Thanks everyone! This helped. I think weighing in the morning of my free day will be the best time. I've found that the scale really affects me mentally during the program. If I lose a lot, I get overly confident and may slack off... but if I don't lose, I work out way too much and don't eat enough...which is not good either.

What should I do? I've had this major head cold since Monday and have not worked out this week. I tried some light cardio but just felt too crappy. Dayquil won't touch it. Should I slog through this with some workouts or just rest?
Thanks

I O.D. on vitamin C and echinachea whenever I have a cold.
Body for Life Forum Message by one more time (31 posts) at 09:58 PM
Thanks I'll give it a try. Were you able to continue working out?
Body for Life Forum Message by Jennifer A (8 posts) at 10:07 PM
Echinachea should be taken at the onset of a cold for best results. The rule of thumb is if 'it' (your symptoms) are above the shoulders you can do a moderate workout. If you are sick in the chest with a fever just rest and drink plenty of fluids. But if you are feeling that crummy just take the time off and rest and recover - what's a few days out of a lifetime - especially when you are ill. Don't beat yourself up. Eat as well as you can according to plan. Do some at home exercises - crunches, push-ups etc to keep something going - to make you feel as if you are carrying on at least. Its not the end of the world. Take care - jennifer

Recently I have been sleeping 4-6 hours a night and taking a nap from 1-3 hours during the day. Is this bad??? I feel a little run down
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3130 posts) at 08:18 PM
I would think it would be better to get a solid 7-8 hours all at once. Is there a reason you can't?
Body for Life Forum Message by Jennifer A (8 posts) at 08:21 PM
Naps shouldn't be longer than 20-30 mins, otherwise it interrupts your evening sleep cycle. Only the elderly need longer naps during the day BECAUSE their quality of sleep is not as good overnight.

What I've read and been told by nutrition experts is that you should use CLA with the Omega fatty acid/oil supplement together. The omega helps the CLA work better. GNC carries one supplement that contains both together, so you don't have to have and take one of each.
Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (1518 posts) at 04:13 PM
Yes, you are right, I have learned from speaking to Top Fitness Competitors and Nutritionist that taking both works better and that is why I now take EFAs, Essential Fatty Acids.. which has both in it....as far as dosage, I take them with the main meals...Breakfast, Lunch and Supper!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3130 posts) at 08:10 AM
Most bars don't have the nutrition we need for a whole meal, and BFL bars specifically. That's why they're leaving you hungry, and it doesn't matter whether the flavor is good or bad, they're still going to leave you hungry. Obviously once in a while they're necessary for convenience, but it's best to stick with whole food and/or shakes.
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (159 posts) at 08:19 AM
If you have to eat a bar, the best brand I have found so far are the all-in-one bars by dexatrim. They have great fiber, decent protein, decent carbs, and hardly no sugar. It does contain sugar alcohol so this may upset your stomach but it didnt effect me at all. Im not saying eat this once a day or anything but when you are in a pinch I think they may even be better than myoplex bars nutritionaly.
Here is their website if you are interested.

Oh, I LOVE the chocolate mint ones! They remind me of Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies...the ones I used to eat half a box of in one sitting! I usually eat them if I know I'm having another meal in a couple hours...so I don't have the hunger problem. The shakes are good, but I do have the hunger problem with those.
Body for Life Forum Message by MaegenBFL (9 posts) at 03:05 PM
I've had almost all the bars I can possible try. I HATE 99% of them--they make my skin crawl and make me want to hurl when I try to eat them.
TWO I LOVE: BFL Peanut Caramel (a crisp bar, which most of the times taste MUCH better than a mushy bar) and SnacBar (from Champion Nutrion), available at GNC (so far the only place I've found it at)

MsJerra, pure creatine monohydrate contains no calories. You probably have a product, betagen maybe?, that contains other stuff in it that is supposed to help transport the creatine into the muscles more efficiently. Plain o creatine monohydrate is what Young Guns was refering to.

I know that everyone here is split on their opinion of ephedra products, but for those who wish to still partake, we found a place in our town that carries it. It's a product that actually wasn't banned because it's an actual medication used for asthma patients (a bronchodilator). Each pill contains 25mg of ephedra (comparable to what was in one Hydroxycut). You can find it online for under $10 for 48 pills and it's called Vasopro.
We were told to add it to whatever fatburner/thermogenic we liked. My husband has been using it for about a month now and he's having the same results from this combo as he had from the old formula Hydroxycut and other thermogenics that used to contain ephedra. Plus, it helps him stay awake on his night shift.
Please consult with your physician if you are unsure of any existing heart conditions or any other medical issues that may be exacerbated by this product. And don't take more than the recommended doseage.
I just thought I would put it out there for those who used to use ephedra and wanted it back. Hopefully, I won't get chewed out for this post, as I know many are against it. I personally never had any problems with ephedra and used it with great results. So please, no flaming? = )
Melanie
Body for Life Forum Message by Young Guns (1060 posts) at 12:34 AM
the only flame you'll get is one under your butt from the ephedra. I love the stuff ever since they took it off the market nothing has come close.

LOL...that's what my hubbie has been saying for the past month. He's so happy that he found a place to get it. We have been buying from the local store at $15/bottle, but found it for $9.50/bottle with a $5 s/h charge. So he's going to start getting it online instead. We still buy stuff from the local store because the guy who runs it is really knowledgeable about fitness/nutrition and he likes to give us freebies to try.

I have taken the ECA combination using the Vasopro off and on for a couple of months. Told my physician what I was taking and he said to make sure and cycle off and on, and take no more than the 25mg ephedra, 200mg caffeine and 1 standard aspirin and at least 4 hours between does. The only adverse side effect I have had is it makes me feel hot after working out and virtually eliminates my appetite. Some people have had serious reations others have not, listen to your body. Dynamic fitness has Vasopro for $7.99 and caffeine for about $5 with total shipping $5.95 on all orders.

One other thing to consider if you are cooking with the protein powder: I know that the whey starts breaking down with heat, so soy might be a better alternative.

Whey is better for post-workout, soy is better as a complete source of protein; especially for women. I love to have it in a shake with some cottage cheese and bananas with peanut butter before bed-slow digesting protein.

I mix it at work with a spoon with 1% Milk and count it as meal 4. While it has whey protein as part of it it tastes really good!

Body for Life Forum Message by NaturalPhysiques (207 posts) at 08:11 PM
People, it's not whey or soy that taste good or bad. By themselves, both taste horrible.
It's the COMPANY and FLAVORING you use ... different companies use different flavors, sweeteners, and other fillers to enhance the flavor.
Whey by itself is just as horrible as soy.
If you are looking for a protein powder based on flavor, nothing in the universe beats Muscle Provider and Ultimate Muscle Protein from Beverly International.

For a long time, for some reason I had it in my head that using creatine was just for men. I bought some for my husband after reading a lot on it and deciding it was a safe and effective thing to use while on the BFL program.
ANYWAY, any women out there using creatine? Is it producing better results for you? I decided after reading more that it could help me greatly in achieving what I want to do (get lean, replace fat with muscle tone which takes us less space). I have been taking a teaspoon after every workout as instructed by my local GNC expert. He has been following BFL for a while and his wife does this as well. I didn't do the loading dose--he said that was not necessary.
Just wondering if other women out there are spooning the creatine, too.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3130 posts) at 03:15 PM
I use Betagen but just started a week ago. I do already feel like I can up my weights in my next workouts, but I'm not sure if that's from the Betagen or just my natural progression from the training I've been doing.

I notice when I use it I can push myself harder...and it poofs up my mus-kels. I don't get the bloated feeling that most people mention, though. I save that "special" bloated feeling for those OTHER times (grr). TMI!! I don't use the BetaGen for that specific week.

Creatine works the same for men and women ... it's not specific and it doesn't appear to be impacted by hormones, so it is equally valid for men and women.

Teresa - I know this won't help but I've had night sweats consistently since I was about 25 - that means 15 years!!!!! And when I say consistently that means every night for months or years at a time, they'll disappear for a couple months and then they're back. When I say night sweats I mean water, changing clothes, sheets 4 or 5 times a night, getting out of bed and there is an outline from my toes to the top of my head - yes even my feet and hands will be wet where I can actually see water droplets on them - SO GROSS.
I've had many tests, no explanation. Hormones??? Don't think so, 2 pregnancies with no problem getting pregnant. If hormones were off I'd think there would be a problem with getting pregnant.
For me, the best I can come up with is its how my body handles stress (????????) I've always drank alot of water and out it comes at night. Its awful but its become a way of life for me. No help right? I knew it LOL.

Best gift my hubbie ever gave me was asking me to marry him and be mom to his 2 kids (at the time, they were 1 and 4). I've been their "mom" for almost 4 years and have been through potty training, losing the bottle, riding without training wheels, First Holy Communion, first day of 1st grade, first day of preschool, first broken nose...LOL. I can't imagine my life without them.
He was fairly creative with the engagement as well. We met on May 21st of 2001 and were married by January 16, 2002...ROFL. VERY fast engagement, considering he asked me on Christmas Eve.
I was handed a big box and told to open it. There was another, smaller box inside, and so forth, until I got to a really small box about the size of...yep, you guessed it, a ring box. My hands trembling, I opened up the box. Uh, no ring, no ring box. Nothing but a note that said, "Go look on the Christmas tree for something that doesn't belong". Okay, so I go over and I'm expecting to find ring tied to a branch, right? Nope. Just a Polariod photo of my goofy hubbie's face and he had written underneath, "Turn around". I turned around and he was on his knees, along with his 5 year old son and they asked me to marry them.
He does things like that all the time. Leaving little notes on my car while I was at school. Taking pictures of himself signing "I love you" on my digital camera or my camera phone. Leaving love notes under my pillow. Leaving flowers in our bathroom for me to discover when I get home. Tucking a love note inside my cooler that I take to work. He doesn't think he's romantic, but he is.
I don't think he'll grow out of it...his folks have been married for 35 years and still do stuff like that. My mother-in-law calls her husband "her prince". It's very cute how much in love they are and I hope that years from now, my husband and I will be like that.
And I found him in the most ridiculous place....a bar!! LOL. I was a cocktail waitress and he was my customer.

My best present thus far is my doggie!! He's a red/tan Pomeranian and I got him for my birthday. I thought I was going to get a Yankee's jacket (which i didn't really want, but wouldn't mind having). My bf gave me a bag and I was like "huh?!?" the bag was moving and in it was a small cute lil' puppy!! His name is Louie so cute!!

Thanks....he tells me that he stopped doing those kinds of things with his previous wife because she didn't appreciate him for it. She would make nasty comments about his "stupid" gestures (as she called them). He knows what a softie I am and how it gets to me. Nothing is nicer than having a day from hell waiting tables, then walking out to your car to find a note tucked under the wiper blades that said, "Just wanted you to know I was thinking of you and that I love you"...especially when home is 25 miles away, in another town!
I still remember one year for Valentine's Day we didn't have a lot of money. He bought 3 roses and he attached homemade cards to each of them. The first rose was for our past together, the second was for our current lives together, and the third was for our future. They each had a special message in them and I still have those cards tucked away in a box.

The best present that Kerry ever got me was the Body For Life Book. I know it sounds corny but it's true. At first I was a little hurt because I took it as,well you know, maybe he wanted me to loose weight and all. The real reason he got it was because I was always going to the chiropractor and massage therapist for my aches and pains. He thought if I could stregthen my body, I would have a better quality of life. Well that was an understatement. I feel the best I have felt in years. No more chiropractors, no more massages (unless for pleasure ) and no more aches and pains!!!
Thanks Kerry,
Love - NJ

Well, I know I have said this many times, but It won't hurt to say it again. My husband IS THE BEST!!
The BEST Present my hubby ever gave me was: His Love and Our Children!
Read this story and tell me if this is not the Best Present in the world!
Bill was married before and had 2 children, I was married before but had NO children. I wanted children, Bill didn't want more children, we was happy with 2.
Sounds simple enough,
We got married, I still wanted children. I wanted and needed to be a mama but>>>........... Bill had already had a vasectomy.ok! what's next?
Bill had it reversed
It worked but it didn't work as far as me getting pregant. we then tried everything there was to try, including, artificial and infetro, nothing worked, I cried. We became foster parents and we adopted 2 wonderful girls one at 14 and how is now 25 and has 3 beautiful children, that's my 3 grandkids on the exercise equipment in my profile, and we adopted Sarah when she was 7 and is now 16. I have the family I longed for and I still have Bill's love,We have been married now for 221/2 yrs He thinks I am the greatest and I know he is the Greatest! Is just a sweet Love Story
The End!

My hubby always manages to out-do me in the holiday gift department. In 2000 we were going to have our 3rd baby and He just surprised me christmas AM with a video camera. I hadn't even bothered to ask for one cause I didnt' think we could afford one, but he know we needed one for the kids. He set it up playing on the fireplace so it was rolling when we came into the family room christmas morning. It captured my huge surprise on film, it was so fun! It's too bad we never have any money, he'd spoil me rotten!! He is such a giving guy and really loves me a lot. YAY!!!!

ok, you can do the same type of thing with salmon. salmon from the tin can be kind of funky, but if you bake your own and use it, it's much better. so you take a portion of salmon, 1 egg white, chopped green onion, freshly grated ginger, some soy sauce, and some ground oatmeal. sorry, i don't have all the ratios on hand. you can kind of do it to your liking. a client i work for loves these. i've never tried them. and you cook the patty in a hot saute pan with a little olive oil or cooking spray.

I LOVE braunschweiger! My mom used to eat that on Saltines with white onion strips. *mouth waters*
And S**T-on-a-shingle CAN be good, but it sound like you were experiencing a bad version perhaps? The way we had it, you toast the bread (hence the shingle), and the topping is dried beef (or corned beef) in a white gravy poured over a dollop of mashed potatoes.
We also ate those biscuits-in-a-can (the kind that explode when you open them) ALL the time. I was addicted to those things.
This wasn't a food, but something gross I recall from our refrigerator in childhood. Both my parents were drinkers when I was young, so we always had a pitcher of that yucky frozen lemonade (the pulpy, sour kind) in the fridge. Ugh.

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3130 posts) at 03:01 PM
I've been told that the problem with the recipe for the carrot muffins is that you need to use the equivalent of the measure of brown sugar for the brown sugar substitute. I think it says like 1/2 cup (I am at work and don't have the book with me) and it should be the equivalent of 1/2 c brown sugar, which is less of the substitute.
Or something like that.

4. If things are really, really bad, a good, long look at my before pictures. (especially the rear shot)
5. Turn on some loud music and dance dance dance!

OK I have been having this sugar craving all day wondering how in the heck to cure it. I had these sugar-free jello pudding packs I bought for just an issue. But you know you can't have a carb w/out protein LOL. So I actually became creative and it is so yummy! It's a protein shake LOL someone has probably already come up with it but let's not rain on my parade LOL ...
CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKE SHAKE:
1 c. cottage cheese
2 containers of Jello sugar free pudding snacks the choc. vanilla swirl is what I used
4 packets of splenda or to your taste it took me 4
6 ice cubes
Blend in blender until rich, creamy, and smooth. Pour in cup and enjoy
It tastes like a Chocolate Cheesecake shake thats it's name! Ohhh .... my it tastes like chocolate cheesecake but in shake form. And for people who DON't like Cottage Cheese you won't even know it is in there. It is a yummy not so bad for ya treat.
Tell me what ya think ....

Tonight we official started our vacation, although we don't leave for Florida until the morning we have every packed and ready to go. So tonight we went out to eat at Outback steak House.
We ordered a drink, small salad, Baked pototoe, Steak an Hot bread. I Drank some water, in between my drink and ate my salad, it was great, I had a piece of hot bread, I had approx 10 bits of steak which was out of this world and a few bits of baked pototoe loaded with everything, I drank more water and even had a 2nd glass of water. then I was so stuffed, I had a plate of food that was to die for and I was so stuffed I couldn't breathe anymore. I got a to go doggie box which the doggie will not get this steak, I'll have that sucker for breakfast,LOL!
Anyway, the story ends, that Bill and I were sitting there laughing about how full I was, guess it's that my stomach is used to eating 6 small meals and not alot at one sitting. but anyway Bill said, yep your tummy shrunk, remember when you would eat all of that and then ask for a dessert and coffee and then get home and go pick on cookies the rest of the night? Yep I remember those days, it wan't long ago.
Then Bill commented on how I drank 2 glasses of water with my meal, he said, It's funny, I know you drink water all day at home now, but we have never been in a resurant where you drank the water and asked for a refill of water. you hated water, you used to be where you would die of thirst before you drank any water.
Yep, BFL has changed me in only 5 months, I am on the road to recovery and I'm loving the feeling and loving the new me!

Such a bittersweet experience going to a restaurant anymore, isn't it? Sweet, because we realize that we have developed good eating habits... and there's no pain involved in eating modest sized meals. Bitter, because we can remember, as you did, those days when we might try to eat everything on the menu... only to look for more junk to eat at home.
Excellent, Linda, excellent.
It's a new life! And, oh, what a life!
Enjoy you vacation.

When To Do Cardio
Personally I believe cardio to be the best and most effective when it is done first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Your body has not had any type of carbohydrate fuel for many hours, since you were sleeping, so you will burn bodyfat more efficiently as fuel.
I would not advise doing cardio before a workout, unless it is a brief 5-10 minute low intensity cardio to warm up. It is important to remember that your goal here is to build muscle and you want your body to be in an optimal state for your workouts. Weight training after cardio is not an optimal state, because the cardio will deplete your body of glycogen leaving you with less energy to lift weights. You need to save your energy for the important task at hand, which is to lift hard and heavy. Cardio after your workout is better, as you may be able to burn some extra bodyfat, especially after a leg workout. By doing the weights first, you deplete your body of glycogen.
Once depleted, your body can burn fat efficiently. However there is one drawback to doing cardio after a workout is that cortisol levels may become too high and put you in a catabolic state, which can break down muscle tissue and hinder growth. Personally I believe the best bet is to split up your training so that there is ample time between cardio and weight training to recover.found at this site:
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/mike1.htm
hope this helps as this is what I've been doing for a week now
Body for Life Forum Message by annie1104 (90 posts) at 10:01 AM
I think you just have to work your way up. I, too, was super impressed with the 300-400 leg press people on here. I keep pushing myself though and now I'm up to 195!! 300 is my goal :)
Oh, and I don't know how accurate this is, but I read somewhere that you should only do the leg press after your legs are really warmed up. Anyone know if there is any truth to this??
Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (65 posts) at 10:29 AM
Annie, I would err on the side of caution and follow that advice about warming the muscles for leg press. One way to do that is to do a light weight (heavy enough it requires some effort) for your first set of 12 reps. I think the BETTER way to warm up those large muscle groups is with 5-7 minutes of light, fast cardio before you begin lifting. No need to stretch before you lift.
JMHO :-)
As for the leg press question, yes -- there are a lot of different machines. I usually stick with the same one when I do a leg press rotation -- I just find it easier to guage my progress that way.

I was watching one of the muscle heads work legs this am, amazing definition and size. He filled the leg press completely up, 10 45lb plates on each side! Its the 45 degree one you push up. He could only move the sled about 6 inches - his leg muscles are so big thats all the room he had to move.

I cannot seem to do back exercises right?!? I never feel the burn and always feel it more in my arms than my back. I try to focus on contracting the muscle but I never seem to really feel it. Any suggestions?
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1921 posts) at 11:38 AM
When you are doing them, focus on your back muscles and imagine trying to keep a role of coins in between your shoulder blades as you pull back.
You might have to go down slightly in your weights also, cause you might be using your arms too much to pull back instead of your actual back muscles themselves.
Try it and see how it goes.

I don't know if it's normal, but I don't really "feel" it in my back either - until maybe the next day, and then only if I hit my 10's.
However, there have been some definite improvements in my back over the first 4 weeks, so I can't really complain. Something must be working.

I can't remember who it was, but someone on this site recommended www.bodybuilding.com. So, for the past hour I've been reading some of their stuff. Here is one of the articles I found. Now I'm confused.
EMPTY STOMACH WITH HIGH-INTENSITY TRAINING?
Here's a simple question: How can you train on an empty stomach while keeping the high-intensity training pace up? You can't. This is a contradiction. You'll either faint during training because of the lack of fuel prior to your training to keep your workout energized or you'll end your training early due to the same reason: no fuel to energize or keep your workout intensified! You can't have or do both. It's one or the other.
Either train on an empty stomach in a fasted state not eating prior to your workout with low-intensity training for a longer duration to accomplish less in more time or train while fueled prior to your workout with high-intensity training for a shorter duration to accomplish more in less time! Pro-bodybuilders are perhaps the only elite athletes who can afford to train on an empty stomach because they have so much muscle mass! They actually over-build themselves using supplemental aids in their "off-season" and can afford to lose muscle (which they expect) while on a "pre-contest" diet, for the purpose of getting "ripped" and winning the prize!
FUEL AND THE LACK OF IT
Not eating prior to training is a mistake. Not eating will force:
1) You to leave your workout prematurely
2) Your body to break down more muscle to generate fuel.
The purpose of eating prior to training is to:
1) Elevate your metabolism
2) Stay fueled during training.
Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (2162 posts) at 03:09 PM
It is a very controversial subject. You can find a group of people who say yes it's good and no it's not good. The truth of the matter is that MANY BBuilders to get that ripped look do AM fasted cardio (directly after waking up.) It works but no scientific proof.
Then you have a scientific side saying that it is bad. It is not good and po po po. So you have to draw your own conclusion on it. But early AM cardio if it does not bother you as in feeling sick, light headed, uncomfortable physically, besides the fact of waking up early discomfort but you know what I mean. then by all means it is a good way to burn fat.
AS far as weight training personally I do not agree with lifting in a fasted state. It is my personal preference. I prefer to feel strong & awake. Warmed up if you will.
Hope that helps a little.

From Dr Hussman -
"In general, you'll maximize your fat loss if you wait about an hour after your workouts before eating. The exception, in my view, is when you smell ammonia. Ammonia is essentially nitrogen, and that sensation after a workout is a signal that you've raised your cortisol levels enough to trigger the breakdown of amino acids by the liver (gluconeogenesis). When the body needs energy, it metabolizes glycogen, then fat, then protein. If one isn't fast enough, it goes down the list. But if it's going to feed on protein, you want it to go after something other than muscle tissue. So if you smell ammonia, you should have a protein and carbohydrate containing supplement immediately after your workout, preferably along with a protein stimulating supplement such as L-Leucine (whey protein is about 20-25% Leucine)."
There is a lot more at this link: http://www.hussman.org/fitness/index.htm#workouts
Good Luck!

You need to read EVERYTHING on training and nutrition with a grain of salt. Read it, analyse it and then come up with your own conclusions. Every body reacts to everything differently. There really is no blanket statement "it's better on an empty stomach" or "it's better to have a small amount of food in your stomach". Just like different weight training meathods work for different people so do different cardio meathods. There's sound scientific findings to support both theories. So which one is right? They both are. Clear as mud isn't it?

To add to this I actually recently begain doing my weights in a fasted state as well as my cardio. I've had nothing but positive results. I pop my fat burner in the morning and I take some flax oil and fish oil and then hit the gym. My weights are still going up and my muscles are getting larger and I'm losing fat. Everyone is different just do whatever you feel works best for you.

5-K race. My gym is hosting a 5-K in July and I am interested in it. I am just not sure I am ready for it though. I am a walker, I have never been a jogger or a runner. In the past I tried to Jog but my knees or my hips would hurt soooooo bad or i would just plain run out of breath. My husband tells me that my muscles or/and ligaments are weak and just need to be strengthened with weights. Anyway what advice do you have for me about training for a 5-K and will my knees and hip stop hurting after i get used to it. Thanks!!!

A friend of mine has started working out with me, but she only wants to do cardio (like 45 minutes). Does anyone have a good explanation on why you have to do weights as well?
Thanks.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3130 posts) at 03:13 PM
Because building lean muscle makes you stronger, increases your metabolism (which helps your cardio workouts burn more fat and keeps the fat burning longer), and helps you reshape your body.
Body for Life Forum Message by Chris (334 posts) at 03:13 PM
It all depends on what you are trying to achieve. The cardio will burn fat and take of the weight, but doing weights will help you have muscle definition.
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (159 posts) at 03:16 PM
Lifting also helps get rid of fat and weight. The more muscle you have on you the higher your metabolism is. Higher metabolism = more calories burned just sitting around the house.

Muscles are our fat burning furnaces!! There are many other benefits to developing muscle (again, Jeremy can probably fill us all in on some important stuff here), no matter what age a person is. I know MANY women who just do cardio, work their butts off - but, alas...the "butt" is not off, it is still there. One problem could be not working in their target heart rate for maximum fat burning. They might not be putting enough intensity into it. The opposite could also be true - they could be working so hard; and staying above their AT for the majority of the time and not burning fat - in fact, probably burning muscle and lowering their metabolism. How about that for totally wasting your time and hard work to create the OPPOSITE reaction in your body than you are doing it for in the first place! When you are working in your proper fat burning hr zone, you are burning calories during the session - but that is it. If you do HIIT types of sessions and go over your AT a few times and again have that intensity in your workout, you won't be burning as many calories during the workout, but will continue burning afterwards - as long as you wait to eat, it will burn body fat stores. Building muscle helps you to burn more calories at rest. I believe the figure is 50-70 more calories per day at rest per every one lb of muscle. Doesn't sound like a lot, but hey, I have put on 3 lbs of muscle, so I figure just sitting around I am burning 1050 - 1470 more calories per week! And besides, bodies look so much better when there is muscle showing. If this person is looking to be toned, then she will lose fat and get to her goal MUCH more quickly by doing resistance training.

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (159 posts) at 03:49 PM
Chris is right too, I just think that when most women hear "weights will help you have muscle definition" it turns them off because they have images of bodybuilders in their head. To really gain muscle and look like a bodybuilder you have to eat way more than you should on the BFL plan and spend more time in the gym. It just cant/wont happen on the BFL program. It will give you muscle definition, just not the way they imagine.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3130 posts) at 04:02 PM

It's simple ... if the person wants to lose fat, they'll do cardio and weights. If they want to lose less fat, and also lose muscle, they'll just do cardio.
This isn't just opinion ... this has been researched extensively. You burn much more fat when you combine weight training with cardio than just doing cardio alone, and if you do no weight training, then you lose muscle mass as well.

ok, i just wanted to share this. i have a friend at the gym who does cardio every day. maybe she takes one day off. each day she does intense cardio for 1 1/2 hours. she goes at top speed on the big steps or she'll do the big steps then teach a really intense spinning class. i have no idea how she does it. i know this isn't healthy, but i don't really feel that i know her well enough to put my two cents in.

I posted this in the exercise section of "cellulite on hamstrings" by getherdone. Just a bit of an explanation and hopefully it will make sense to someone.
**************************************************************
This what I saw once on T.V. You have to see the pictures but I'll try to explain.
They showed the difference between male & female. Think of little threads attaching the skin to muscle. A woman's threads are lined up like soldiers, side by side, straight up and down. A males threads are criss crossed, think of a box of spilt toothpics, gathered up, they're not straight up and down but rather overlapping one another, but bunched together.
What happens is these threads break free and fat deposits collect in these breaks. A male first of all has less fat but when a few threads break there are the other overlapping ones that keep the skin attached and therefore you don't see a "pocket of fat" collection. A woman's threads break free and there is a pocket left with no threads holding the skin to the muscle leaving room for fat to collect. Keep in mind some of this is water too.
I know this might be hard to envision but I tried my best. I've had cellulite spots probably from the age of 12 - 14 and I definately was not overweight. I am now getting my bodyfat lower and lower but still, the same spots are there and actually one side being worse than the other.
I believe what I've read. You cannot fix this damage, you can reduce the fat deposit somewhat but you cannot repair this damage. No cream ever invented can penetrate all of the skin layers and get in there and actually repair what has happened. It truly is a shame that some manufacturers claim this is possible with their cream. It seems the higher the price tag for such nonsense, the more believable it is. Don't believe it.

yes Udenia,
I've seen a show in that, but can't remember what it was called. They put a gel on the area, and run this thing over it like an ultrasound, and it breaks up the cellulite. The body the deals with it like normal fat.

My wife had major(to her) cellulite after the birth of our kids. She had lipo on her thighs and buttocks and I couldn't tell much if any difference(ssshh don't tell her). She has always done cardio and light weight training. Since we joined the gym and working with much heavier weights and HIIT training, she has lost enough BF to see her abs and most of the cellulite is gone. So, IMHO, stick to the program and watch the cellulite fade!

My feelings? I am SUPER happy when I it on other people--I feel GROSSED out by mine and like to know that I'm not one of the very few to have been plagued with it. Just check my profile and you'll see how I feel about cellulite. It's my arch-enemy and I swear I will take it down with BFL. Bill Phillips even says in his book that many women have gotten rid or theirs with BFL, so that reminds me to work even harder!
I have tried creams, etc. and the one to help the most is Avon's cellulite cream (can't remember the name).
Also, try SKIN BRUSHING. Read up on that and you'll see that beside skin-tightening and helping to detox the skin, brushing your whole body has lots of wonderful benefits (BABY soft skin, improved circulation, smoothing out of bumps, etc, and detoxification aid for reduced cellulite). This is a little gem I discovered a few years back and it is AWESOME!. Brush twice a day, just like your teeth.

Quick question for you TnT, "How often do you do Plyometrics?" and "Do you do these instead of your LB routine or do you do Plyometreics in addition to LB, how do you work this all in? Thanks!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (2162 posts) at 03:00 PM
I do them with my LBWO. I do my dead lifts different variations. I use the free weights leg press, anyhoo I do plyo's at the end or in the middle. Sometimes in between sets I sprint. Sometimes I do a set of sprints prior to LBWO. Sometimes I start the workout with the plyometrics. I do not use Plyo's as my only LBWO. I incorporate them into the LBWO workout. Yes, I am very very tired after my LBWO. Yes, it is not easy. But it is worth it.;-)
Some LBWO's I don't use them at all. Rest is good. It is all about variation. I had to take a 2 weeks off from my sprinting even though I did sneak a few in there cause I was craving it. But, rest from these demanding plyo's is necessary as well.
Hope that helps.
Teresa
Body for Life Forum Message by Lala (472 posts) at 07:29 PM

Body for Life Forum Message by Coco (349 posts) at 12:10 AM
i think the cals are too low. check out the hussman website, if you haven't already. it has a lot of really good information. also, your body goes into a fasting mode when you're sleeping. so, your metabolism slows down. by not eating in the morning you're prolonging that fasting period instead of revving up your metabolism with a meal.
Body for Life Forum Message by Bflmom2004 (484 posts) at 12:20 AM
Jamber...I agree, your cals are too low. I didn't realize that mine were too low also...I kinda hit a roadblock, and am not real sharp on nutrition, so I called EAS and chatted with one of their BFL counselors...I told her, "I weigh 158 lbs, I am 5'4" and my goal is to loose fat, and build muscle...help!" She recommended between 1500-1600 cals a day, broken into 6 meals is about 250 cals per meal, and 25g protien, 25g carbs, and 5g fat per meal...this has helped me tremendously in planning, and we will see how it works over the next 2 weeks...also, not eating til noon girl...ugh, I agree with supergirl...AREN'T YOU HUNGRY??? lolol, I'd be dying...
Body for Life Forum Message by Young Guns (1060 posts) at 12:35 AM
eat more....peanut butter has been my solution.
Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (572 posts) at 12:42 AM
The only thing about the hussman site, is maybe that's where you got your calorie info..i don't know, But according to that site, I should be eating around 1100, but that's too low. Not to sound like a broken record but try eating a bit more at each meal, that may kickstart your progress.
Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (65 posts) at 12:57 AM
I'm on that same schedule, too, Janel. But I've taken to just eating a breakfast when I get up and doing my workout -- weights or cardio -- after. Of all the crappy thins I do to hurt my progress, eating before exercise is the LEAST of my worries.
:-)
Body for Life Forum Message by Psyched-4-C2 (51 posts) at 06:48 AM
See if you can track down the posts on zig-zag cycling. I believe there is some info on it at Skwigg as well. I think the recommendation is to every third day have a clean 2000-2200 cal day, then go back down. If you stay too low for too many consecutive days it can stop progress real fast. Also reevaluate what you are eating, is it the same day in day out? mix it up a bit.
just a suggestion :-)
Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (811 posts) at 08:01 AM
Women should NEVER go below 1200 calories per day, period. I know that Hussman's site shows below for me, too - I would go by the top end of the range for fat burning. You are slowing down your metabolism by eating too few calories, if I had to guess. I got caught up in the calorie counting for a while and it drove me crazy...I went back to the simple palm sized protein and fist sized carb and it worked well and got me back on track.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3130 posts) at 08:04 AM
I think you should eat when you first get up, that'll get your calories up and will likely better fuel your workout!

Free weights are KILLIN me...I am a buff little queen on my bowflex, but give me a set of dumbells, and I am a sissy girl...lol...When I am doing my tricep kickbacks, I can NOT increase my weight, is this ok? I am already so darn light...like 7.5 pounds (was up to 30 on bowflex...sigh) I am doing the 12, 10, 8, 6, 12 still, but with the same weight at this time...is this ok????
Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (572 posts) at 12:45 AM
I find tricep kickbacks pretty tough to up the weight too...how bout trying a higher weight even if you can only do a rep or two...? It's probably a good alternative to the bowflex if it is challenging you a different way.
Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (65 posts) at 12:54 AM
Go very slow on those kickbacks and concentrate on squeezing the muscle -- even 3-lb dbells make my triceps ache when I do kickbacks. I'd say that when you go up in weight/reps so much that your elbows start to wobble out of proper allignment and you're inadvertently bending your spine to lift the weight, you should reduce the weight or call it a "10."
Body for Life Forum Message by Bflmom2004 (484 posts) at 01:04 AM
Ok, now I am really FREAKING out...was just doing the seated lateral raises for my shoulders, and when I was done I saw like a bazillion flippin veins in my forearm...and they were bulging out...they don't hurt, my forearm feels warm, but what the heck!!! Am I just being a total flippin freak...is this vein thing normal...sheesh, I am such a spaz tonight...sigh...
Body for Life Forum Message by Connie (85 posts) at 05:43 AM
lol, the vein thing is normal. You have a lot of blood pumping through those veins from working out.... This is a good thing!!
Body for Life Forum Message by ShannonDH (46 posts) at 06:12 AM
Yep, I noticed the other day that when I finished a killer UBWO my arms were very red, expecially my upper arm area. It was shocking at first but made sense.
Body for Life Forum Message by one more time (31 posts) at 06:13 AM
I have the same experience. Tricep kickbacks are very hard as it is. Even harder if you're doing them as your last station. Over the past 5 weeks, I've increased my weight on all upper body lifts except tricep kick back. All of the other other upper body lifts that I do (except curl) involve triceps as well. By the time I get to kick backs, my triceps are already spent. So instead of concentrating on weight, I do it nice and slow with a good squeeze at full extension. That really kills them.
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (1715 posts) at 06:50 AM
Are these the ones that you lay down and use 2 dumbells or the one where you stand and use one dumbell behind your head?
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3130 posts) at 07:58 AM
Neither, Goddessa. Kickbacks are where you put one hand on your bench (and a knee), and with the other arm, dumbbell in hand, you straighten your arm behind you.
You might try different triceps exercises when you use dumbbells, like extensions, french press (aka skull crushers, lol), and my favorite, the 1-arm pronated extension. Check out this site for ideas: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exername.php?Real=%3C%3D+7&Name=&MainMuscle=&Equip=Dumbbell&Isolation=&order=Name
I found that once I stopped doing kickbacks I was able to increase my triceps strength by doing the other exercises.

I've used tanning beds consistently for the past few years. I am close to 20 lbs lighter since I last used one and AM I EVER UNCOMFORTABLE. There is a small bone (right above the crack of your bum) that I absolutely cannot lie on. If I lie flat its like there's no fat there to cushion it so I have to lie kind of sideways. I sure the heck am not complaining but boy what a difference!!!!! It hurts!!!!!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by Connie (85 posts) at 05:40 AM

They should post a warining on those things! I have not used a tanning bed in about 12 years. My gym offers free tanning, and the heat feels so good after workout. I laid on my back several times and a bone in the center of my spine evidently got push out of place. My back killed me for 3 weeks, it even hurt to drive, couldn't even begin to do dead lifts. I started laying on my stomach and 100% of the pain went away. Initially I thought I hurt it lifting, but it was a freaking tanning bed injury!
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (598 posts) at 09:33 AM
I go to a stand-up booth. The only problem there is that you have to lift your arms over your head and pooch your butt out to avoid boob shadows and a butt shadow. Sigh. Of course, if you are thin enough that it hurts your backbone, you probably don't have these worries.

I am on C1 W2, I just had my free day yesterday...I didn't go overboard but I ate more. MY question is I lost 3.8 my first week. Today the scale is back up 3. Am I going to have to fight all week to just get back down where I was? I have been doing WW for almost 5 years and lost 60 pounds. I know from experience that weight hangs around...I just don't want to be in a cycle that is back and forth.
An help would be appreciated.
Thanks Amy
Body for Life Forum Message by curvature (66 posts) at 07:42 AM
Never weigh after free day! It's just water weight. To really gain 3 pounds in one day, you'd have to eat around 10500 calories.
If you weigh later on in the week, you'll find that you're back down to where you were, and perhaps then some.
My free day is Sunday. I don't weigh again until Wednesday.

Whoo Hoooooooo... Stepped on the scale today and have lost 2.5 lbs.. Only 1.5 to go to get rid of what I gained when I was in NY.... And yes, I know this is water weight, but it is also due to my increase in cardio on my weight days and getting back to the HIIT.

Yes it is and that is why I love this program. Went to a different Gym today and was so disappointed in the lack of equipment and the equipment that they did have was so different from my regular gym.. But I adapted and over came and tried new equipment so that I could complete my lbwo. Biggest disappointment was that there wasn't a smith machine...... Bummer.

I am so pissed, I had it in the bag and ran out of time again. You know some times you are just feeling it and everything is going smoooooooth. I should have pushed it a little harder and a little sooner. Anyway I hit 3.23 miles in 20 minutes and I was cruising at 12 mph. I should have increased to 12 mph 30 seconds earlier and I I could have maybe hit 3.3!! Only one little hitch, my left calf got real tight at about 5 minutes but I kept on SHIITing, It was not a cramp, it just got tight and is still a little tight 3 hours later. Walking with a little limp.
I have 3 days left and one more SHIIT before C1 is over, I hope to have my best SHIIT ever on friday morning. I want to complete C1 with a bang. Hey, Rod great job on that 3.2, that is so awesome!!!!!!!! Did you start to scream, when I hit 3.2 for the first time I was so pumped I wanted to start screaming and yelling.
For the rest of you cardio freaks, It does not matter if you do 1 mile or 3 miles in 20 minutes, its all about hitting your 10's and taking things to a new level. It is so awesome that everyone is getting on board with this thing. Thanks Coco for getting it all started, your the reason I am limping around the office today!! :)
Have a great Cardio Day!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Chris (334 posts) at 11:29 AM
Thanks Goddessa, If I had you there this morning I would have hit 3.25. It is kinda funny, I am almost 12 week into this thing and I am still tweaking things to improve. I have a revised plan to hit 3.25 and beyond. It will work if this 36 year old body can take it. I am going to PUSH it to the limit, no more screwing around, I could have done it this morning but I just did not have the will power to push myself earlier. This has happened to me 2 times now, I think I have learned my lesson. I know what I was doing wrong and I am gonna fix it.
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (1715 posts) at 11:33 AM

She called me this morning to get my time, I thought about telling her I did it, but I told the truth, maybe I will get some rest for my Friday SHIIT. Now I really have something to SHIIT for. :)

Oh man. I am on edge right now about to SHIIT my pants. I can't believe this! Chris, that is freakin' awesome. You are going to have 3.25 by the end of your challenge!! But really--who will get to 3.25 FIRST? I get to do cardio in the morning, and I am pretty sure that it's going to happen then!! If I get there first, does that mean that your wife won't be "nice" to you?!?! HAHAHA! I have a feeling that your wife is a very very intelligent woman. You may be running 3.5 miles in 20 minutes if she keeps this up. Good luck Friday--I know you'll have the greatest SHIIT ever!

I can't believe I missed my cardio yesterday. I'm SO PISSED OFF! Our car broke down and then we had to go to Peter's sister's house via a ride from his brother and then we had to stay at his sister's house until his brother wanted to leave. By the time we got home the gym was closed. I'm so upset with myself. Here I am supposed to be all gung ho and I missed day two cardio. AAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHH! I'm going to do cardio today instead of LBWO, I think I need to add more cardio to my routine anyway. Oh well, have a good day everyone.

Monica,
Here's a little secret. It's all relative. You consider missing one workout screwed up ... but you know what? If you dust yourself off and move on, you will be ahead of 96% of those who start a program, because that's how many never finish it!
That's right. In a room full of 1,000 people, you can beat 960 of them just by saying, okay, I missed my cardio, it's in the past, time to move, and finish.
You get what you focus on. Your thoughts expand. You missed a cardio? Fine. What does getting frustrated or focusing on it do for you? NOTHING. It's in the past.
You know one of the biggest causes of fat gain / muscle loss? STRESS! So you can continue to create stress (which isn't real ... stress isn't something you can show someone, it only exists in your mind) or you can CHOOSE to say, okay, I missed it, I'll do better next time.
The past is gone. It's not real anymore. Where are you today? You're HERE, NOW. So get over it and get on with it.
Jeremy
Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (1518 posts) at 11:21 AM
If I know I am going to miss the gym, find an open spot on the floor and knock out 50 pushups, hands in for Triceps and out for Chest/Back, then find a counter / sofa and do some tricep dips, then knock out 50 situps,, knock out some of the legs exercises I have been posting and there you go!!
ok, You covered alot there!!!!!!!!!
Pick yourself up and knock the next workout....out of the park! good luck sweetie!
Body for Life Forum Message by Monica (579 posts) at 01:15 PM

Body for Life Forum Message by FaithPCFL (50 posts) at 01:31 PM
yeah, what Jeremy said!
Monica, remember, it's PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION!
Be hard enough on yourself to not let missed workouts be a habit, but easy enough on yourself to get past it and continue going forward.
is there anything you can do that doesn't require a gym? I know yesterday was so darn hot in the garage, even with the fan on! I just hopped off the eliptical and took off running down the street! LOL! I know I looked funny! I had my water bottle, and I just finished my cardio on the street!
did you just start a new challenge on Monday? I did, Challenge #2.

Hi Everyone,
I have decided to introduce myself and actually finish my 12 week challenge, so please give me support!
Anyhow, I have had personal bumps in the road that have prevented me from finishing (like everyone). Yes some of them I could have kept the ball rolling with, but I didn't. The others - surgery - I couldn't. But now I am back and I am so committed that I have even (Gulp) posted my before pictures. They are hard to look at for sure, I used to be so athletic and skinny..... but that is why I am here. The funny thing about the pictures is that I had pictures from my first challenge and I saw my progress, but was too scared to post them, then I found out I was having knee surgery and knew I would be limited in my workouts for a while, but I had complications so it took my longer and I got discouraged. All in the past.
Looking forward to the encouraging words!
Joe

Good for you for coming back! I've made many fits and starts myself since I started BFL in December, but you know what? I'm still WAY ahead of where I was and WAY, WAY, WAY ahead of where I might have ended up had I not made some changes.
For some folks, BFL is just another goal to set and reach in 12-week increments. Good for them!
For me (and for others, I suspect), BFL is the tool I'm using to teach myself how to set goals and how to push myself and how to continue with something no matter how hard it seems at times or how L-O-N-G it takes to achieve satisfaction.
As long as you don't walk away for good, there is no failure. :-)

Yes, I understand it's hard to push oneself to reach one's "10". It doesn't feel that great to be nauseous. The sore muscles are a pain, literally. And, at first, you are tired from fitting the WOs into your busy schedule. But
I'll bet every person on this board can recount some experience they've had that was much harder than doing BFL.
I'll start. Being on bedrest for five months and giving birth by emergency c-section to a premature baby with health problems was much "harder" than BFL. In contrast, BFL is a real pleasure! I am so grateful to be physically able to do the challenge!!!!!!!
Ok, let it rip, folks!
Body for Life Forum Message by NaturalPhysiques (207 posts) at 11:13 AM
BFL isn't hard. People are just lazy. It's the tradeoff between long term happiness and short term gratification - far easier to sit on the couch and watch the TV.
It always amuses me when people tell me how hard and restrictive BFL is. I've visited a few third world countrise and watched people live out of holes dug in the ground with pieces of metal pulled over the top for shelter. Two other pits: one to hold the fire for cooking, the other for feces. They walk several miles to work and harvest from sunrise to sundown for the US equivalent of $1 - $2 for the day.
And here, we complain about getting up early to do an easy 20 minutes of cardio!
Sheesh!
Hard?
Hard to me was having my knee torn open, part of my tendon snipped, holes drilled in my bone and then bolted in place to reconstruct my ACL.
Hard was the year of therapy after it.
Hard was finishing the last few miles of the half marathon I just ran.
Hard was running sprints in middle school with a teammate on my back, falling and scraping the skin off my arms and legs but getting up and still finishing the run.
No, wait, those weren't hard.
You know what was hard?
Hard was telling my son, "No, not now" when he asked me to play basketball with him because I could barely tie my shoes before I had to stop to catch my breath.
Hard was waking up and looking in the mirror and hating the reflection that sneered back at me.
Hard was having severe stomach pains that would leave me doubled over and getting sick every few months because I was so unhealthy.
Hard was finding out my wife was pregnant and wondering how my daughter would grow up having an obese, lazy father who drank himself unconscious all the time.
Yep, that was hard ... BFL and living healthy is insanely EASY.
Jeremy

Working 7/12's for 6 month straight, btw is was also the night shift. All I did was work and sleep.
Trying to get my 34" waist pants on to my 36" waist. :)
BFL is a piece of cake for me, I love working out 99.9% of the time, and the eating I could improve, I do pretty good. Sorry about the cake reference.

Jeremy, no kidding that was hard!
What prompted my post was reading "The Art of Happiness" by the Dalai Lama. He suggests an exercise for us to gain a better perspective on our lives. Finish the question "I'm glad I'm not a ____." Do it five times and suddenly your own life and all its difficult circumstances seem positively wonderful!
Also, I want to note that I have my own struggles keeping perspective and that's why I'm working on an attitude change as part of my BFL challenge.

Hard was.... every month every day saying oh I am gonna work out. I am gonna get that hard ripped body I want. Every other day self loathing myself. ANd saying oh I'll start next week working out and NEVER doing it.
And one day riding a horse getting catapulted into a jump and putting my arm out to brace my fall I snapped my arm out at the elbow. Dislocating it and shearing off the radial heads. I was told I needed surgery and that I would never be able to move my arm again. I would lose most of my range of motion if not all.
Hard was... realizing at that moment I had lived 30 years of my life healthy and not disabled saying I was going to get in shape and in 1 day I almost lost my right arm. That was HARD!
You know the ret of the story! ;-)

Count your blessings, I mean it, count you blessing and you lucky stars every day, When you think of the hard times some people go through , BFL is a luxuary that we have an easy way to use or.
As a Foster parent for 15 years, and keeping children in your home for long periods of time, raising then as your own and loving then for 1 or 2 or 3 yrs and then the DHS department notifies you a day or two in advance that the child is going home, it's the most heartbreaking thing that can happen to an emotional heart. Like When we got Dale at 10 months old, beaten and half dead, with 4 fractures of the skull, brusies and broken ribs, we care for him, we loved him, every day we had him make us closer and closer to hime and make us love him move. he new no other parents, we were all he new, then after 7 yreas the DHS office called on a Friday and said they were going to court on Monday and was not going to to fight the case. they felt the mother was doing ok, was not the one that beat him , the boyfrined was arrested and in jail after yrs of trying to find him the mother was re married for the 3rd time and doing well with 5 other children. we were more then devestated, it was the end of our world, we were told that we were only waiting for the release papers to termanated the mothers rights and we were going to adopt hi, they gave us 4 months to prepare himm to meet and visit with his real mother until they drove away with our baby boy. Now that's HARD!
We cried ourselfes silly, ale is my baby, I'll always love him and one day I know God will let him come back into my life. and I'll be here with open arms!

Yeah, Venus is a goddess of something. I was also thinking of the song...
"She's GOT IT!! Yeah baby, she's got it!"
Oh... and they'll notice! I embarrassed to have even taken the picture on my digital where no one but me would see it! I had to delete it fast and hope there was no way to accidentally undelete it. LMAO!
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (1715 posts) at 12:41 PM
LMAO....I don't think it can be undeleted once you delete it :D Someday though I bet you will be posting a naked back pic girl :D
Now I got the song stuck in my head...LMAO....She's GOT IT!!! Yeah baaaaby she's got it....I'm your Venus...I'm your fire...your desire ...

Hah, Jess! I've thought the same thing about myself. Just tape those wild things together (who's gonna know?).
Goddessa -- I'm gonna try it. With any luck, I won't pull something in my back or cause an aneurism.
I'm already working on tossing myself down the stairs by wrenching my neck around to see whether my calves are developing when I'm climbing the floors to our apartment.

So today my dog's trainer at Petsmart sent me an IM to tell me he's giving me a discount coupon today. While we "chatted" the subject of working out came up, and he asked me what I do. I told him I do high intensity intervals 3 times a week, and weight lifting 3 times a week, but didn't go into details just yet. He said he wants to lift weights but doesn't know how or even how to start. So I told him about the BFL book and how I lift, and then knowing he was diagnosed with diabetes a couple of months ago, I told him about EFL too, and how I was sure his MD would approve (but that he needed to clear it with her first). He said he'd noticed the last time I was in that I had lost a LOT of weight and had a "glow" about me, but he didn't say anything then because he didn't want to embarrass me. How nice is that?
Anyway, by the end of the conversation, he had decided to go next door to Barnes and Noble at lunch and get both books, and he said that I had gotten him all excited about it, and seeing my results is proof enough to him that it works.
Then he went slightly into the discomfort zone by telling me I was breaking hearts every minute and there were probably a lot of guys checking me out that I didn't even notice, lol. I know it was a compliment, but he's recently divorced and started dating and I'm not interested in him in that way... whether he meant it that way or not! LOL
I swear, one person at a time, we are going to change the WORLD!

OMG! I’m so excited. I went shopping for a bathing suit (still not an enjoyable experience) but while looking in the 3 way mirror, I noticed how much slimmer my back is. Missing, gone for good is that ugly a$$ bra fat. I’m not toned, but I’m not bulging either.
This is a good day!
Do you have a Woo Hoo for the day? Please share.
Body for Life Forum Message by WeCanDoIt (167 posts) at 01:21 PM
WOOHOO chris p!!
I tried on bathing suits last night too to track my progress since my goal is to wear a bathing suit in public...Well, I'm close!! I was very excited! I just need to work on my saddlebags...if I want to wear a bikini I really need to work on my abs too.
ANYWAY! MY WOOHOO for the day...last night I bought myself size 3/4 denim capris! YEAH BABY! Size 3/4!! And they were on sale!!
WOOHOO!!!

I've been really worried about travelling next week. I have a conference in Vermont for my company that I have to help run and managing my meals is going to be very difficult. I then found out that the gym doesn't open until 6:30am and I have to be at work at 7:00!! They close by 9:30 and I'll still be working. I was pretty upset about it.
We, myself and one other fitness buff who is also a meeting planner, asked the hotel if they would open an hour early for those of us that have to work all day. They said it would be $30 extra a day to open at 5:30am, well, I we were hardly ready to pay that sort of money out of pocket. But, we decided to ask our bosses if they would consider having the company pay and they agreed!!! I couldn't even believe it. :-)
So Yay!! I will be able to get my workouts in at 5:30 am while I'm on business travel. I'm really happy about that.
Just wanted to share the good vibes!!!

We have some people on vacation or who are going to turn in stats still. I will add their points later, of course they don't get the full 17 (2 for missing the posting date) or more if they are not doing their plan. Or we may have to use a subs stats.
So these numbers could change.
Week 6 results
You can probably assume Bod Squad and Get Her Done to get another 12 to 15 points based on prior averages.
We are nearing the end - EVERYBODY HANG IN THERE!!!

Hi guys!
Just got back from the gym a few minutes ago...
I was doing one-arm curls and noticed in the mirror that my legs sure looked better than even just a few weeks ago...
"Wow, Jim! Those look like the legs of an athlete!"
Then a little voice muttered "Uh...Jim...that's because they ARE!"
Talk about a nice little wake-up call! And it sure is nice to not have to depend on others for compliments! (Yuk! Yuk!)
Sometimes when we don't see dramatic changes on a weekly or even monthly basis, it is so easy to think that you are not making progress...but you stay the course anyway... and then BAM! You get a nice little wake-up call like I did today!
That'll sure put a gallon or 2 into your emotional gas tank!
Have you guys had some experiences like this lately?
Jim

I got delayed and didn't get to meal five until about 7:30, that put 4 hours between meal 4 and 5. I go to bed around 10. Should I try to fit meal six in at 9:30? I was thinking protein powder drink and some grapes would not be too bad.
thoughts?
Thanks, Shannon

I mentioned that same question yesterday in a reply post. Basically everyone told me that it is A-OK to eat 5 minutes before you go to bed. The body needs the fuel for all the work we are doing. I am planning on getting ready for bed in about 30 minutes and I just downed a protein powder drink.

Sorry for the sour-puss face, I'm having such a tough week emotionally. But I wanted to get my week 8 picture up to keep my motivated. I don't see any difference between my week 4 and week 8 picture. As a matter of fact, I think I look a little more toned in my week 4 picture. I'm sure it has to do with my nutrition. I haven't been as disciplined as I once was.
Well, time to kick it up a notch!
Have a great night, Musiq.

Hey Musiq,
I kind of felt the same way when I posted my 8 week pictures. I felt like I had pretty good progress up to my 4th week. Then I coasted up to the 8th week. But don't get discouraged, get determined!!! Make some new goals and maybe look at some new supplements to get you going for the next 4 weeks.
Your body fat is down quite a bit from the 4 week mark, and that is one of your goals...to lower your body fat. So stay focused, you are not far from your goals.

Turn your camera 90 degrees and fill the frame with your body. That way you will see more of you, and less of the walls. THEN, I think you will be able to see the changes better.

Girl, I haven't looked at your pic yet but wanted to say that I SO relate!! I had a solid first 3 weeks then something happened and my nutrition slipped. you already look good and I think it is easy to get comfortable in the fact that you are doing well and you let things slide, I know that was the case for me. Once I finished week 8 I made a promise to myself that I would finish these last 4 weeks strong, and I am doing it. You know that you look good now, but you also know what you WANT to look like so keep it up girl, you CAN DO THIS!!!! DOn't let this be another time that you don't achieve what you know you can achieve.

I typically get 3-4 hours of sleep at night because I have two little boys who are TERRIBLE sleepers. (I'm not exaggerating when I say my 2-year old has the worst sleep disorder his pediatrician has ever seen...) All that to say...
some days I am so exhausted that I cannot even think about doing my weight workout. As is the case tonight. What would you do? Go to sleep, or force yourself to train? I really need advice on this one...
Body for Life Forum Message by Coco (349 posts) at 09:12 PM
go to sleep! i can't imagine getting that little rest. your body needs time to rest and repair. i don't see how you'd even have energy to make it through the workout, muchless hit tens. sweet dreams!

You really need to get the best quality of sleep in the best (longest) stretch that you can.
Cortisol is the fat culprit that comes from lack of sleep. That's that fat that accumulates around the middle.
Best thoughts on this are to get the whole family sleeping properly and well and then work/plan your exercise sometime in the day. I know it can/will be tough. I believe it is all rooted in our circadian rythms. I'll see if I can find the website.
Body for Life Forum Message by dough (93 posts) at 10:35 PM
Everyone is absolutely right. Listen to your body, and yours is screaming for rest.
This morning I opened my eyes at about 6am, as usual. I normally get up and go for a run. Next thing I knew, it was 7am. I didn't regret missing my run, because I knew the rest was needed more, and I average three more hours of sleep per night than you.

This is not exactly a BFL support discussion, rather a plea for sensibility.
While out running on the street this morning on a main road near my house (three lanes total with wide shoulders), I was doing everything the way a pedestrian is supposed, i.e., running on the left side facing traffic, and keeping a close eye on approaching vehicles.
As I came to a side street from a residential area, I noticed a small car coming to the intersection. Red flags pop up in my mind immediately, because the driver, a man taking his kids to school, was at to the corner and going much too fast to stop at the stop sign. He was already in the process of make a right-hand turn right into me! All of his attention was directed to check for any on-coming traffic, so he was looking away from me.
Since there was no traffic to interfere with him continuing on his route, he didn't slow down, and I was directly in his path! I had to side-step quickly to the right in order to avoid getting run over, and as I did, I slammed my left hand down on his hood. That was his first inkling that something was amiss, and he slammed on his brakes. My guess is he had to go back home to clean up. :-)
I don't know about where you live, but here in Utah, stop signs seem to be just colorful decorations at street corners; they are largely ignored. People that do stop usually don't stop until they are past the stop sign and into the intersection.
So, a long story to implore everyone to drive correctly and expect the unexpected. Look for the unordinary to occur. Save a life, maybe mine. ;-)

I agree, people don't look right when making a right-hand turn, they only look left or straight ahead. I've also had to slam my hand onto the hood of a car!! It sure gets their attention.

The rule is : LOOK left, right, left, people. I do it again for good measure. I actually stop AT THE STOP line (here in BC they are right there at the Stop sign for major streets) then I inch forward. I hear what you're saying - people lurch to something that resembles a stop AFTER the sign and continue if there is nothing to challenge them! Drivers take care and pedestrians BEWARE!

Really having troubles with the "weekend thing". Do really well with the program for 4 days - it all falls apart on the weekend. Like to have a drink with hubby, then get together with friends on weekends for suppers/drinks. I'm bad, in that when I fall off the wagon, it tends to be a free for all..... 'cause I can always get back on track "TOMORROW" (although 'tomorrow tends to be 3 days worth). Monday comes along and I feel guilty and totally unhappy with myself. HOW DO YOU ALL HANDLE SOCIAL SITUATIONS? Please give me some feedback. I've got BBQ on Sat. so that will be free day - really looking for support to make this my FIRST clean week - only 1 CHEAT DAY! Thanks

You can do whatever type of cardio is possible. Just do it according to the HIIT method. Step cardio is great!

Mix up your cardio (low intensity for a longer duration/high intensity as well). Good luck to ya!
Body for Life Forum Message by khubbard (177 posts) at 08:54 AM
Here's mine Supafreak.
1. You have got to look in the mirror and truly commit the next 12 weeks of your life to BFL (nothing good comes easy). If you want good results then cheat on your cheat day and have that piece of b-day cake on that non-cheat day. You'll still lose weight and improve, but do you want good results or great results? It's all in what you want.
2. Eat clean and hammer the H20 (protein shakes, fat free cottage cheese, egg beaters, fish , chicken, veggies, brown rice, wheat pasta).
3. Morning Cardio Morning cardio Morning Cardio to burn more fat and get that metabolism going for the rest of the day.
4. Hit 10's. Easier said than done. You should be shaking/sweating/ but wierd as it may sound . . . when you push your body to its limits soon after you'll be smiling. B/c you'll know your building a better you (inside and in the mirror).
5. Feed the beast. Proper supplementation. Mine was Myoplex everyday. A six week creatine cycle (weeks 5-9). Glutamine/Vitamin C everyday. I also used EAS Precision protein towards the end of the challenge to cut carbs.
plus one more . . . REST REST REST when needed!!!!!

Hello, my name is Stewy and I have been doing BFL (sort of) since January. I had to have foot surgery in Feb. so I just started over April 10th. I thought I was doing pretty good, my clothes were fitting better and bigger. Then I went to the Doctor yesterday for a check up and the weight was not good, so this morning at the gym I had my body fat measured and it was not good either. It was up from April's, not a lot but some. So I am going to start posting my eating and workouts and if you have any feed back I would appriciate it. Thanks to everyone.
Body for Life Forum Message by Mofroggy (55 posts) at 04:42 PM
you can do it, stewy! This is the place to get that support!! post away! :)
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3130 posts) at 04:50 PM
If your clothes are fitting better and getting bigger, you are doing something wrong! If you didn't weigh yourself originally on your doctor's scale, you cannot compare your weight to that from your doctor's scale. And if the same person did not measure your body fat both times, or even if they did, it's very possible that they got an inaccurate reading one or both times.
I say use your clothes and how you feel as a guage, and keep doing what you're doing! :)

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3130 posts) at 04:54 PM
I only see 5 meals.... but they look good! It's pretty important to try and get that 6th meal in. It looks like you're going 5 hours between meals in the middle of the day. You should try to eat ever 2-3 hours while you are awake, and that will help you get all 6 meals in. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by jenn4289 (12 posts) at 08:19 PM
Okay, new to the program and I don't understand how to find out how much muscle you have gained, and how much fat is lost when all is said and done. Is there a formula to this? (obviously I have a long way to go, but like to know what to look forward to!)
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3130 posts) at 08:46 PM
You need to get your bodyfat measured first. There are a lot of ways to do it with varying degrees of accuracy, and none of them exact, but pick one and stick with it and watch for the trend. A lot of people use MyBodyComp, which calculates your bf% based on your body measurements. Again, likely not the most accurate, but it's a way to watch for a trend.
Once you have a body fat percentage, you will know what part of your total weight is fat. The rest of your weight, then, is lean mass. BUT... lean mass is not just muscle. It's also water, bones, blood, everything that isn't fat. So, you'll have an estimate how much of you is fat and how much is lean mass, and as that lean mass number increases and the fat number goes down, you'll have a general idea how much muscle you've gained.
Body for Life Forum Message by kewlmum5 (155 posts) at 09:27 PM
Hey Jenn, bfl tracker does the work for you. But you have to take measurements and track your bf% for it to do it. Once you have a coupl eof weeks filled in, when you look at your profile, above the weekly progress part will be aparagraph which details how much change you had in body fat and muscle gain. Take a look at soemone else's profile (mine if you like) who has been on the plan for a little while and you will see what i mean.

This thread was very imformative!
Body for Life Forum Message by BabeBy40 (333 posts) at 09:49 AM
Are they necessary? Or, do you think Bill suggested them in his book just because he wanted to get into the business (EAS)?
Lisa
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (159 posts) at 09:58 AM
Neither are necessary unless you are doing the offical competition. Shakes are good for convience reasons. If you can eat 6 whole food meals a day...great! Bars are not recomended unless you are in a pinch and cannot eat anything else.
But yes I think Bill recommended them to make some money. I cant blame him, thats his job. That doesnt mean that they are not good for you or will inhibit your getting in shape. The shakes are really good for you when you cant make 6 meals a day with whole food.
Body for Life Forum Message by NaturalPhysiques (207 posts) at 11:31 AM
No, definitely not necessary expect for the rules of the competition. You'll actually experience your best results losing fat/gaining muscle eating as much whole foods as possible.
They are great for convenience (i.e. on the road, travel, etc) or when you need to satisfy a sweet tooth.
I don't think Bill wanted to get into the EAS business, as he already was in it when he wrote the book. He was just cross-promoting. I don't recally him ever saying they were necessary in the book, only that they were convenient.
Jeremy
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3130 posts) at 04:13 PM
On eatingforlife.com, he specifically says they are not necessary. They are for convenience, that's it.
Body for Life Forum Message by BabeBy40 (333 posts) at 04:39 PM
Anyone eat or drink them because they enjoy the taste? If so, what do you consider the best bar or shake?
I personally like the EAS Advant Edge Iced Oatmeal Raison Crisp & the other two Crisp bars for a couple of reasons. 1. They have lower fat compared to the other EAS/BFL bars (4.5g compared to 6, 7, or 8), 2. They are "bigger" than most other bars and 3. My grocery store carries them consistently at under $1, while most of the others are way more expensive. I usually only eat bars when I am out and about and can't eat a normal meal.
In terms of shakes, I liked the Myoplex Lite Vanilla. I have also bought the EAS Advant Edge Smoothie Lite. I pour the raspberry flavor into a ziplock and put it in the freezer. Every half hour or so, I squish it up a little so that it doesn't freeze solid. After a few hours, I have a great "milkshake" or "Blizzard"-like treat.
Lisa
Body for Life Forum Message by TNT's-MOM (165 posts) at 04:54 PM
So are the smoothie lite's ok??? I like them but the person @ GNC told me they were too high in sugar? I just can't choke down the rtd things...like the chocolate drinks...the ones with coffee are ok...I like the lite bars. I have to use them can't very well tell my boss excuse me while I go to the kitchen and fix my 2nd and 4th meals!!! Sometimes I can eat apple and string cheese or cottage cheese sometimes yogurt and cottage cheese at the desk but unfortunatly it is mostly bars and drinks they don't get as much unwanted attention as real food if you know what I mean..I think Bill uses the bars and shakes alot if you look at his eating plan so if he can look that good doing the shake and bar thing guess it won't hurt me either...
