : )
Anyway...sometimes, you just stay away from the people that can't support you. I got rid of all the "fixers" in my life...the ones that wanted to fix me but never looked at their own life. Who needs 'em. Gotta do what is best for you, and that includes surrounding yourself with people who have your best interest in mind. True friends care and tell it like it is, but sounds more like they just want to bring you down...not "get real" as Dr. Phil says.
: )

Quartertrot-- Sounds like you know her!
Can you imagine how she must feel being about 40lbs overweight (at 5' 2") and seeing someone 'with an excuse to be overweight' losing so much weight?!!! It certainly shoots down any excuses she has been making about why she can't lose weight!
She has admitted that she's a 'fixer' and had vowed to back off from that compulsion but she still starts most of her sentences with "You need to..." and who the Hell needs that?!!! Not me!
Thanks again!

I'm having difficutly understanding what she is refering to as it "working for you". Does she mean you're milking the disability thing for attention? Money? I thought the problem she was having was that she didn't like that you were doing things to overcome the disability.
It DOES sound Dr. Phil-ish, but possibly misapplied. In some ways I can see yes it works well as a topic of conversation for you. Holding onto it as a framework around which to base your choices is working for you too--in that having identified a serious problem you are able to live a happier, more active life by responding to it. I think she's less accusing you of faking disability as using it as a crutch to get sympathy, personal affirmation, and get people to do what you want them to. Now I'M not saying you're doing this. I don't know you personally. You might be, you might not be. You might be doing it a little and the fact that she is uncomfortable about her own level of fitness is making her supersensitive about it. Personally I see nothing wrong with wanting a little affirmation for the hurdles your conquering. Of course I'm a bit of an attention seeker myself.
Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1031 posts) at 01:44 PM
MM -- She thinks I'm taking advantage of the disability and that if I lost it, I would be forced to be 'responsible' and get a job. She hasn't directly said that but it is obvious she thinks that.
I think she thinks that if I can exercise, then I should be working. She overlooks the fact that I don't have the energy or endurance to do much more than my workouts. If I went back to work right now, I would lose my job in a matter of weeks because I'm just not up to it physically yet... She doesn't get it that the most responsible thing for me to do right now is to make my health top priority...
My doctor has repeatedly warned me about trying to work anytime in the foreseeable future. He doesn't think my body can hold up to even part-time work right now...He agrees with me that the best thing to do is get down to a normal weight and then after 6 months of normal hormone lab tests - then and not until then to consider returning to work. My other doctor doesn't think I'll be able to ever return to my computer career because of the stress...
And actually, I don't call attention to myself and I detest any sympathy. But when I don't make it to church or a social event or whatever, she always wants an explanation. So I then tell her what is going on with the illness. Sometimes she accepts that but many times she acts as if she thinks it's just a flaw in my character and that I'm just using the illness as an excuse. Frankly, the last thing I want to dicuss with her is my illness...you can see why!
I'm very good at being self-sufficient without much or any support from others - perhaps too much so at times. I don't crave attention or even expect any praise, however, I won't accept blatant disrespect, especially from someone who claims to be a friend...
Again...great feedback!
Like I said before..Who needs Dr. Phil? I got you guys!
Thanks,
Jim

Change the way you pay your bill to a credit card. Much easier and cheaper to dispute. Like guitargoddess said, they can charge you as long as they were given permission, but at least its not taking money out of your bank, risking overdrafts. AOL is famous for 'phantom' billing. GL

Thanks, everyone. I'm not even quite sure how they got that account number, because I have been paying my AOL account on another check card for almost 6 months.
Hopefully things will work out!

Happens all the time people open accounts in other peoples name without their knowledge, report it to your local Police Dept. and have AOL send you an affidavit form for you to sign saying that you did not make the purchase or authorize the charges. You may want to see if AOL has some sort of security dept, or fraud dept. If anything ever occurs on line you can also file a complaint with the Internet Fraud Complaint Center and file a complaint, see this with alot of ebay scams. http://www.ifccfbi.gov/strategy/pressroom.asp

I guess this should go in the off-topic forum. I was curious if anyone out there knew what a trainer in a gym gets paid. If possible, I would like to know a ballpark figure for just starting out and one for a trainer who has been doing it for a while. Thanks,Chuck

you really need to be careful, at the club in my little town, I made $12 a class for teaching Aerobics and 2 of the so called P T were talking about making $10 for just 45 minutes, and they were jerks, I actually know more then they do, I really don't think they were certified, so ask questions before you hire a PT, ok! just a suggestion, I know they have alot of rip off;s out there!
Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (2062 posts) at 12:50 PM
From what I have heard cause mine is leaving the gym scene ;-( but they give you a flat rate and also they are big on the sell, sell, sell, stuff so thats the big companies world.
On your own you can make between $45-60 per hour depending on your speciality and certification and basically your resume. Most charge $45-50 it is very rare that I see $60.

I agree with what's already been posted.
I guess the real question for you is if you want to train on your own or work through a gym. If you work through a gym, the gym normally gets a certain % of your sales.
So, if you represent yourself and get your own clients, you can make more money.
Hope this helps.

PS--go to salary.com and see if they offer this field in your geographical region. It may give you some ball park figures.

Are you planning on being an average trainer, or above average? The average trainer earns anywhere between 10k - 25k per year. It's not a high paying job. But that's just for those who are average and just looking to make a buck.
If you are passionate about it and provide a quality service and think outside of the box, then you can earn in excess of six figures ... I know a few who are multi-millionaires.
For example, if I were to work at the local YMCA, I would earn maybe about $15 - $20 per hour. For one of my coaching packages that isn't published, however, I am hired for 12 weeks of phone support and to fly out to the client and spend two days on site. Those packages can exceed $5,000 (remember, they include phone support, workout design, nutrition, airfare and lodging expenses, etc).
You also have to work backwards ... instead of looking at the position and considering salary, think of what you want to do and accomplish ... are you looking to generate income, do you want to make a difference, are you passionate about fitness? If that is the case, don't jump straight to the career. Instead, look at your desires, passions, and dreams, and explore the variety of ways you can accopmlish them ... prioritize and find what works.
For me, for example, the dream was sharing health and wellness, but as a trainer, I couldn't make it work because I was trading time for money and my IT job was always taking the time away from being able to generate the money.
When I refocused on the goal, rather than the "job," I was able to find leveraged ways like the website, network marketing, etc to make a difference and move closer to my dreams by looking beyond just face-to-face coaching.

Thanks everyone for your help. While I do really enjoy learning about nutrition and would love to help others begin their journey to a healthier life, I'm just not sure I would be able to do it. .
Jeremy, I really respect your commitment to helping others. This is your job and you get paid to hand out the information you enlighten us with every day for free. That really says a lot about you.
I work in the IT industry myself as a computer programmer. I can’t say I love my job that much which is part of the reason I posted this thread. I get paid well in the field that I am in and I’m just not sure I could match it being a trainer. I know money isn’t everything but I love gadgets. :) I am an introverted person by nature and I believe that one needs to be extraverted to be successful in personal training.
Another thing I have against me is the fact that I really don’t like to write. I’m not that bad at it, I just don't care for doing it. I wish I could write as well as you Jeremy. Thanks for taking the time to read my ramblings.
Sincerely,
Chuck

We have something in common! I was in IT for 10 years. I was actually Director of IT for a major web software development firm. I walked away from that salary and illusion of security to pursue my passion.
I can tell you this ... I don't know if you have a family or not, but the time home with my daughter outweighs anything any type of salary or gadget can provide.
Thanks for the compliment regarding my writing ... I appreciate that. I believe there are many great writers here, yourself included, because to me, the essence of writing is writing from the heart.

has anyone noticed a difference in the ability to lose weight on antidepressants? I know I need them. I've been in this place before and I know I need something in the pill form to haul me out..ha. I just want to know if anyone has noticed if their weight loss has slowed or anything because of them.
At this point I'd rather be fat and happy, but if I can be happy while getting thin, that would be better...lol. Any thoughts?

I used Zyban to try and quit smoking, and it is actually Wellbutrin, an antidepressant. I actually lost a few pounds. My FIL was on Wellbutrin, and he lost weight too. That is the only one that I know has that effect, makes you a little wakey-wakey too! Good for the HIIT if nothing else!

I think there is a difference in the antidepressents... obviously if you've used something before that worked for you, you want to stick with that... but some are more known than others for weight gain issues (it depends on which neurotransmitter the rx is working on I believe, serotonin or dopamine). Also depends I think on the person... I think at the end of the day your body still can't hang onto the weight if you are working it off (i.e. calorie deficit is still going to add up to weight lost)... might take a bit longer to kick it into weight loss mode... That's my opinion... based on my personal experience. PS -- 4 weeks in I've lost 4.5 lbs, but I think personally I wasn't eating enough before and the extra calories (combined w/ better carb/protein mix and more appropriate exercise plan) are freeing up my body to shed some weight...
Body for Life Forum Message by allicat (19 posts) at 06:41 PM
Speaking as a future pharmacist (graduating next year), it depends on which medication you're on. Some can cause quite a bit of weight gain, for example amitriptyline (Elavil), mirtazapine (Remeron), etc. Bupropion (Wellbutrin or Zyban) is the most weight neutral antidepressant. The SSRIs (Paxil, Celexa, Zoloft, Prozac etc.) kind of fall in the middle. Everyone responds differently though.
Body for Life Forum Message by mail4tammy (96 posts) at 07:47 PM
if you do not mind me asking, which one are you on? I am currently taking Lexapro 10g and i have gained 20lbs. on them. The only advice i can give is that we all have different experiences with a ssri. I have done a ton of research on this because i want answers too. This is my theory. Some gain, some loose and others stay at the weight they are. Your body chemistry is going to respond differently to each SSRI. I have tried taking Effoxer and Paxil in the past and i gained with those also. Even after extensive exercise and watching my calories. I know a lot of people do well on Wellbutrin though, but it did not work for my depression. But then again i did not wait long enough for the stuff to work, i got so discouraged waiting, so the dr. put me on something eles. I started the B4L program back in Feb. and was not able to finish because my husband almost died in a motorcycle accident and i did not continue it. I did however continue to watch what i ate and did my cardio and weight training and i have gained weight. I really do think that i have gained muscle because i measured and i have lost a few inches. For me though i am weaning off Lexapro because i am tired of fighting weight gain, it just hurts me sooo much. I try and try again and i cant get the weight off. I am going to try Fish oil or flax seed or 5htp or Sam-e or something, not sure at this point. But good luck to you and i know you will find a lot of support on this board. There are a few others on here that are fighting mental challenges and are using the the B4L program instead of drugs to help them and are doing well, that is what i am going to do.

You all give such good advice and I need some right now. My son, an 11 year old 5th grader, was convinced by his "friend" at school to buy him a book at the book fair on Friday. My son, bought a $13 book for this kid, with his own money. The kid said he would pay back my son this week. This kid was out sick Tues and Wed and today was the last day school and the kid didn't have the $$....surprise.
So, my instinct is telling me to chalk it up to a lesson learned, tough one, but hopefully my son won't be giving away his money so freely anymore.
On the other hand, if my son did this to another kid, I'd want to know.
The dilema is should we call this kids parents or just let it be?
Body for Life Forum Message by tallscubagirl (234 posts) at 03:17 PM
I'd let it be. Explain to your son not to be so trusting with his money when it comes to other kids. If he did it in charity and he knew the kid couldn't pay him back, will you have a great kid with a big heart.
Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (518 posts) at 03:43 PM
My stepson does the same thing. He's in 3rd grade and has been known to give away his lunch more than once. He's also used his lunch money to buy another child's lunch who he claims doesn't get to eat because his parents don't have money.
We've talked to him about it and while he understand the goodwill gesture, he knows he can't do this on a regular basis. We can't afford to feed every school kid out there...we have enough financial problems. But it does make me feel good to know that he's got a good heart; just hope it won't bite him in the butt later (being taken advantage and all).
I probably wouldn't tell the other parent, unless it happens again.

Being the parent of a 10 and 7 year old, I would want to know if they borrowed $ and didn't pay it back. I would call the parents and tell them what happened but make it clear that I was not calling to collect, just to inform them.

I also agree with gp800mark. I would want to know! Also if the shoe was on the other foot, I would also wonder, how my child came home with a new book and had no money to buy it !
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (781 posts) at 05:03 PM
I've had the same thing happen with my 8 yr old, grade 3. I told her to go to back to school to return the book and give the money back to the friend who gave her the money. She told me no refunds. I told her to tell them I said so and tell her teacher what she'd done. Long story short, I spoke to the other child's mother (she was angry as well). Needless to say, no refund and I paid the money back. But by insisting my child make a commotion about what SHE had done, I was hoping it was a lesson learned for her. And I agree with gp800mark.

Is it uncomfortable for your son to call his friend... that way if the friend isn't home he can conveniently leave a message (with mom or on the machine..!) asking him to call about mailing him the $13 for the book... $13 is an awful lot of money for a kid that age!!! I'd pursue it that way before I'd let it go... even though it is difficult, he needs to see that he can indeed resolve something like this (I think?). Good luck
Body for Life Forum Message by ShineyHiney (118 posts) at 06:00 PM
I agree with gpMark and curvature. I would talk with the parents. I would not want my child to do something like that and me not know about it. Even if they don't give you the money, maybe they'll give your son the book he paid for. Surely though if your child came home with a new book wouldn't you ask them where they got the money to pay for it. That is if they have seen it.

I came home and noticed our UPS packages had arrived, two big boxes that I figured were pretty heavy. I came in, ate dinner, put my kid to bed and then went out to get the boxes and one was missing. It had about $300 of aquarium suplies in it that will be useful to nobody. I'm so angry.
I heard a noise and looked out the window and saw nothing but didn't realize until later what it must have been.

1/2 cup of oatmeal (grounded in the blender first).
Seasoning of your choice (eye ball it)

Fortunately for us, we have moved out of state and do not have that pressure anymore but when his grandmother visited, we fed her all EFL stuff and she was amazed at how good everything was and even sent her home with some recipes!
You could always ask for a plate to take home - this might help and you can save it for your free day or toss it with no one being the wiser!

I would recommend looking into ConsumerLabs.com for approved brands that passed their testing. Find something that is pharmaceutical grade. Also, don't buy into the myth that if your urine is bright, it means you are peeing out the vitamins. If the vitamins are being used, sometimes the urine is a byproduct of them being used.
Cheap vitamins are going to provide cheap results, and if you can't afford them, I would hold off until you can. I haven't found many quality products that are less than $15 - $20 for a one-month supply. That's really only $240 a year and most people blow more than that on movies, fast food, and other activities that don't benefit their health.
There is a great book, the Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements by Lyle MacWilliams, and anything in the top 10 there would be great.

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2993 posts) at 04:55 PM
Grilled or broiled chicken, fish or steak, no butter. Steamed veggies, most places you can specifically request no butter. Small (or half) baked potato, butter or sour cream on the side (the fat isn't the best, but a little won't kill you, unless you can ask for salsa or something to put on it).
You could also get a grilled chicken, steak or seafood salad. Dressing on the side, dip your fork before you stab the salad with it, lol.
Fajitas, hold the sour cream, use minimal (VERY minimal) cheese or guacamole, load up on veggies.

Most PLaces are pretty willing to accomodate.. if you ask for no dressing on a greensalad ..or no sauce on a plainveg side dish... even getting grilled chicken or steak is usually fairly easy to do...it's just the asking !....:)

Hi gang!
I have a wierd sleep cycle due to hormonal issues. It makes following the BFL eating schedule a little confusing...
For a few months my thyroid dosage was too high and I was going to sleep about 3AM, getting up at about 1PM. I wouldn't usually eat after midnight so often I would go for about 12 hours before eating again. I wonder if my metabolism didn't take a hit as a result.
The thryoid dosage seems to be correct now. I'm going to bed about 2AM and forcing myself to get up about 7AM. This is to help correct the sleep cycle. I'm too tired to exercise then so I eat breakfast and go back to bed about 10AM. I then get up about 1PM, do my exercise and then wait an hour to eat.
As a result, I'm having ny first meal between 7-8AM, my next meal around 3PM and then eating every 2-3 hrs until about 1AM.
Would sure like your feedback...and suggestions for making changes are appreciated!
Thanks,
Jim

This what I saw once on T.V. You have to see the pictures but I'll try to explain.
They showed the difference between male & female. Think of little threads attaching the skin to muscle. A woman's threads are lined up like soldiers, side by side, straight up and down. A males threads are criss crossed, think of a box of spilt toothpics, gathered up, they're not straight up and down but rather overlapping one another, but bunched together.
What happens is these threads break free and fat deposits collect in these breaks. A male first of all has less fat but when a few threads break there are the other overlapping ones that keep the skin attached and therefore you don't see a "pocket of fat" collection. A woman's threads break free and there is a pocket left with no threads holding the skin to the muscle leaving room for fat to collect. Keep in mind some of this is water too.
I know this might be hard to envision but I tried my best. I've had cellulite spots probably from the age of 12 - 14 and I definately was not overweight. I am now getting my bodyfat lower and lower but still, the same spots are there and actually one side being worse than the other.
I believe what I've read. You cannot fix this damage, you can reduce the fat deposit somewhat but you cannot repair this damage. No cream ever invented can penetrate all of the skin layers and get in there and actually repair what has happened. It truly is a shame that some manufacturers claim this is possible with their cream. It seems the higher the price tag for such nonsense, the more believable it is. Don't believe it.

I use the HIIT for both the bike and the rower. On the bike, I start with a level 1 at 80 rpm, then up to 90 then 100 rpm. During the next interval, I add a level 2; then a level 2 twice; for my 10, I add a level 3; I will keep working like that until I can do each interval at level 2, while adding more minutes of level 3. I see other people working on level 9 and 10, but I am no where near that.
I haven't figured out if the resistance can be altered on our rowing machine, so I have arbitrarily divided the calories/per/minute into 4 groups. 450, 500, 550, 600 (cal per min). I use those as my increases. My current goal is to increase the 600-650 range to more than one minute per session.
As Aunt Pitty said, the seats are the hardest part. We should give ourselves a 10 just for sitting on them for 20 minutes!

My left hamstring is permanently short. I can't stretch it nearly as far as my right. I try to use different stretches; stretch only until it hurts, then back off a touch to hold the stretch.
- sit on mat with your legs out front in a V shape. Bend over each leg and keeping your back straight, stretch each leg; grasp your ankle; lead with your chest so your back is not rounded
- sit on the mat with your legs out front in a straight line. Grasp your ankles and bend down as far as possible. This also stretches your calves.
- Put one leg on a bar or table or something high. Keeping your knees slightly flexed, bend over your high leg; again lead with your chest, so your back is not rounded.
- lying on your back, knees bent and feet on floor, place one foot on the other knee. Grasp the thigh of the bottom leg and pull thigh towards your body, lifting that foot off the mat; when you feel the other leg stretching hold for a few seconds.
Try a variety of hamstring stretches, because they all stretch at a different angle.

How does everyone get up and do their cardio in the morning? I managed to go for a run this morning and I didn't go nearly as far as I usually do. I usually do my run a few hours after dinner. I just have no energy in the morning. What do you think is better - to go early in the morning on an empty stomach, but not as hard, or go in the evening, but able to push myself harder?
TIA,
Sue

Sue, it may take a bit of time to adjust, but my opinion is (if your goal is to optimize fat burn) to go in the morning on an empty stomach. I would suggest EAS Kickstart if you have not already tried to help with the energy in the first am. Perhaps Jeremy (Natural Physiques) could offer his two cents as well; he is much more knowledgable than I. However, in the past I was told my fitness professionals you would burn fat 30% quicker than if you do later in the day after you have started eating. And although difficult to start, once you get into the routine, you will find it easier to do. If you cannot muster mornings at all, then try to go on an empty stomach (no eating prior to 2 hrs beforehand). Hope this helps.

Sue, I used to sleep in late, hit the snooze button a bizillion times, but now I get up at 5am to hit the gym first thing.
I had to start out slow and just start going to be earlier. Now I hit the sack at 9:30 at the latest every night.
It helps me relax before bed if I take a short brisk walk. It gets the blood flowin, but it also helps me sleep.
You just have to get used to early AM workouts, if that's what you want to do.
I picked early AM because it's the only SOLID time each day that I knew I could promise aside for working out. It has worked out great. I have more energy, I've made friends at the gym, and I get a lot more done each day.
I also took ThermoDynamx when I first started my early workouts. I don't take it anymore, but it really gave me a swift kick in the pants when I needed it.
You should do what works best for you of course. These are just my suggestions if you WANT to go to early AM workouts.
Danielle

I find myself getting up at 4:30am on Sat. and Sun. It is the only time of the day that I am garuanteed to myself, no kids, no wife, no phones, nothing going on but my Workouts.

What are some exercises that really work to get rid of inner thigh flab? I've only heard of cycling...
Body for Life Forum Message by gp800mark (211 posts) at 02:01 PM
To quote a previous post, "push offs". Push food off your plate. You can't spot reduce fat. But you can spot build muscles. Exercises that work the thigh muscles, squats, lunges, inner/outer thigh machine, etc. will help shape the muscles and tighten the skin.
Body for Life Forum Message by DDRTeddy (465 posts) at 02:06 PM
Place a small Swiss Ball centrally between your lower legs.
Smoothly squeeze the ball, aiming to apply pressure from both legs, onto the sides of the ball.
Hold in the inner phase for 2 - 3 seconds prior to releasing and repeating again.
This exercise can be performed either lying, seated or even standing, however if standing focus on keeping one leg firmly on the floor, whilst the other leg is used to apply pressure.

I work out at home, so I use ankle weights and I do inner and outer leg lifts. The weights that I have adjust from 2-10 lbs per leg. I think they are very effective for tightening things up.
Body for Life Forum Message by DDRTeddy (465 posts) at 02:11 PM
An excellent inner thigh workout can be done when climbing up the stairs. Stand sideways at the bottom of the stairs holding on to the railing for balance. Put your right foot on the first stair and cross your left leg over the right to get to the next stair. Continue till you reach the end of the stairs.

Thanks...now that I have this mp3 player that holds tons of songs, I have a hard time choosing playlists for working out...LOL!! But it's nice in the car because it's almost like having satellite radio (no commercials and you can choose dozens of genres to listen to).
I do have to send a thanks to whoever suggested Limewire. I have used WinMX for several years now because when I used to use Limewire, I was on *horrors* dial up! It would take absolutely forever and the songs would usually time out before they downloaded. But now that I'm on DSL, I download songs within a minute...it's GREAT!!! I added at least 50 songs in about 20 minutes (not counting the time it took to decide what songs I wanted). Limewire rocks (probably not completely "legal").

Hi,
I have an 11 month old and I have been working out since I had her. She was 100% breastfed until 7 months and has never taken formula. I have had NO problems with nursing butI have heard that if you do a big cardio workout the lactic acid can enter your milk and make it taste a bit sour. If that's true, my daughter does not mind. Maybe she also gets some of my workout endorphins.
One thing's for sure - as a Mom of two (a 4 1/2 year old and an 11 month old) working out keeps me sane and as a wise friend of mine once said 'You're doing your kids a big favor just by teaching them that working out is a part of your regular daily routine."
I do also make sure that my diet is very good and I love the fact that I have a bit of an advantage because I can eat that little bit more. My body does seem to be a metabolic "machine" right now.
I am planning to continue to nurse for at least the next 6 months.

I am still nursing my 10 month old and if the milk tastes funny, she doesnt seem to notice LOL I do know that I am careful about supplementation (don't use anything other than shakes and bars, and I don't use ones with aspartame) and that I had to stop taking CLA after I read on the question and answer part of body for life about it, bill phillips said a study done showed it decreased the amount of fat in the breastmilk by a lot (don't remember the percent) and not to use it if you are nursing..I have noticed my chest is still a lot bigger than it was before nursing but other than that I am losing weight and inches..not as fast as I would like, but it's coming..the other Susan (sushu) is a great inspiration to me, look how much weight she lost (and is still losing) with young kids at home like me..and I know there are plenty others out there.. :)

I don't want to have to put the burden on someone of getting my kids off to school, while I am lounging by the pool in a "thong". That is if I am "hott" by then.
Look I got my C3 before pics in yesterday, and I was so disappointed. Stopping smoking really put some weight back on me. I am scared to post them. Booty or anyone else in the BSH, I also need some extra fat burning tips if you have them.

I'm right back on track and eating super clean and watching my diet very closely :).
I've been regular for a long time, skipping 7 days between my periods is "not common" for me, so I really think it's related to my hard workouts and lower BF%.

Well, once I started BFL in January of 2005, I started 4 days late and then that was it! I did end up pregnant, but during the process of finding out I did speak with a nurse who said that when you drastically change your routine (couch potato to working out 6 x per wk) that it is very common for women to have their cycles adjusted and also become more fertile than normal (which is obviously what happened to me!). Being that TOM visited like clockwork, needless to say I was suspect to begin with. I later found out (based on size at sonogram) that my EDC (estimated date of conception) was also wrong, because I ovulated 11 days late. This was very unusual for me but obviously an adjustment in timing that I can only attribute to with BFL program. Best of luck.

After reading this, I also had an epiphany of my own. When I have thought of Body For LIfe in the past, I thought of the word life as defining a length of time. As in doing this program for life to maintain my body. It dawned on me this morning (and maybe a lot of you already think of it this way) that the word Life is actually a noun representing a more intrinsic goal. As in working hard to get a Body that will give you BACK your Life. I think Jim (jshelton) summed it up in his earlier thread about the emotional and familial costs of being in poor physical shape.
I know that I don't feel like I am truly experiencing Life when I am unhealthy and overweight. Now I feel like I have re-joined society.
Aim High, Live Life, Stay Strong, and do it for YOU!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Young Guns (995 posts) at 11:30 AM
I see a pretty big change in your mid section. One secret that I learned just very recently is try increasing your calories for a little bit. The way I acheved this is by adding more natural PB into my diet and I also began eating a little more carbs. I feel that I am appearing more "fuller" yet also leaner than just 2 weeks ago. Try it worst that can happen is it dosen't work.
Body for Life Forum Message by VegasGuy (60 posts) at 11:36 AM
Thanks Young Guns. I think you are right. I know that I have not been getting in enough meals (only averaging 4 per day). Even though I eat pretty clean, I think if I were eating more frequently that the fat around my midsection would come off quicker. Only problem for me is...I am a PB-aholic! Safer for me NOT to even keep it in the house! LOL
Thanks again,
Chris

This used to be a sensitive topic for me when I was really sick. I detested even the idea of pity but there was no doubt I was craving support.
It's a very tough place to be... When you are hurting so much but you don't want anyone to feel sorry for you. You want to be brave and suck it up - but you so much need for someone to understand...not for pity...just so you don't feel so disconnected and isolated from the world than you already are because of the chronic illness...

I give the yolks to my puppies--and my their coats are shiny now!! Who knew that BFL was good for our pets too. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by NaturalPhysiques (145 posts) at 12:44 AM
I eat the whole egg. Love the healthy fats. You often hear people promoting how high quality egg protein is, but throwing out the yolk actually diminishes the protein value! I like the suggestions a few people had, of having one yolk and then several whites. That's a great compromise for calories.

Take one day at a time and do what you can..LIFE will happen but don't let it control your life... Everything little thing you do will count and eventually add up.. when I was really sick, "bad" I couldn't work out but I kept bars and RTDs by my bed,, no excuse not to eat right and I lost 1 lb... with no exercise so I counted that as an success! EVERY LITTLE THING COUNTS!

Hi gang!
I was reviewing my goals today for BFL...
"Ok, Jim, we want to get down to about 170lbs...be in the best athletic shape possible...get into top condition so that you can compete in time-trial bike races and do a 100-mile ride...be as healthy as possible so that your hormonal illness is manageable...cure your sleep apnea...be able to return to work... There you go!!! Those are great and inspiring goals that you are well on your way to achieving! Can you imagine how it's going to feel to have dropped 160 lbs in less than a year?!! Wow! Isn't that exciting Jim?!!!"
I thought for a minute and with a big grin said out loud "You Betcha!!! (OK, I know what you're thinking - there goes Jim talking to himself again!!!). Make no mistake, achieving my BFL goals is changing my life! But lately I've been feeling a strong desire to achieve far more as a result of this fascinating journey I embarked upon mere months ago... As excited and motivated as I am about what kind of body I'm building, I'm even more excited about the kind of person I will become as a result...
I want to be the person that can inspire others with hormonal disorders or other chronic illness to get their hope back and be willing to give it just one more try...
I want to be able to feel that I have honored God not only in how I live my life, but also that I have made the most of the body He gave me and that He is pleased...
I want to be an example that it is never too late to rebuild your body and your life...
I want to live with passion and excitement - not fear and regret...
I want people to see me as a shining example that treating others with kindness and respect is not the mark of a weak man, but instead a rare trait that only the most courageous possess...
I want people to respect me for my hard-earned yet humble wisdom and to know that such wisdom can not be attained, but rather is a gift from God...
I want my friends and family to truly feel the love I have for them...and to inspire them to be the best they can be...
I want people to see the Holy Spirit shining from within me so that I may be a bright light in a dark world...
And more than anything else, I want to finally be able to feel that I've become the man God intended me to be from the day I was born...That the deep wounds of childhood...the loneliness...the chronic illness...being over 300lbs ...and all of the other adversities of my life - that they all were part of what He used to mold me into the kind of man He wanted me to be...
I guess I should consider these big-picture goals for my life rather than something BFL-related, but I don't think I would ever have even thought of these goals if I hadn't experienced the transformation that is taking place because of BFL...As such, these goals have added far more importance and value to my BFL program than those already exciting goals that I established back in January prior to embarking on such a life-changing journey...
Do you also have goals that are so much bigger than the usual lose weight/build muscle goals? I think sharing those big-picture goals would not only inspire other BFLers, but you as well...
Jim
Body for Life Forum Message by chris p (31 posts) at 10:46 AM
Wow Jim! That’s a hefty set of goals. Good for you and I have no doubt that you’ll reach each and every one of them in time.
My goals are much simpler. I want to get in shape and stay there. I want to be healthy in my golden years so I’m not a burden on my kids. My Dad has exercised his whole life and is so easy to be with. My Mom is sedentary and as a result is difficult to travel with. I love her dearly but I want to be like my Dad. Here is my answer to one of the questions in the book:
What are the pros and cons of continuing in the direction I’m going?
The pro’s of continuing in this direction is that it’s easy and doesn’t require any time
or effort.
The cons are that it doesn’t feel good and the results are nil. I will continue getting nothing out of life because I’m putting nothing into life. My kids will be gone and I’ll be fat and lumpy and sooner or later, I’ll become old and ill.
It seems so sad and pathetic to me.
Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1031 posts) at 10:53 AM
Thanks Chris! I know my post was a bit long-winded but I'm just so hopeful and excited about how BFL is making me feel about my life - not just my body!!!
I admire your commitment to your kids. The actions you are taking now will also help them to take better of themselves as a result of your example...
However, I look at BFL as the somewhat easy way to live compared to the tremendous effort it takes to cope with the consequences of letting your body go (see my thread "You think BFL is tough?" for my perspective on that)
Good luck with your BFL program!
Jim
Body for Life Forum Message by chris p (31 posts) at 12:43 PM
Jim, I wouldn’t say you’re post was long winded… more like passionate. I like that.
I want to be a good fitness role model for my kids. When asked who my role models were, my Dad came to mind and I never realized it before. I wrote him a letter telling him.
You’re right BFL is so much easier to do when you have the mindset of the what the alternative is.
Great post by the way.
Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1031 posts) at 02:56 AM
Hi gang! In recent weeks, I have received questions about what the symptoms are of this condition since I have this...
My condition went undiagnosed for at least 5 years until it was almost life-threatening. It is misdiagnosed so often I feel compelled to help others who might have adrenal insufficiency/exhaustion and haven't been diagnosed...
Cortisol is the most abundant hormone in the body. It is secreted by the adrenal glands as directed by the pituitary gland. Cortisol fights inflammation in the body and is the key hormone secreted to fight infection. It also helps your body to deal with the effects of stress. Low cortisol can occur because of strain or damage to the adrenal glands (primary) or damage to the pituitary gland (secondary). The most common symptom is usually profound fatigue - adrenal exhaustion.I wanted to include a few other key signs and symptoms to give you an idea if you should get checked...
- Continuing fatigue not relieved by sleep
- Cravings for salt or salty foods
- Exhaustion and/or lethargy - everything seems harder and you have lost your 'spark'.
- Light-headedness or dizzines when standing up
- Low blood pressure or at least lower than seems reasonable for your weight and physical condition
- Decreased ability to handle stress - you find that you are much more irritable than you used to be
- Sudden increase in asthma and or allergy problems
- Frequent and persistent colds and sinus infections that take a long time to heal
- You feel crappy in the morning but get a second wind in the evening and feel your best at night
- Sleep problems such as insomnia
- Noticeable decrease in your normal enthusiasm for life
- Frequent rashes or other skin conditions
- Unexplained weight loss (for me, I gained weight instead!)
Please understand that some of these symptoms are also common to other conditions. But if a lot of these ring a bell, you might want to consult an endocrinologist.
For me, the first sign was muscles hurting and fatigue after a bike ride. Then my asthma and allergies suddenly got much worse. Then skin rashes started appearing along with out-of-control athlete's foot. Then I seemed to have a cold or sinus infection almost constantly - about 15 times a year. Subsequent weight gain as well as increased inflammation throughout my body caused sleep apnea to develop. Eventually, I lost almost all of my physical and emotional energy. It was 6 years before the proper diagnosis of pituitary failure was made and treatment was started. Although, for my condition (pituitary failure) I also needed thyroxine, testosterone and growth hormone in addition to the cortisol (Cortef).
A key reason my diagnosis took so long is that it was cyclical. I would work out (bike riding) for say a week, then get exhausted and feel like I had a virus or bug - rest a few days and then feel OK again. This scenario was repeated almost 30 times between 1996 and 2001...
What I know now was that I had low cortisol and the exercise would tax my cortisol reserves until I slid into adrenal exhaustion (which mimics a cold or virus). A few days rest however, would allow the reserves to be slightly restored to a high enough level to bring me out of adrenal exhaustion. Then I would restart my exercise program a couple of weeks later and repeat the cycle. Man! That was frustrating!!!
I don't want anyone else to get stuck on such a long road.
Please feel free to ask any questions in this thread or PM me. Just keep in mind that I'm not a doctor, but I've helped quite a few people over the years get diagnosed after years of having it overlooked by their doctor.
Jim

So far it looks like at least a couple BFLers probably have this condition. It's amazing how similar our journeys have been. Too bad that this condition is often missed or misdiagnosed as depression, aging, etc...

Body for Life Forum Message by Coco (313 posts) at 11:06 PM
jim, how did you go about finding an endocrinologist? i was planning on going to my general practice doctor, but i've become disappointed in her recently and think it's time to move on.
Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1031 posts) at 11:33 PM
Hi Coco - Burning or at least hurting muscles and asthma problems were some of the first symptoms I went through because of low cortisol. Remember this kind of thing is cyclical depending on the stress placed upon you and your cortisol reserves.
There is a website About.com that has a Thyroid forum whch has a list of 'Top Docs' that are referred by forum members. Check it out but whatever you do, see an endocrinologist and not a GP doctor!
Let me know how it goes...

Hi all,
So I've been busting my tail and have ramped up my workouts considerably getting started n my training for the triathlon in August. I'm thinking about scrapping c2 and starting over this week so that c2 ends with my triathlon and just before surf camp - that'll allow me to take a couple of weeks off for surf camp. Whaddaya think? Should I scrap c2 and start over so that my schedule meets up nicely? (It will leave me tan and buff and in incredible shape by camp, so it's cool either way).
On another note - I'm excited, I ran on a treadmill for the first time yesterday - I'm actually running about a 10 minute mile! (I had estimated being able to start at around 14-15 minutes/mile). Wahoo :) I've decided after my tri, I'm gonna do a 1/2 marathon in October (I know I'll walk some, but it will be fun). I can't believe that in January I was out of breath going up a flight of stairs!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by Hoping for a lot (190 posts) at 07:51 AM
I don't know if I would start over. Why don't you just continue and extend you're C2 a little. It would be the same as starting over, but you wouldn't have to lose what you've done so far in this challenge.

WOW youre doing so great!!You truly are a whole new person!!!!!!!I think you should just exend challenge 2 or split it into 2 mini-challenges, that way you won't scrap any progress and it'd be fun to do shorter ones for a change!Good luck , you r doing awesomely.

I vote for staying with C2! I think it'll give you a boost of confidence (although it doesn't look like you're hurting for confidence!) and let you focus more on your endurance training.
Way to go on your progress!!!

I wouldnt consider stopping. Challenge 1 is the foundation for life. You should continue the program for life.
However after challenge 1 you should do 3 different exercises 3 sets for every muscle group at different angles. Go to failure on the last set of the different muscle groups per body part.
you are hot!!!!

Okay....so, when I go to the gym today, I'm gonna use the Smith machine for the first time! Yippee! You know, a few years ago, a personal trainer put me on one, and I had a hard time doing a squat with no weight on the bar!!! I tried it out the other day, and it already had 20 lbs. on it and I could do it, no problem! Yippee! I oughta be hurtin' tomorrow--in a good way, of course! :)

I love the Smith machine for LBWO, and for bench press when I work out alone. Adds a huge safety factor to squats when you are really pushing it!

Everyone here has obstacles to overcome, but when someone has a medical issue that is keeping them from losing weight and they can overcome that with BFL that means this program is truly a miracle. Keep up the good work.

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1031 posts) at 12:56 PM
Thanks ShineyHiney and everyone else...
I really appreciate the friends I have here. I wouldn't have made nearly as much progress without you guys...
Coping with hormonal illness has been a long and trying journey, however I think it is easier for me to be more motivated than many people as a result. It does complicate losing weight but I think I'm getting it figured out.
The main issue is that my hormones go out of balance every time I lose about 20 lbs so that puts me into a minor tailspin... Once I get to my goal weight of 170lbs, I'll be able to stay on the same dosages and everything should stabilize - that's a big motivator!
BTW -- I started BFL in January but have lost a total of 110 lbs since last November when I topped out at 330lbs. I still have another 50 to go but you know what they say..."The first 100lbs is always the hardest!" (Yuk! Yuk!)
And yes lack of support from friends has been like rubbing salt in the wound... They just didn't get it... I tried to just suck it up because the last thing I wanted was sympathy, but there was no denying that I very much needed their support... I still enjoyed their company but usually felt separate and isolated around them... but now I've got you guys!!!
I hope that I can play a part in encouraging others, especially those who have thyroid or other hormonal disorders and have all but given up on ever losing the weight...
I'm tellin ya! I'm lucky to have so many powerful motivators to help me stay focused!
Thanks again...
Jim

Here is some motivation. I was filling up my iPod with some new music a lot of old 80's rock LOL I have been missing it a little LOL (Pssst. pass me the keys to my Trans Am) ... hehehe Anyway I found put this song on and it fits my mood and it is so motivating! Maybe the words will get you going too ;-)
Right Now.
by Van Halen
Don’t wanna wait til tomorrow,
Why put it off another day?
One more walk through problems,
Built up, and stand in our way ,ah
One step ahead, one step behind me
Now you gotta run to get even
Make future plans, don’t dream about yesterday, hey
C’mon turn, turn this thing around
Right now, hey
It’s your tomorrow
Right now,
C’mon,it’s everything
Right now,
Catch a magic moment, do it
Right here and now
It means everything
Miss the beat, you lose the rhythm,
And nothing falls into place, no
Only missed by a fraction,
Slipped a little off your pace, oh,
The more things you get, the more you want,
Just trade in one for the other,
Workin so hard, to make it easier, whoa,
Got to turn, c’mon turn this thing around
Right now,
Catch that magic moment, do it
Right here and now
It means everything
It’s enlightened me, right now
What are you waitin for
Oh,Tell me, what are you waiting for
Turn this thing around

Here's my contribution! The other day was totally groving to this on the radio and thought I HAVE to download this from itunes:
Tom Petty:
Well I won’t back down, no I won’t back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won’t back down
Gonna stand my ground, won’t be turned around
And I’ll keep this world from draggin’ me down
Gonna stand my ground and I won’t back down
Hey baby, there ain’t no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
And I won’t back down.
Well I know what’s right, I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin’ me around
But I’ll stand my ground and I won’t back down
Hey baby there ain’t no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
And I won’t back down
No, I won’t back down

Oh yeah, and this song called "No Easy Way Out" - by Survivor
We're not indestructible,
Baby better get that straight.
I think it's unbelieveable,
How you give into the hands of fate.
Some things are worth fighting for,
some feelings never die.
I'm not asking for another chance,
I just wanna know why.
(chorus)
There's no easy way out,
There's no shortcut home.
There's no easy way out,
Giving in can't be wrong.
I don't wanna pacify you,
I don't wanna drag you down.
But I'm Feeling like a prisoner,
Like A Stranger in a no-name town.
I See all the angry faces,
Afraid that could be you and me.
Talking about what might have been,
Thinking about what it used to be.
(chorus)
There's no easy way out,
There's no shortcut home.
There's no easy way out,
Giving in can't be wrong.
Baby Baby we can shed this skin,
We can know how we feel inside.
Instead of going down an endless road,
Not knowing if we're dead or alive.
Some things are worth fighting for,
some feelings never die.
I'm not asking for another chance,
I just wanna know why.
(chorus)
There's no easy way out,
There's no shortcut home.
There's no easy way out,
givin in, givin in, can't be wrong.
(repeat and fade)
Its mostly the Chorus that gets me going!! Its got an awesome driving beat! What can I say, I'm a product of the 80's!!!

To keep on track with the 80s theme...This is one of my motivation songs...Remember Bon Jovi
This ain't a song for the broken-hearted
No silent prayer for the faith-departed
I ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd
You're gonna hear my voice
When I shout it out loud
It's my life
It's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just wanna live while I'm alive
It's my life
This is for the ones who stood their ground
For Tommy and Gina who never backed down
Tomorrow's getting harder make no mistake
Luck ain't even lucky
Got to make your own breaks
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2993 posts) at 02:20 PM
Here's my contribution, albeit not from the 80s, LOL! It's Tim Mcgraw's "How Bad Do You Want It?"
Are you hungry?
Are you thirsty?
Is it a fire that burns you up inside?
How bad do you want it?
How bad do you need it?
Are you eating, sleeping, dreaming
With that one thing on your mind?
How bad do you want it?
How bad do you need it?
Cause if you want it all
You've got to lay it all out on the line
...
Can you feel it?
Can you taste it?
Can you hear it knocking at your door?
How bad do you want it?
How bad do you need it?
Are you eating, sleeping, dreaming
With that one thing on your mind?
How bad do you want it?
How bad do you need it?
Cause if you want it all
You've got to lay it all out on the line
There's always a price you pay no matter what you do
If you're gonna climb that mountain to the top
It always comes down to
How bad do you want it?
How bad do you need it?
Are you eating, sleeping, dreaming
With that one thing on your mind?
How bad do you want it?
How bad do you need it?
Cause if you want it all
You've got to lay it all out on the line

My favorite motivational song, that I play every single time I feel like quitting is by Daniel Bedingfield "I gotta get through this":
If only I could get through this
I just gotta get through this
I just gotta get through this
If only I could get through this
I just gotta get through this
I just gotta get through this
I gotta get through this
I gotta get through this
I gotta make, gotta make it, gotta make it through
said, I'm gunna get through this
I'm gunna get through this
I gotta take, gotta take my mind off of you
Give me just a second and I'll be alright
Surely one more moment couldn't break my heart
Give me 'til tomorrow then I'll be okay
Just another day and then I'll hold you tight
It's great! Has a fast beat and keeps me going! I hope you like it.

Ok ladies, did most of you have the time to try the exercise that I put on the site on Monday? I have and my buns are sore! HURT SO GOOD! Just trying to get some feedback... it is good to change your workout up whether it is by raising the weights, changing the order of your exercises or changing the exercises! All of it will confuse "shock" your muscles/body into making those changes and grow! So never stay with the same routine or weights too long! I suggest doing something different with each workout.... good luck ladies!

Since you are just using your bodyweight, there are several ways to shake it up, but don't over do it,ok.. for instance if this is your week to work the lower body twice, don't do that exercise again, try something different and/or maybe 5-10 minutes warm-up on treadmill or elliptical to loosen upt he muscles.... Listen to your body! :)- But I am glad it HURTS! lol

Decided to go to my Chiro's gym... pretty HARDCORE place...not gonna run into any little old ladies hogging all the benches there like at the rec center!!!
the owner is really cool & one of those contagiously enthusiatic people... ( hmm not unlike someone we know eh girl!! ;) anywho.. he let me try things out just to see if I like it there... they have some NEAT machines that isolate muscle groups .. & LOTS of free wts & ..*sigh* stacks of 45lb plates!! (YA-- I know I'm a weirdo!!) Also he is more than willing to help work on whatever program you want.. help you plan, diet anything.. even just spot you if you're on your own! __ the clincher was they have artists paintings of famous bodybuilders up on the wall ...& there was MONICA BRANT bigger than life!! gotta say the man has taste!
SOOO .. I may just end up a member - I think you'd LOVE the place! :)

I also miss her. I've been kind of laying low the last little while too, hmmmm, I wonder if it just doesn't feel the same without her funny stuff.
I found her extremely funny, whitty, intelligent and she is probably the biggest loss I have seen in my "tracker time". She came across to me as very cool - someone I'd like to know, someone you'd like as a friend (this is how she seemed to me). As knox said, even her reasons were cool.
If anyone can get her to return, it'd really be nice. C'mon Karenna, give us 5 minutes of your time, huh, huh.

Last night I had a dream about my wedding (ok a nightmare) but anywho, it was in third party perspective so I was looking at myself. It was this morning when I woke up that I realized that EVERYTIME I dream about myself, I'm thin! Does this happen to anyone? I have not been considered "normal" for many years, in fact, I was labeled as Obese when I was 19 (I'll be 30 tomorrow) Now that I think back all those years, in EVERYSINGLE DREAM I HAVE, I'm thin! Not skinny, but buff, muscular - even before BFL! Maybe this is God's way of telling me that BFL is the right direction. Maybe this is why I've been so unhappy for so long. I have always known that my personality does not match my body shape. I'm hyper, energetic, and goofy - not the general charateristics in a fat chick. So here is my question.... Does anyone else "look" different in their dreams? I don't mean your wishes kind of dreams, I mean the kind of dream when you go to sleep and you dream you've just walked into work buck naked kind of dream.? I'm just curious if its only me? I really do think its encouragement from God.

No response necessary- just know if I dont get this out, I'll cry about it all day-
As some of you may remember, I hurt my back ( reinjury from a broken back) in week 9- upset, but decided to keep eating clean and baby my back so I would be better to go to Ireland this month. So I did just that.....and as of about 3 days ago I was back to normal--so this morning I decided to start my cardio again...and I did it up- worked hard, felt great etc....when I got off the treadmill, I sat down to take my tennies off, and, as happens with a lot of us, I felt like I was going to puke--then I started coughing, THEN I realized I had to pee ( and anyone whos had 3 kids knows....coughing and having to pee are NOT compatible)but Im thinking "I just need to get this other shoe off and then I'll go, so, when the next coughing fit hits, I tighten up and brace myself against an uh...."accident" and TWEAK! I cough real big, and it simultaneously feels like I pulled a groin muscle and got an instant appendicitis attack. I got up and went and laid down and in the span of 10 minutes, my back was so pinched I couldnt even get off the bed without DH helping---here I am at work, 13 days from going to Ireland, and Im bent over like my 98 year old granny used to be....the pain is bad but the anger is whats making me want to scream!!
bleh....end rant....

So yesterday was my first 100% eating clean day. Can you believe it? That is HUGE HUGE accomplishment for me. I'm so proud. And I felt FANTASTIC ALL DAY!!!!!
However, today, I'm super hungry. And there is coffee and yummy danishes tempting me big time. So far, I've remained clean. But am wondering if this is something anyone else has experienced? Do I just have to suffer through this for a few days and then I'll be ok? I am DETERMINED to maintain clean eating because I KNOW one cup of coffee with cream and sugar will derail me. I've got veggies to munch on and an apple for my sweet tooth. And i had oatmeal with cottage cheese for breakfast. And a protein shake which usually helps my sweet tooth.
Am wondering if anyone has any good carb choices...like rye krisps. Something low in calories and fat and carbs but still crunchy/fiber good for you.

Rice cakes! no fat! yay!

Congrats ORQT! It was hard for me at first, I am in week 4. However, yesterday I ate clean and drank a gallon of water. Let me tell you, drinking a whole gallon really curbed my appetite. I couldn't think of anything but tinklin.
I always tell myself, "Kathy, you can make it another hour, it's just an hour, and you are definitely not going to starve!" That usually helps me with a swift kick in the pants. Sometimes, though, I am just hungry.
Also, there are cappucino flavored shakes...maybe that will help for the next time?
Body for Life Forum Message by CJ (38 posts) at 01:43 PM
First - how about a pocket-size copy of your before picture with your goals and positive encouragements written on the back. Meditating on that for a couple minutes can really strengthen your willpower!!!
Also, I have found that as long as I am getting enough protein, and always eating protein and carbs together I don't get hungry until right around when another one of the 6 meal-times hits.
I know I greatly under-estimated how much protein I was consuming my first few weeks. Try punching everything you eat into fitday.com and see if you're getting your 40% protein.
Also I have found eating slower helps alot. Good Luck girl and we all KNOW you can do it. :o)
Body for Life Forum Message by Rie (405 posts) at 01:48 PM
Don't do rice cakes- they are loaded with sodium, and if you eat the no salt ones, you might as well be eating cardboard--low fat ( and even low carb) tortillas work because you can put a little spray butter on them and micro for about 4 minutes...comes out like a cracker.

Do you have Weetbix in America? (I think they might be Australian.) They are 97% whole grain wheat cereal bars that are actually really good. Now that I'm eating less sugar, they even taste sweet to me. 2 weetbix bars= 106 cal;0.4 g fat; 3.6 g protein; 3.3 g fibre; 20 g carbs. Anyway, if I have to HAVE TO eat something extra to fill me up or find a quick carb to go with a protein, these are my ol' standby.

I'm really getting scared and kind of panicked. I had to lay off of BFL for a few weeks because college got too hairy. I didn't pig out or anything but I did miss a lot of workouts and was a little "flexible" with my eating. I have not gained anything back (I always seem to fluxuate between 248-253 and lately I've been holding strong at 252. No changes in measurements or anything but here is my freakout. My wedding is in 4 months. I'm so so SO SO SO SO terrified that my double chin will still be here. I know everyone always tells me to ignore my grandmother and her comments but how can I? I have to talk to her almost DAILY to get this wedding crap done and EVERYTIME I talk to her she asks me if I've lost any weight from the last time we'd talked.- even if it was only the day before. She is putting me in a panic and I tell her all the time how much this hurts me and bothers me but she never stops. I don't want to be fat in my wedding pictures. I know I won't be thin yet but I don't want to be obese in them. I will be able to pick up hard core BFL again on Monday the 6th, I look pretty much the same as I did in my last photos. Do you guys think I will be able to ditch the double chin by the wedding? I'm wearing a size 20 now (not in everything, I can wear all 20's at Target and Ross but NOTHING at fred meyer or Old Navy) so I guess that means I'm really a 22 even though some of my 22's fall off if I'm not wearing a belt. Do you guys think its possible to be in a size 16 by the wedding? I was shooting for a 14 originally but because I had to stop BFL for a few weeks, I'm all screwed up. I think I'm just going to start a new challenge on Monday and put this terrible one in my past - it was almost over anyway. I need some input and some encouragement. My friggin fiancee tells me I'm not fat and that I'm beautiful and it pisses me off becuase he can't POSSIBLY be telling the truth. I weight more that HIM for God's sake! Help
Body for Life Forum Message by Rie (405 posts) at 01:57 PM
hello...the "friggin" fiance met you heavy and asked you to marry him---what do you want, a lie detector test?....When you love someone you just do- and you dont see the things we see in ourselves...you are expending time and energy on something you cant do anything about! Tell Gran if she asks again, you're going to hang up- and then do it. Get BACK on BFL ( schools over now right? Im a teacher and it is for us) and you still have at least one more full challenge you can go before the wedding....of course you can do it- you're not that far away....
Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change
the courage to change the things I can

I would say calmly hang up on her if it happens again. Maybe she'll realize what she's doing to you. Of course, you already know what to do and you've been doing a GREAT job doing it. Everybody has a few setbacks. Start over if you have to. Or do a four-week mini challenge. Whatever it takes to get started again. Please don't give up!!
Body for Life Forum Message by FinallyReady (42 posts) at 02:22 PM
I know this may be difficult to hear, but the wedding is only a microscopic part of marriage. I've been married twice. For my first wedding (age 30) I lost weight, looked wonderful, and had an amazing, expensive ceremony. It was everything I'd ever wanted and I looked great in the pictures. However, the marriage fell apart within a few short months and the heartache afterwards completely overshadowed the lovely wedding. Afterwards it seemed ludicrous that I had put so much emphasis on my appearance and the wedding. Not that you are being ludicrous, Monica, because I think women are socialized to look "perfect" for their weddings and there's a ton of pressure to do so.
For my second marriage (8 years later), I wasn't at my ideal weight, and my then-fiance and I spent only a minimal amount of money on our clothing and ceremony. However, we have invested much more in our relationship and we are still going strong nearly 7 years later.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that your appearance isn't as important to the marriage as your emotional well-being. Doing BFL will get you closer to your physical goals but even more importantly, it will make you a psychologically healthier person...that is the best gift you can give your fiance and yourself.

Well first of all you marriage is not based on your weight it is based on the fact that you love each other. Secondly if you want to be a size 14-16 by your wedding that is entirely possible. Honey you need to take a deep breath and concentrate on one day at a time. You are doing great and the fact that you took some time off and didnt gain 20 lbs or so is a really good sign. We are all here to support you and the next time your "friggin fiance" tells you your not fat listen to him. He is looking at whats on the inside because he loves you. Hugs and best wishes Dawn

I have read of women losing multiple sizes during a challege. However, why focus on a size in particular? Size can't be true if you wear an 18 from some stores, and not from others.
Hit it hard core, tell mams you're working on it, and be happy with what you achieve, whatever it is. You have come a long way already and should be so proud of yourself.
If October comes, and you aren't happy with yourself, you will not remember it as a happy time. Start celebrating your progress. You can do this, you've already proven that!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by njleydon (133 posts) at 03:17 PM
Wish you wouldn't stress yourself out so much over the weight thing. There is enough stress involved in school and a wedding, etc. to concentrate on. Yes it would be nice to get down to whatever you want to be as soon as possible but you have to think of what is really important here. YOU ARE GETTING MARRIED!!! BFL will always be there, we will always be there. Slow down, take a breath and rejoice in the fact that you are marrying the man that loves you JUST THE WAY YOU ARE.
Big Hugs!!
Yours in health,
Nancy Jane

Monica,
I'm not telling you this to freak you out, but wedding dresses are sized all weird anyway. I weighed 120lbs on my wedding day and I think my dress was a size 14 or even a 16, I have broad shoulders and that's what they ordered for me. So, I agree with Kathcandu, try not to focus on a particular size because they are all different.
Looking back on my wedding (13 years ago), I stressed about things that really don't matter now. In fact, I often wished we had eloped.
Good luck to you, I know you can get over this hump and we're here with you all the way.
Body for Life Forum Message by BabeBy40 (320 posts) at 06:24 PM
Monica: First {{Hug}}. Second, take a deep breath. Third, you are going to be a beautiful bride no matter how much you weigh -- there is something about pictures containing two people in love starting their lives together and absorbed in the moment and each other, that transcends pop culture's definition of thin and beautiful.
Keep focused on the real goal here: Good health and healthy habits. You should be doing BFL FOR LIFE, not just so you can be XX size when you are married. Am I wrong in thinking that you never want to go back to the way you were pre-BFL? Just stay strong, do the best you can, and try to enjoy the wedding.
My size 14 wedding dress is sitting in my closet right now. Every now and then, I put it over my size 8 body and think -- I hope this thing NEVER fits again! Am I a little disappointed that I was big when I was married? Yep. Am I glad that I am much healthier now? You bet!
My goal for my 5th anniversary is to go on a cruise, get a new dress that fits, and renew my vows. That way I get to look the way I dreamed I would at my wedding without the stress it would have cause the first time around!
Stay strong!
Lisa

My heart goes out to you!! Those who have posted before me have great advice! It sounds like you have a wonderful man to marry and that is what you need to keep your focus on. Just work towards being as healthy as possible for your wedding day.
As far as granny is concerned, you need to have a heart to heart with her. Tell her that you love her, but she needs to stop asking about your weight. Tell her it is putting more stress on you. And honestly, more stress means more cortisol in your system and often leads to weight gain. Tell her you need to destress so you can concentrate on your planning and your health. You will be whatever size you will be on your wedding day. What is important is that you feel as good as possible and you are with the person you love. That should be the focus - not your double chin.
You will get to your goal, Monica. It may not be exactly by your wedding date...this is for life. Stay strong, stay positive and don't let others stress you out so much. Stand up for yourself and take control. This is YOUR wedding, this is YOUR body. They must respect that!!!

I went to Walgreens on my way to the gym today and picked up one of the Omron Fat Loss Monitors. It was $49.99. I followed the suggestions on skwiggs site when I used it (after my workout). I had mentally prepared myself for an acceptable bodyfat% range of 12%-14%. Luckily for me...it came in at 12.7%!!! Whewww! Not as great as I wanted, but better than I expected. I'm new to the whole monitoring-my-bodyfat idea. But I am shooting for 10% bodyfat by the end of challenge 2. Anyone know at what percentage your abs start to show? Even better, what about the whole six-pack? My guess is a six-pack requires single digit bodyfat. Probably around 8%.

I am not a part of this in any way, but since you guys seem to all be pretty seasoned runners, could you advise me as to the reality or likelihood of going from being able to do walk/jog intervals of 3 min/2 min for a total of 20 minutes (4 intervals) to being able to jog/run a mile? how long does something like that take? I feel sooo out of shape but am dying to be able to run..I know there is a couch to 5k program on the coolrunnings website but even that seems like it might not be possible for someone like me..any advice?
Body for Life Forum Message by Chris (315 posts) at 04:44 PM
CHRISTREIGNS77
I was a runner in high school, that was 17 years ago. I have not really run much since then. 11 weeks ago I started BFL and have not looked back. I could not run 2 miles in 20 minutes 11 weeks ago and before this cardio competition I though I was kicking butt at 2.50 miles in 20 minutes.
AS FOR ADVISE!! Find out what your ten is right now and work from there. Do the HIIT as instructed in the BFL book. 1 minute intervals increasing to 9 from 6,(3 times) then your final increase from 6 to 10 then cool down. You may start off walking and your 10 may be a slow jog but that is were you start. In time your speed and endurance will increase and you will be running 10 minute miles.
Its all about giving it your all, I have seen people do a cardio program and they do not give it their all ( hit your 10's). If you really want to burn the fat and increase your running strength go all out each time.
It has been determined by the cardio freaks that puking = 10. I have not puked yet so I guess I have not hit my 10's yet. Good luck. You can do it if you put your mind and body to it.
Body for Life Forum Message by ctc (2 posts) at 04:46 PM
Holy crap! 3.2 MILES in 20 mintues during you HIIT workout??? Are you running at an incline? I'm currently only hitting 2.28 miles, but I'm running at a 4.0 degree incline - AND I'm definitely NOT built for running. How do you guys do it?
Body for Life Forum Message by Rod has changed his Bod (350 posts) at 04:59 PM
When I go over 3 miles during my hiit I am only at a 1 incline.
I too, like Chris, thought I was hitting my 10's at 2.5 miles for 20 mins. Then I joined this cardio competition and decided to really go all out and push the envelope. Guess what happened I eventually got over 3 miles and I am still alive!!!!!
So now I have come to the conclusion if you look deep down inside of yourself there is truly more to give.
You just have to do like the Nike commercial says and JUST DO IT.
I can honestly say I have graduated from HIIT to SHIIT
super high intensity interval training.
What do you guys think? do you think I could get Bill to add SHIIT to his next book?
Join our little Cardio competition. I guarantee you will push yourself to new height striving for 3 miles in 20 mins.
Rod
Body for Life Forum Message by Chris (315 posts) at 05:14 PM
I currently am running without an incline, but I did max out the treadmill speed at 12mph, it was sweet.
Thanks to Rod we are SHIITing instead of HIITing. I think Rod should contact Bill and have this SHIIT put in his next book.
For some reason I am more pumped than ever to SHIIT in the morning.

Oh man. I read this thread, and I feel like going for a big ol' cardio shiit tomorrow! But I know that I have LBWO, so I will have to settle for a weight training shiit instead!
I also do not run on an incline. I concentrate on getting my top speeds, though! When I hit 12 mph (which I never dreamed of hitting until Chris came into my life-ha!), I feel like I am very close to the puke zone. It's AWESOME!
CHRISTREIGNS77, I was never a runner until recently. I was fat and inactive in high school and the first part of college. I have made AMAZING improvements with the 20 Minute Aerobic Solution as prescribed in BFL book. If you're on this cardio competition thread for long, you'll see that people are making phenomenonal improvements even within a few weeks! I think you'll be able to jog/run sooner than you think if you stick with this shiitty BFL aerobic method!
And yes, Rod, I think you should have the "SHIIT" copyrighted immidiately, so that when Bill uses it (which he surely will!), you will get a chunk of the profits from his next book! YEAH! Anyway, can't wait to hear more results tomorrow...

Well, during my 15-mile bike ride today, I pegged my heart rate at 170 bpm for 6 minutes straight while climbing a tough hill.
Pretty intense for a 50-yr old!!!

Hi guys! I've been kind of laying low for the past few weeks (on the tracker that is - I've still been busting my butt!)
I can't believe your almost to 3.25! That is so awesome!
I actually ran outside twice last week and after being on the treadmill for so long it was a most painful experience (the next morning). It was nice to change things up a little! I'm anxious to get back on the treadmill though and see what I can crank out!
Keep up the awesome progress!

Over the past year and a half I have had health issues. Feb 2003 I had a seizure (they can't figure out why)and ended up in the hospital with borderline multi-organ failure( CK level was at 650). I now take heavy doses of meds. The meds have all kinds of wonderful side effects.
My total cholesterol shot up to 284 (should be below 200) with triglycerides over 700. If you are not sure what this means trust me when I tell you that this is very high. My good cholesterol was 24 (should be 60+). I was even taking a STATIN drug to bring down the cholesterol (lipitor). I have been told several times that if this did not change I would be dead by 40. I just turned 32 last Tuesday.
I am happy to report that after 4 weeks on the BFL program My cholesterol is down to 188 with my tri's down to 174. This is unreal. I still have to take lipitor but I hope to be off it soon. If all goes well over the next 8 weeks my doctor feels I can go offr the other meds I have been taking.
This is all a welcome "side effect" of the BFL program.

Awesome dude, I don't think BFL has any bad side effects. I have noticed that my joints don't hurt in the morning when I get up. BFL not only makes you look better, it makes your feel better and makes your body healthier. Keep up the hard work and you will be off the meds in no time.
Body for Life Forum Message by Thisisit! AKA BubbleButt (112 posts) at 04:03 PM
Congratulations Slacker. I know personally how frustrating/ scary/consuming health issues can be. To be able to have such an impact with the BFL program is fantastic and really exciting... I am hoping for similar impact (although my issues are certainly not life threatening!!).

Great news Slacker!
As Nancy mentioned earlier- blood pressure and cholesteral were concerns of mine, although I was never placed on meds for either.
In Canada, they don't seem to report the figures in the same manner, so I can't really relate, but that does not matter.
ALL GOOD!!!

To Everybody....one story these pictures will never tell you is that everybody was very down to earth, warm and open. It seemed like we had all known each other for years when we were actually strangers. There were people on the cruise just starting their Challenge that were welcomed and treated like Champions. They were apprehensive because they thought, "I'm not in shape, I won't be accepted." It was just the opposite...Everyone was fantastic and it was like a huge homecoming or family reunion that excluded all the dysfunctional cousins ;) You have to be there next year!

Thanks everyone! I don't think I am going to start a C2 - I am just going to keep living it.
The most important change has been the sense of accomplishment I have gotten. I started the program when I quit to be a SAHM and was a little down. I have structure now, and something to be proud of myself for.
I know I am not the most dramatic transformation, I did not lose the most weight, and truthfully I have not given it a '10' every day. But I am satisfied and happy and confident that this is a lifestyle for me, not a race to the 12 weeks.
Thanks again for the kind words
Tricia

What do you do? If you have anything else to eat after your last meal what is it?. Man I have been getting hit hard after my last meal wanting something sweet to eat(old habit me and hubby formed after being married) I usually find myself eating sf/ff pudding or a granola bar(bad I know) but not sure how to combat the habit and if so what to eat.

A green apple and few spoons of cottage cheese. (Hussman recommends this actually since both are slow-release and get you through the night.)
I was eating the protein pudding from the EFL book, but then I read that whey protein before bed is a bad plan.
On a really bad craving night, I stand at the counter with a jar of peanut butter and a BIG spoon.
Body for Life Forum Message by Slacker in Hawaii (35 posts) at 07:50 PM

This was/is my biggest problem. I found a sugar free, fat free caramel at Wal-mart caled "Nips". Two of them last a really long time, and are only 50 calories. They've really helped me get to bed without caving in.

Crap! So I had a meeting last night at Au Bon Pain (do you have those? A bakery/pastery/coffee shop) that ended at 9:00, just as they were closing. The so soo soooo nice girls asked us if we wanted any pastries since they were just going to throw them out (realize these are $2.50 - $3.50 pastries). Soooooooooooooooo I took 4. I started on one before I even left the store!!!! And then it was, I'll only eat 1/2, ok, I'll eat the other 1/2 but I won't eat the filling... oh you know the rest. This morning... repeat story!!!!!!! Fortunately the other two pastrie went w/ hubby. Soooo how do I feel now 12 hours after the gluttony? Honestly in a way I feel like I ate poison -- I am kind of freaked out about how could I sabotage all this week's work like that -- (I've been really really really good up until now). I thought about balancing it by "canceling" my free day, but I think I'll feel too deprived going into next week. Please tell me you've been here... it s**ks.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I think I did worse than you last night! I had Arby's Chicken Fingers, potato cakes AND a Dairy Queen vanilla cone! EEEEEEK!! PLUS, I missed my cardio. It was a crazy day and I wasn't home more than 30 minutes from 7:30 AM until 9:00 PM. But NO EXCUSE! I, too, am thinking I might cancel my free day!
Back on track today, though! At least, so far!
Body for Life Forum Message by Hoping for a lot (190 posts) at 06:44 PM
Don't sweat it. You didn't eat too much. It won't hurt your whole week and I wouldn't cancel your free day. You should take it and enjoy it.

I've got to echo Kristine - this is body for LIFE not 12 weeks. If we get too discouraged about the setbacks we shortchange ourselves. I've been there and have tried to "learn" from it - sometimes I do learn and sometimes it takes a few lessons. :-)
Just remember that this is about progress - would you have even thought twice about it before you started this journey - I know I wouldn't have - heck, I probably would have hid the other two so my hubby wouldn't see them the next day!

Ahh, I can hardly wait!! Only one week until I return to the USA for the summer. Woo hoo!!
Here are all the things I miss about America:
- Americans!
- English speaking waiters that understand what "on the side" means.
- Products with labels you can read.
- Healthy convenience foods.
- Gyms with American trainers who understand fitness and are up to date.
- Sporty clothes for women.
- Low-fat options in restaurants.
- The absence of live chickens on rickshaws and live turtles, frogs, and eels in the supermarkets.
- Fitness magazines.
- Sunless tanning.
- Did I mention Americans?
Okay, so now that I'm returning to the Homeland.... I've got to know about new products to stock up on while I'm there. New food products, bars, shakes, condiments, etc. that are good for BFL. Help me!!! I plan to fill a couple suitcases--enough to get me through another 10 mo. of BFL in China. HELP!

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1031 posts) at 08:33 PM
Just finished my bike ride a little while ago... Unlike my 'easy 8-mile ride' of Tuesday, today's ride called for more intensity and distance. It turned out to be much more intense than I had planned...
My 15-mile route goes 7.5 miles out to Mission Trails Park and 7.5 back. There is a very tough hill at the park - The Mission Gorge Hill - about an 8-9% grade (maybe steeper) a mile or so long. I always skip it by taking the road that winds through the valley...until today.
I had planned to eventually tackle this very intimidating hill at some point in my training, but I still remember how tough it was the last time I climbed it... That was almost 10 years ago and I was at least 40 lbs lighter. But as I approached the base and prepared to go around it by taking the valley road, I started getting a crazy notion to climb that hill TODAY! Of course, I knew better...
"Jim, you shouldn't try it today because you just aren't ready to climb this hill yet...better wait until you've dropped at least another 10-20 lbs. And besides, you are just getting over a respiratory infection and at your current weight this would simply be too brutal... so we'll just wait and take it on another day...
But dang if I didn't start playing mind games with myself...
"Jim, what if you were able to conquer this hill TODAY?!!! Can you imagine how great it would make you feel about your progress?!!! And just think what a huge boost in confidence it would give you!!"
I know myself well enough to know that it was pretty much a done deal...It was not the logical thing to do, but I knew that no matter what, I was getting over that hill...TODAY IS THE DAY that I finally climb the Mission Gorge Hill !!!
Starting the climb my excitement was quickly muted by the painful reality...oh boy Jimbo...this is getting awfully tough! How in the heck are you going to be able to endure the pain long enough to make it to the summit?!!! It looks like you're really going to have to dig deep this time...
As my powerful BFL legs (I love saying that!) chugged away, I searched for things to give me the emotional fuel I needed to show this hill who was boss...
"Remember, all the naysayers Jim? Remember those so-called friends who over the years implied that your illness was all in your head...that your problem was simply you were too weak? Remember, how they scoffed when you told them that someday you would once again be a serious bike rider? Remember?"
"Well, Jimbo, I dare any of them to join me on The Mission Gorge Hill !!! We'll see who's weak and who's tough! And I dare them to go through years of chronic illness and then tell me I have been anything less than a man of courage and character! I dare them!!!"
After I reached the summit I felt so empowered...
"Gee, Jim...did you have to get so emotional about climbing the Mission Gorge Hill??? Why yes...yes I did..."
When I got home, I looked at my heart rate chart and saw that my heart rate was pegged at 170bpm for the entire 6 minutes of climbing the hill... That's 93% of my max heart rate!!! Talk about intensity!!! Go ahead...tell me I'm a wuss! I dare ya! In fact, I double-dog dare ya!!!
Thanks for letting me share another one of my little adventures on the bike...I've had plenty of people to talk to over the years...but this is the first time I've ever had anyone who would listen...and who could understand what it means to take on a challenge like climbing the Mission Gorge Hill...

Thanks! I certainly appreciate your supportive replies but I'm anxious to hear about other BFLers having similar experiences running or whatever. I think it's inspirational and interesting to know what you guys do to get motivated to push through those intense and challenging moments doing your cardio.

Hello everyone. I am looking for suggestions for an easy whole food protein to take to work with me. Please dont suggest cottage cheese as I eat that stuff all the time. :) I love the stuff, I just need to vary my diet a little more. Any suggestions?
BFL buddy,Chuck

well there's the ever popular chicken breast! or your basic can of tuna~!
Seriously tho' if you have the time to cook either bf you go or the night before.. make up some of the tuna patties that Carole suggested in the EFL section! they are so good I've made them for lunch the past 2days! & made extra to bring to work with me-- they're good cold too! give em a try!
let me know whatcha think! :)

Meatloaf, Hamburger patties(either turkey or lowfat beef), Omlettes, etc. The list is endless...
Get some throwaway tupperware and fill it up! I rewash them and use em over and over. Enjoy!
PS. Have you looked at the Eating for Life book? Lots of options!

low-fat cheese sticks (or string cheese... not sure what the right name is). 2 of them have 5 g of fat, 18 g of protein. More portable than cottage cheese and a nice change. Great with an apple for a snack.

String Cheese or I take a few slices of deli meat.

String cheese! Two of the Frigo low fat string cheese and an apple are my regular after workout snack. They pop nicely into the backpack.

YM - Don't pay attention to the scale. I am at the end of week 6 and am not seeing much of a weight loss either. That being said, I have lost inches though and am noticing a change in my body. I'm not usually sore after my cardio and 10's either, but I am really pushing myself. I DO get sore after my UB and LBWOs though. C'mon and hang in there with me - we can do this and the results will come soon enough!!

Can someone explain how Karma works? I see it in my setting, but I don't know how to interput it. I figured out how to give it, but how do you receive it and what dot turns green?
Thanks!!!!

I am confused about how the karma points show up in your profile. This has always baffled me as to why there are negative numbers on Karma, but it shows that I previously received positive karma.
