wouldn't it just be easier to get a colonoscopy? lol! That stuff they have you drink does the job pretty darn well!

I read a bit, will go back and read some more. Still a bit of a skeptic with the heads, antenae, scales though. Why would we not have heard of these little cutie pies living in us before?
I had the water colonic done years ago. What really stands out in my mind was that the saliva in my mouth was different for a few days. It felt like running water instead of actual saliva; like clean spring water - weird. And yes my stomach didn't seem as puffy. The girl that performed it said her regular clients were marathon runners and a person just starting out should have a series of them. This was over 10 years ago and I think it was $45 a shot; she recommended 8.
Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (42 posts) at 09:38 AM
Here in the Kansas City area they range from 50-60 dollars each.
It's better than a colonoscopy because it flushes you out with I think 10 gallons of water and pretty much cleans you out. They say that the stuff you drink doesn't do as well. I'll try it.

Please keep me posted!

I talked to my husband about doing this last night and he is a bit skeptical and has also made me a little too...does anybody know exactly how this stuff is working? I mean what kind of toxins are in the cleanser to get "parasites" out??
A colonoscopy is definitely NOT any easier and its about $2000 more dollars!! Plus I felt terrible for a week after taking all that medicine.
If anyone truly knows how this is actually working in the body I would be interested in hearing the facts. I know its fiber and all that stuff but I take fiber and milk of mag every AM and PM, so what does it have thats dif from all that??? HOpe someone knows:)

Lori - are you doing the water one or the one where you provided the website - I think it was called Colonix?????
Body for Life Forum Message by reneakleinisakson (198 posts) at 02:54 PM
How does the stuff you buy online differ from having a "porcedure" done? Years ago a coworker and I tried some of those "colon cleanser" pills. If I recall correctly, we both "felt the urge" more often and it was sort of an "immediate need" type of thing, but I don't think either of us saw anything out of the ordinary. At least I didn't.
Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (42 posts) at 03:08 PM
There is stuff you can buy that you drink and it flushes you out. I am doing the one where they put the tube in "there" and flush 10 gallons of water in you and let all the "stuff' come out. Sounds like an experience. It's called hydrocolonic therapy.
Lori
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1062 posts) at 03:14 PM
Lori - how many procedures are you having? When I did it, I was told it took several to get it all. I only did one and she said that was just "loosening" it a bit - there was much more to come but it would have to be a series of them for it all to come out. I found it expensive. If the one you initially wrote about works, it would be far more cost effective, JMO.

This is my first week and I think I need help.
I went to teh gym two days ago for my upper body and at first I felt like I was doing it wrong but as I progressed I was more confident about my exercise. It began to feel like the 10 he stated it should feel like in the BFL book. But, today when I went to do my lower body I had problems.
I got on the leg press machine and all was good. It felt right, but when I got onto they lying leg curl machine I couldn't do it the way he said in the book. I can not make my foot touch my bottom without the machine so I obviously could not bring it up all the way on the machine. Now I did not quit and finished the sets. I am worried I may have caused more harm than good by not exercising my muscle correctly.
Second, I went to the standing calf raise machine. There was no weight to adjust. I just did the reps as listed without adjusting any weight. I know I got a good workout on that part because I hit a definite 10 by the end. But how do we adjust weight here. I am not sure if I can take more weight than the resistance given by the machine right now.
Third, I wanted to do crunches (huge tummy to get rid of). Again no way to adjust weight (that I saw). But when I was lying on the floor I did noticed a crunch "machine" with weights on it. Does that help or hinder the process?
I am a bit confused by what I need to do to max my results.
Thanks for any help.
Monica

Here's my 2 bits:
Lying leg curls - do what you're doing, sounds like you've just got some flexibility issues (as I do). You're still working the hamstrings, but try to go as far up as you can and maybe do some stretching before you begin your workout. I'm a big burly guy and it hurts to admit this, but I've tried Yoga and although I haven't stuck with it very well, it did WONDERS for my flexibility.
Calf raise machine - I've not seen one of those, but if you find a platform (most gyms have one - maybe a little homemade thing on the floor) to put your toes on (so your heels are off the floor), then you can do weighted calf raises with dumbells in your hands or a barbell across your shoulders (like when doing squats). I like to use a Smith Machine for mine.
Crunches - you can do as many as you can until you feel the burn, or you can put a plate (weight) on your chest to add weight. I use the weighted "crunch machine" sometimes, but many on here have said that they felt it didn't work very well.
Good luck!

Body for Life Forum Message by gp800mark (385 posts) at 09:15 AM
Leg Curls - ask someone to assist you in bringing the weight(gently) all the way up, let it down slowly, repeat until you gain enough strengh/flexibility to do it on your own. You will be amazed how willing others are to help if you ask.
Calf raise machine. It probably has bars sticking out the side or in front to add plates.
Let me know if this makes sense. Have a great day!

Body for Life Forum Message by positiveimage (17 posts) at 10:42 AM
when i started 2 weeks a go i couldn't do the standing or lying leg curls, period. maybe 7 or 8 at a time, so i switched to other exercise listed in the program. So for it's been good. i will go back to leg curls once i have enough muscle strength.
AB Boot Camp, thing to go for.
Calf raise machine - have a trainer help you out at the gym. Free of charge if you to gym.

I don't know how tall you are, but one of the problems I have is that my legs are too short to use the leg curl machine properly. If I scootch down far enough on the bench to reach the pads with my legs straight, by the time I curl my legs the pad has rolled off my heals and I'm trying to hold it with my feet - I gave up on that machine and I do straight leg deadlifts instead - I feel like I spend a lot less time struggling and more time working.
Body for Life Forum Message by positiveimage (17 posts) at 10:49 AM
I didn't mean the training session - but help with the machines.
Body for Life Forum Message by harvestmeadow (20 posts) at 11:00 AM
gp800mark it does have bars, I thought the machine looked rather funny. Thanks.
I will check out the link to the ab bootcamp, thanks.
PTM, I am short, only 5'2" so it rolls off me too. But I was down all the way (where it started almost at my knees) and still couldn't get it to my hiney. I think I will try the idea to do the lifts with dumbells. I am with you on spending more time struggling. I felt that way too.
Thank you all, You are so wonderful for the advice. I am so glad I joined this group.
Monica
Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (675 posts) at 11:31 AM
I am 5'1" and have problems using even the most sophisticated lying leg curl machine. Even when adjusted for really short people, I don't ever feel comfortable doing them. If I'm all the way down, the bend in the pads hits me at the wrong spot AND my hands can't grip the handles up top. My inseam is around 28" so my legs are midget sized! I gave up and if I really want to leg curls to work the hammies, I'll do the standing leg curl machine, although I don't really enjoy it much. I prefer straight legged deadlifts for the hamstrings out all the exercises.

I was reading another thread and I noticed that someone had asked a question about a platau. I saw that rice/pasta type carbs were not good. So should I keep track of calories and what carbs I eat? I am really careful about portion size (except when I am full and don't take the last couple of bites).
I hate to sound dumb in this but I see such great results in most people on here (especially the larger ones) and I want to be one of them.

Whole wheat pasta and brown rice are good carbs. Stick to the proper portion and you're all set. Some people try to taper them off later in the day but there's no rule.

In our relationship, I am the one whose has changed dramatically, physically and mentally. I haven't been in shape since my wife and I have been together(12 years) and she has always been extremely physically fit.
I have to watch myself in the jealousy department. I started going to the gym and saw what kind of attention she received from various other members(men) she works out with. There are not many females that work out at her level. They basically kiss her butt - hand her weights, set up machines, spot her when its not necessary, etc. Some of the act like she is their pet project. I am sure it is realatively innocent, but I have never witnessed this first hand.
Maybe he is jealous and just needs some reasurance that you are changing for the better, not pulling away.
Hope this lends some insight into the mind of a man. Have a great day!
Body for Life Forum Message by julesboston (40 posts) at 10:00 AM
Hi Flower, I'm sorry you're going through this. Regardless of anything, I think it's imperative that you sit down with him and talk about how you're feeling. We tend to have certain expectations and when they're not met, we get frustrated. If he knows what you want/need from him, he can (hopefully) try and comply. If he chooses not to, then you know he's not capable of being there in the way you need him to. I've been with my BF for 15 months. We've lived together for almost a year now. I've definitely gained a good 25 lbs since then. I feel horrible about how I look and have told him that. He knows , however, he doesn't ever critique me when I don't get up to go to the gym or order something at a restaurant I probably shouldn't have. He knows I'm an adult and I'm aware of my situation. He tells me he loves me no matter what and will support me however I need him to. I told him I need him to just believe in me - and that's what I'm getting. I'm hard enough on myself - I don't need anyone else pointing out the obvious.
Communication is the key to every healthy relationship and you should never have to wonder where he's "at." Just ask! Good luck to you :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1062 posts) at 10:28 AM
Hmmm, how does one sort through all this (what has been posted). No problems talking at all, its arguing WHILE talking that has become an issue. I see one way, he the other. As far as being supportive, he has ALWAYS, alawys told me how attractive I am to him no matter what I've looked like, almost to the point of being relentless. This has gone on for years so he gets good points for putting in all that effort for giving good lip service. Perhaps I've become less attractive now that I've become "obsessed" with how I look? And quite honestly I'm getting sick & tired of hearing this "obsessed" thing. Its the way I know how to do things. What should I do? Stop? Somehow that will make me a better person? How so? As you can see, I'm frustrated. My obsessiveness is exagerated by him as well, don't even have the energy to argue it anymore.
I think all of us can be somewhat guilty of taking the other for granted at some point or other. It seems things have gotten to a point where you just say f*** it, who cares. Many arguements go unresolved; resolution has obviously become difficult for us. As well, going back on your word or promises makes it seem like you don't care. We never ever argue about important things, only stupid things. This stupidity has become a battle of wills - so far no winner yet. It wears me down at times. Like I said before, I need to find the key or the secret answer to this. Breaking up will do what? We love each other, tear our family up, hurt the girls? We both move on to yet another relationship only to do it all over again.
I am starting to really believe men and women are different (duh). Just ask a man when he's being a total idiot "do you really want me to think blah, blah, blah"? He'll say no of course not; so then why do that or say that? Any men have an answer to that?
Anybody getting the feeling this thread should have been titled "Dear Ann Landers"?
Body for Life Forum Message by dottingmyeyes (14 posts) at 10:55 AM
Hey Flower,
I am new here but not new to relationship woes, that is for sure! :)
Anyway, I just read through your last post and my thought was, have you ever tried saying to him what you just said here (about how you two have stopped resolving arguments, etc.)?
I can tell that you still love him. If you want to try to improve the relationship, I think that you really need to get this out there in the open. When you don't talk about stuff like this, resentment builds and that is bad for the relationship.
Hopefully if you have an open and honest discussion about where you are and what is bothering you, you two can start trying to focus on SOLUTIONS. Because I haven't seen anything in your post that sounds unresolvable.
Btw, I really liked jamber's approach - to try to focus on the positives. In fact, I think that is a great way to open up this discussion - say to him, I love you, and these are the things that I really treasure in you and our relationship ____ . . . however I think we would both be a lot happier if we worked together to learn how to resolve conflicts, etc. - and go from there.

Men and women are different.
I once read a fantasic book which really put it into perspective for me, titled " Why Men are the way they are"
I think Men are geared to try to be problem solvers- leaving the emotional compenent in the background. Whereas women perhaps may not necessarily be looking for the solution, but just want to have their feelings/perspective acknowledged and validated.
If you can find it... is would be a GREAT book to read.
Yours in Health,
Kerry

I went to their concert at age 15 and managed to get to the front row, where I hit John Taylor (my fav) right in the crotch w/a stuffed animal. He looked right at me! I also loved Paul Young (Brit singer). At his concert (same year I think) also wormed my way to the front row and he knelt down during "Every Time You Go Away" and kissed me on the LIPS! I almost fainted and girls were screaming! As an adult I laugh, since technically he could be arrested for doing that to a minor!! LOL!! But, I forgive him ;)

Well if we're going way back now............I always thought James Dean was so sexy, as a teen I had a crush on a dead guy!
I never got the Shawn Cassidy hoopla tho, what did anyone see in him? Seemed so wimpy, even his hair was wimpy LOL. Sorry, don't get it. Where is he now?????
Sebastian Bach was a cutie too, that hair! I'd love to brush it.

Flower Speaking of crushes on dead guys - my 11 year old daughter has a HUGE crush on Elvis. She has an elvis t-shirt and notebook and CD's. She can sing by heart everyone of his songs. She's been to graceland... (and we live in California) Even _I_ never crushed anyone that hard.
Charlie - I always thought Loni was amazing - she's still really beautiful isn't she?
annie - those 'my three sons' boys were CUTE. Even in re-runs. :)

deadstick: I think you mean "Who's the Boss" if you are talking about Alyssa Milano. And although I'm a heterosexual woman, I adore that girl! She's become quite the hot chick, even with the breast implants (I usually can't stand the way implants look). She went from a cutie pie Samantha Micelli to hot Phoebe on Charmed!
I remember a few years back, when she cut all her hair off (really , really short), I grabbed a pic of her new 'do and had my done just like it. She's one of the few women I know that can look THAT hot with that little of hair!

Tonia and Kelly are amazing. Kelly is a member of the BFL club I run, so Tonia met up with her there. They hit it off and have been friends ever since.
Buffy - Kelly has done I think 3 or 4 figure comps and she trophied in all of them - so she trained Tonia for her first one and is still mentoring Tonia.
Lori - Tonia will be competing in the Kansas City Gold's Classic Sept 17th come check it out. E-mail me and I can get you more info if you like and maybe we can all touch bases at the show, Kelly might be there as well though not competing. I will be starting a fitness consulting business as well with program design in Sept so if you see the show and decide to go down that road we can talk about that as well.
Jess - I been a lurker here for a long time. I scan the profiles to simply look at transformations in work, keeps me inspired and focused on wanting to make a difference.
Maegan - believe it or not most of them use Pam Cooking Spray if memory serves me correctly. I'll double check that.
cfingram - I looked at your pics and read your posts on the topic and that is what prompted me to register and post the links. You and a few others want to head down this road, So I thought I would show 2 BFLers who have done it and are doing it!
Kelly did it, Tonia did it and now you, Lori and anybody else who wants to chart this course can do it.
- Jim

I sometimes wonder about the world we live in...I watched a Nightline special last night on the disasterous famine in Niger...800,000 children will most likely die if something is not done soon...and that is just the children, what of the adults. We live in a world where I find it unacceptable that anyone can and will starve to death. I can't shake the images of these dying children, and everywhere I look, I have everything. How dare I complain that I have "nothing" in my house to eat. I have been devastated by this special, and am at a loss as what to do. I know that I am only one person, but I have to believe that one person CAN make a difference.

Body for Life Forum Message by Moggie (61 posts) at 11:44 PM
I didn't see the program you watched but became very aware of the crisis there while I was watching that Live 8 concert on TV a while back. They had these commercials in between the performances that showed various people snapping their fingers. It was to demonstrate that everytime they snapped another child died in Africa. My kids watched part of it with me and they decided that they wanted to give up one restaurant outing a month so that we could sponsor a child in Africa. Sometimes my kids make me so very proud.

I LOVE that stuff!!!! It gives a GREAT color without any dark spots/streaking/spotches like most self tanners do. And I don't have to take hours to carefully put it on. Just slather daily and go. My legs look great and they have a nice light brown color to them. No wonder I can never find the damn stuff on the shelves. You know how I finally got a hold of a tube? I went to Walmart in the middle of the night and they happened to be stocking a new supply of the tubes. I snatched up 2 of them and ran home. 4 days later and I look like I've been hitting the beach but without it being overkill. Just a nice, healthy
"glow" (hmmm...wonder how they came up with the name Jergen's Natural Glow?).
For anyone who is fairly light and doesn't want to do the self tanners or is hesitant to, try this stuff. It's terrific!

Been using for months...it is good stuff just like putting on lotion I have had some rub off on a towel but no biggie it didn't streak..My sister in law that is a nurse told me that some of the self tanners are made from the chemicals that they used to clean the dialysis (sp?) machines with..she said man you splash some of that on you you had a nice brown spot for awhile...she said if you got it on your nails they would turn brown so someone got the bright idea to dilute it way down and put it in lotion as a self tanner they knew it would turn the skin brown...not sure if this is true but my sister in law works for a plastic surgeon so she gets the inside scoop on this cosmetic stuff.

So I was at the grocery store tonight just picking up some bottled water and some snack bars/meal replacement bars, which ever way you want to call them. As the cashier is running my products over the scanner, she asked if I was trying to lose weight. Instead of giving her the polite, boring answer of "Yup" (the kind of answer that I give WAY too often) I told her "I'm not trying, I AM losing weight. I've lost 40 pounds since February". She asked what I was doing and when I told her BFL she started asking questions about it. The next thing I knew, she had both of the cashiers on either side of her involved and asking questions, and two other people in line were involved as well. It was like a mini-meeting had broke out in the check-out lines of my grocery store and I was the ring leader. I even broke out my camera phone and showed them my 'before' picture. So as I left, I had five people all excited and ready to run out and buy the BFL book.

I would suggest you don't force yourself to eat everything at once. Part of my problem (and a lot of other people) is that we tend to eat until we are stuffed.
If you can keep the portions and total amount of food for the day within your plan, I don't see why you can't have the fruit an hour later.
Furthermore, fruit is too important to skip.
Hope this helps, Diane

So I've been reading trying to figure out what carbs are best to eat when and I've gotten myself totally confused.
I get that starchy carbs are your breads, barley, pasta and potatoes, generally speaking.
I also saw that fibrous carbs are green veggies -- though I'm not sure what ones really.
But where do fruits come into the picture? They aren't simple carbs are they???
Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (127 posts) at 12:02 PM
Fruits are simple they usual convert to sugar.
Correct on the startchy
Mostly All veggies are fibrous. I believe.
Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (238 posts) at 12:04 PM
I found this on the EAS Forum:
http://forum.eas-sa.com/showthread.php?t=4998
Examples of good starchy carbs (oatmeal, potatoes, sweet potatoes, brown rice, 100% whole grain dry cereals, 100% whole wheat or whole grain pasta, 100% whole wheat bread & whole grain products)
Examples of good fibrous carbs(Asparagus, broccoli, green beans, lettuce, tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms, squash, peas, carrots, cauliflower …)
You can bring in your simple carbs(fruit and dairy) with meal 1 and 2 (reducing the serving of starchy carbs) if you want.
And there's a REALLY long and indepth article on carbs here:

MMMMM - I love rhubarb! My grandma used to make pies in the summer.
Well rhubarb goes great with strawberry so you could probably make a strawberry protein shake with fresh rhubarb in it or you could add chopped strawberries and rhubarb to cottage cheese with some splenda....MMMM
Body for Life Forum Message by reneakleinisakson (198 posts) at 12:09 PM
I was thinking about combining frozen rhubarb (chopped up) with some fat free cream cheese and cottage cheese. Not sure if it sounds good or not though. I would definetly have to add some splenda!!
Body for Life Forum Message by dndoty (83 posts) at 12:14 PM
Actually sounds really good - I'm not sure how good/bad cream cheese is for you, but I'm sure its not too bad. You know - something with hot rhubarb might be good too...like mixing it in oatmeal!

Eggplant Lasagna
I've made this a few times & love it. Once I ate the entire pan on free day. I was so sick I haven't made it since but it is absolutely delicious - I almost prefer it to pasta lasagna.
2 small or 1 large eggplant
2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. olive oil
4 cloves garlic minced
1 tsp. fennel seeds
1 lb. lean ground turkey
1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes
1 - 26 oz. or 3 cups tomato or marinara sauce (I make my own out of canned tomatoes so use whatever you like)
1 1/2 c fat free ricotta (I use light)
4 oz. shredded fat free mozzarella
1/4 c egg whites
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tbsp. whole wheat bread crumbs
2 tbsp. low fat parmesan
Slice eggplant in thin slices cross wise. Lay on paper towels & sprinkle with salt both sides turning once as you let them sweat - sponge off excess moisture. Heat oil w/garlic (I don't use the oil), add gr. turkey, fennel, red pepper flakes. Cook til done then add marinara or tomato sauce. Preheat oven to 350, spray 9 X 13 pan with non stick. Combine ricotta, mozza, egg whites & nutmeg. Make sure moisture is sponged off eggplant. Sprinkle bottom of ban w/bread crumbs. Lay 1/3 of eggplant in pan, spoon 1/3 sauce mixture, then 1/3 cheese mixture, sprinkle w/ 1 tsp. bread crumbs. Repeat then top w/ parmesan. Bake til bubbling about 50 mins.
This is approximate:
CAL 317
PROT 32 G
CARB 14 G
FAT 15 G
I don't know how authorized this is but its not too bad and is absolutely delicious. Let me know how it turns out for you!

My dog is a real good motivator. She knows that I get up at 6am so if I am not up at 5:45 (almost exactly) she licks me to let me know it's almost time to get up. If my alarm goes off she comes back and doesn't stop licking me until I get up. If I bury my face she jumps on the bed (knowing dad will kick her butt) and pounces on me and I have to get up quickly before he wakes up.
She then goes back to sleep. Man she drives me insane...lol.

I always preferred the elliptical b/c i hated running. Recently I felt I needed a change and started running, and actually started to enjoy it until it recked havoc on my knee and hammy. I ended up with physical therapy and the orthepedic and PT told me running is so bad on your joints, so its back to the elliptical for me once i'm up to it. Theyalso suggested the bike and explained that it strenghtens the quads and other leg muscles a lot better than running and elliptical, so i'll incorporate that also

Now on my 8th day, weighed myself and still the same weight. This makes me happy because I have read some stories on the forum of people gaining weight after their free day.
I used my free day to do more social eatting than anything else. I ate limited amounts of what I wanted to just get the taste in my mouth. I did not find the free day rewarding in the sense that I had to quench any week old desires.
Best of luck fellow BFL'ers off to my morning workout.

I think you can do it in three or four days a week with success. Maybe not as fast but you still can I know because I have worked with people who see good results in this amount of time.

A 20 minute walk FIRST thing in the morning as soon as you get out of bed has enormous returns!! It will boost your metabolism all day. I would encourage you to try it at least during the summer months. I'm not a morning person either but did this last Aug to Sept. and really dropped some weight.
The other plus is it provides energy for the day and it is mild enough you can still get your regular work out in at your normal time.

Good Evening Fellow BFL'ers,
I was interested in getting some new workout music for my morning workouts. So name some of the best motivating songs that you listen to during your workout.
I will start the conversation with contributing one of my off the wall songs, Queen - Don't Stop Me Now.

Switch:Will Smith

Stacys mom: Fountains of Wayne(again with the smiling!)
Pretty fly(for a white guy):Offspring

Annie are you OK:Alien ant farm
Toxic:Britney spears

I may shuffle the order around before I load it up this weekend to maximize the beats to my HIIT pace but that is some of the new stuff I got. I re-did all my lifting songs, too. If you want them let me know. I have to have some serious fast thumping going through my brain to numb the PAIN of HIIT!!! And I need some deep bass to keep my lifing heavy.
Monica

Am I going nuts here?
Body for Life Forum Message by deadstick (39 posts) at 01:35 PM
Anyway, I believe what I said was
1) do what you're doing, it's working the hammies
2) Use dumbells and a platform (or barbells), or a Smith MAchine with a stepping block for weighted calf raises.
3) Put weight on your chest or use the ab machine (although many feel that the ab machine is useless, I can feel it myself).

WOHOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Yeah you heard me right I am HIGH! HIGH on LIFE damn it! Man, I just had a great workout today!!! It was a bit of a struggle being a girl and all today. You know that TOM. I was tired, irritated, and just not feeling my oats as usual. Plus, I knew I was in for a grueling workout that demanded a positive tough as nails mindset. So I was getting some stinkin thinkin! Well I got in there and started my routine.
Started talking to my friend. Always pumps me up because she is a figure/fitness competitor and has a physique that I strive for! So anyhoo ..... start doing my DB Presses set's and doing those 27.5's DB's for the last set I pumped out 10 ... I was supposed to go until Fatigue. Hehehehehe looks like we might be moving up the 30's soon getting closer to my 45 lb. DB Press goal!
Wohooooo! So, then I do my other stuff and this is where it gets good of course nothing but guys in the free weight section LOL. I am doing my barbell curls. Well ..... I have to do these extremely s-l-o-w on the negative. Hehehehee, I finally received R-E-S-P-E-C-T in the free weights section. ROFL.... Every guy in there was looking at my arms! You could see the striations, you could see all the muscles it was awesome! And I could see in the mirrors all my muscles :-) I was being admired for my muscles (BTW I looked like something the cat drug in so it was not for other things LMAO)! IT FELT GOOD! I used to be looked at like nuisance or maybe that was my self conscious self LOL?
OK now here is why it felt good! Because as I was doing these I was thinking back to the time when it was done with 8 lb DB's LOL back to 4 weeks into my first challenge and to where I am now. WOW I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD LOOK LIKE THIS! Nor lifting this much! For once I had a moment of standing there and feeling accomplishment and satisfaction! Usually I find everything wrong and everything that needs improvement! This is what 8 mo. on BFL has given me and I am so freaking proud and happy! I am so happy through the rough spots I have stuck it out! Through the good times I have ridden the wave. All and all sometimes my goal has seemed more than distant and I have become down or discouraged. But each time I have come back even stronger and with more courage than the time before! This is what BFL has given me the strength and courage to go on and become what I want to be and even better! So to all keep going you never know who is going to be staring back at you in the mirror in about 8 months. Lord knows I NEVER imagined this ... not even close! So to all of you just keep going the DREAM IS ALIVE and it is occurring in all of us! NEVER GIVE UP!

High Intensity Interval Training. It's the interval cardio "prescribed" in BFL.
While we're figuring out abbreviations, I still don't know whast KWIM is....anyone?
Body for Life Forum Message by harvestmeadow (20 posts) at 06:53 PM
If that is for the cardio then what is the abrv for weights?

I don't think there is an abrv. except maybe UBWO for 'upper body work out' and LBWO for 'lower body work out'.

You know you're on BFL when:
you are going to Florida on vacation and the first thing you pack? NOT your bathing suit - which you are feeling much more confident in - but your BFL bars!! And you contemplate on how to keep them from melting while trekking around in the heat!
On your free day you offer to split dessert - because you can't imagine shoveling all that in - like you used to!

I talked with hubby and we will change our late night getaways. This is a new thing for us. We hardly have any time together that is just us, and we've taken to once or twice a week running off after the kids are in bed and just being a couple. Krispy Kreeme is one of the few places that's open after 10:00. It was easy. But Eat N Park is 24 hours, and we can get coffee there without being surrounded by several hundred grease soaked confections begging me to eat them. I love our new found couple time.
Actually, after a talk with my sister I've decided some of that weight might be muscle after all. She reminded me that even though I haven't made strength gains, I probably HAVE gained some slow twitch muscle in the legs from all the running and spinning I've been doing.

Besides your significant other (DW,DH,BF,GF,etc.), who are you INVITIN' to the "PARTY"??? and Why???
Me?...I am invitin my brother (fiver years my junior). He recently survived a serious car accident and suffered a broken neck. He did not require surgery and just was given a clean bill of health after 3 months in a neckbrace. He was tipping the scale at just over 300 lbs and very out of shape. This has driven him to begin a healthier lifestyle. Like a lot of people, he doesn't have a "solid" plan in place and that can lead to easily falling off the wagon. My goal is to get him doing BFL with me........When??? I hope soon. Say a prayer for my bro!

Well let's see,
My fiance because he wants a Brad Pitt body (but we're waiting for his shoulder to heal) So far he's made huge strides in nutrition. I'm educating him slowly.
My Oldest Daughter because she's headed down the same path as me. The onlything that keeps her REALLY packing on the lbs is that she plays water polo and softball. Even with those she's adding at least 10 pounds a year to her tiny 5'2" frame. But, being the 'good mother' I'm waiting for her to come to me. I don't say anything about her weight. I'm hoping that when I start setting a good example she'll come to me for help naturally.
My Son - he's a natural Athlete, very active and competative. He's super skinny (He's been nicknamed 'bones' by his teammates before because you can see his spine) I catch him skipping meals to stay skinny - he's worried about turning into the stay puff marshmellow man like his dad. He also starts highschool this year and I'm really worried what Ideas the highschool coaches are going to put into his head about gaining a little mass. Again, I hope to set a good example and let him come to me.
And - as usual I've been long winded... heh

Oh - and my Mother.. heh
She was 'drug skinny' (as someone else called it here once) my entire life 5'1" and 100 lbs, but since cleaning up has steadily gained and gained. She talkes about losing weight all the time - there's no doubt that when I find success here, she'll be soon to follow in my footsteps.

I want to invite my husband, He is overweight, but he does eat well, but he will not exercise, he hates it. he works hard outside and does stuff but he will not do wts, he just isn;t interested, and he has a bad kneee that acts up when he walks alot or treadmill or bike or anything like that, but he is taking me on the cruise, we are going to book it, He loves that I am inspired and supports me but won't do it him self, he will do the meals but forget the exercise part.
who knows maybe after this curise he will get inspired to start.

Hi everybody! I haven't posted in tracker since it disappeared. Then, my internet connection is been down for nearly three weeks. All these weeks without your daily support have been hard. In the last few weeks I have seen my eating habits changing... Also, due to work problems and lack of motivation my workouts have been left either half way or not done at all. I tell to myself that I'll be more organized the following day, and then, life happens to me. I know that all of you are going to tell me: PLAN, PLAN AND PLAN!!!!! The thing is, I go to bed at 4 P.M. every morning and wake up at about 10 P.M. Not long, I guess. I have while I am working all good stuff like one of the BFL sandwiches and later on, a low fat yoghourt with protein powder, but when I get home I am so tired and hungry again that I reach for the easiest thing (usually peanut butter on toast or cheese). I feel that I am failing to keep on track much too often and I am worried that very soon the sense of guilt will disappear and I won't care any more. Basically, I need somebody to check on me often to make sure I am on track. I know it's not the best way, but I think of it like I am a bike and you guys are my stabilizing wheels. I need you bit time for a while before I can ride the bike on my own. Any volunteers?
Crucky

Hi folks- I have been doing this for over a year now, it's been a great experience and I thought the best way to build on success is to get more people involved and build a network of support. So I have been back and forth with a few other people in the Washington DC area about getting a local meeting group together, and after a few attempts we finally got it off the ground with our kickoff meeting this past Monday. At this point we have a core group of very motivated people, and we're looking to bring more folks on board to join in monthly meetings as well as online support. We just started a new group page- stop by or send me a message if you're interested in joining us:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BFL_DC
In keeping with everyone in our group setting goals, I am also starting a new challenge- this time I want to focus on consistency with diet and workouts, and hopefully make some more progress toward losing a few more pounds. Wish me luck!

A lot of times when someone wants to promote a book, they send a copy of it to radio stations in the hopes of getting the author interviewed on the air. So a coworker from another station just came in and showed me this book she got from an author, called "The Ultimate New York Body Plan: The Breakthrough Diet and Fitness System That Sheds Pounds and Reshapes Your Body FAST!", and across the top it says "Just 2 weeks to a TOTAL TRANSFORMATION!" It's by David Kirsch.
I'm not asking because I intend to try it. But she wanted to know what I knew about it and I've never heard of it. But glancing through the book, I see this:
"Because the program lasts just 14 days, you must minimize calorie consumption and maximize fat and calorie burning. To accomplish this task, you must strictly adhere to my A,B,C,D,E and F of nutrition, which basically means no alcohol, bread, starchy carbohydrates, dairy products, extra swees, fruit, and most fats.... In addition to following the A,B,C,D,E and F of nutrition, you will drink two protein shakes a day and eat one wholesome meal and two snacks."
Fitness looks like 45 minutes of cardio every day, plus either a 40-exercise cardio sculpting routine, a 10-exercise abs and core routine, or a 24-exercise legs and butt routine. Looks like you do the cardio sculpting every other day.
Any thoughts, comments, rumors? ;)

I would love to shake the hand of someone who could honestly follow a plan like that. Yikes!!!!!! So.... what happens after the 2 weeks??? Yeah, thats what I thought. You'd surely drop some "weight" but that all sounds pretty scary. Actually, before BFL I probably would have given it a shot. You get to the desperate point when you feel out of control, this just really exploits that! Whew, scary because a TON of people are going to try to do this. Lets pray for them! lol

sounds like he is going to make a mint! People really want things right now! and they will buy that book by the truck load eventhough it sounds like a bunch of hooey! If people could get into shape in 2 weeks without really having to do anything there wouldn't be a market for crap like this. OK yeah I'm pissy today, I passed up the chocolate cream pie that my loving family ate in front of me last night! Ohhhhhhhhhhhh and did I mention the chips and dip, and fried chicken? I ate my cold grilled chicken breast and carrots and went for a walk and now I am RANTING!!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1062 posts) at 10:40 AM
I'm goint to have to agree with Jamber. Same crap again just with a different spin. Looks like the carbs are low too - are they? So of course you'll drop some weight, most of it water probably.
Body for Life Forum Message by Renee (29 posts) at 10:44 AM
Oh Jeremy...
I'll be interested to hear what he has to say on this.
Nutritionally DID specify "starchy carbs", "MOST fats", "extra sweets"...all good advise.
The workout sounds very time intensive though. It can be done so much more efficiently. One thing I was taught was that it's about working the muscles to fatigue. If you have to spend two hours in a gym, you're doing something inefficiently.
I guess the key to all this extremeness is the whole TWO WEEKS point. One would lose alot of water weight. And it might be a good kick start. I'd have to read the whole book but from what you said it doesn't sound like it lays a foundation for how to continue after those two weeks. Two week so of ABCDEF isn't going to help if one goes right back to P&B (pizza and beer).
Renee
Body for Life Forum Message by melissab (107 posts) at 10:50 AM
The way I look at it is that if anyone actually sticks to it for the 2 weeks, they will lose weight...but then they're be gorging themselves with everything in sight on day 15 or shortly after and gain it all back plus more. Everyone ones a quick fix....truth is, there isn't one.
Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (127 posts) at 11:16 AM
Funny all that cardio and no carbs.... I can't see one person lasting on that for even a few days.
carbs=energy and for that amount of cardio. Low carb is great when leaning down but you still NEED them. Dear lord. I am gonna come out with the 20 sec. workout and see what happens. People just can't seem to grasp the idea hard work and patience comes with building a great body. Just can't wrap there head around it. Doh!!!! And people love to make money off of it.

So im in week 8 right now and everything is going great, workout are awsome and the eating is going good. However im dreading starting school again in the Fall, ill be going into my Junior Year and in college well its really hard to eat healthy. So ive been thinking a lot and have come to the conclusion that I WILL NOT go back to my old habits!!
I had the idea of starting a "Body-for-Life" organization at our University. We can meet in the mornings at the REC and workout and just be their for moral support. I was also thinking about making T-shirts and stuff. I spoken with friends and they sounds interested. However I dont know the rules and regulations of using the BFL name on flyers or T-shirts. I would love to get the ball rolling and start planning this. Let me know if you guys know of anything. Thanks so so much and this website is awsome!!!!!!!!! You guys are great Inspiration!!!!!!

I don't know about the copywright stuff but I think the whole thing sounds like a pretty fun idea. At the least you could do some motivational shirts of your own design and skip the actual EAS thing. Call EAS they will tell you what you need to know, They are always pretty helpful.

good luck to you with that. i think its a great idea, and i dont see why eas would have a problem with it. keep us posted on how it turns out. thats pretty cool of you to think of starting a group at school to help young people better them selves and get healthy!

I think it's a great idea too. I don't think you can print t-shirts but you should be ok with flyers saying it's a BFL support thing. You may want to only meet once a week though. People might be enthusiastic about meeting every morning but they will soon tire of it. Once a week would give them something to look forward to.
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1062 posts) at 03:32 PM
I think its an excellent idea, so what if you don't get to do the T shirts and contrary to what Buffy said maybe meeting every morning WOULD keep you away from the bad food choices. Good luck.

I deal with copyright issues daily and I agree that BFL may have an issues with using their specific name/logo (without it being official BFL gear), but you could certainly come up with a variation of it that may work (BFLU?) If you wanted to request permission, go to:

Great idea, though!!

While I'm no expert and still struggle myself with such things, I thought I would share some of the things I've done recently in the hope that this time I will stay FIRMLY on the wagon.
I read through this pretty good site on goal setting:
http://www.about-goal-setting.com/goal-setting-tutorial.html
and one of the first things they talk about is creating desire. and since I can't put it any clearer then they did.. I'll 'snip' from thier website:
Have you set goals, personal or business, and failed to achieve them?
Here is a crucial question: WHY?
The answer is simple:
Because you did not have a strong enough desire.
Some may argue with that: "But I did set goals with a strong desire and still I didn't get there!"
Sorry, but the desire was still not strong enough.
This article is about INTENSE desire. In other words a PASSION.
Rocket fuel is powerful. The energy it releases boggles the mind.
Intense desire can do the same for humans when they set goals.
Are you working on a goal right now?
Is it faltering or not progressing as fast as you would like?
Analyze the intensity of your desire.
How do you identify intense desire, passion?
It's what keeps people working all hours, up early, late to bed.
It's what fueled Stephen Spielberg from the age of 13 to be a movie director.
It's what powered Woopi Goldberg from childhood out of impossible circumstances to be a successful actress.
The desire dominates conversation, thinking, actions.
How do you intensify desire before you set goals?
The remaining part of this article will show you.
Question: Where do desires start? How do they form?
Unlike animals with their internal programming called instinct, the human mind has the colossal potential for reasoning, coming to conclusions, thinking things through.
So desires start in the mind.
Research has shown that impulses are transmitted through electro chemical processes across the synapses, tiny spaces less than one millionth of an inch across, which separate the brain cells or neurons.
Patterns and tracks are formed in our thinking processes. Think the same thought regularly and it becomes a habit forming a deep track like a well-used path across a field.
On the other hand, an occasional thought may pass through the mind and be forgotten just like a path seldom used which becomes overgrown.
Now apply this information to the kind of desires you need to cultivate before you set goals.
A desire may come into the mind and soon be forgotten in the everyday hum drum of life.
But keep thinking about it, keep your mind focused on it and what happens?
The desire becomes strong, very strong.
Then?
Action follows right after.
So back to our original question - how to intensify desire before you set goals?
Take as an illustration a work of art. After many years the picture suffers from pollution and discoloration. It may only be a shadow of its original glory.
But after it has gone through a meticulous restoration process what happens?
The picture breathes life and vibrancy again. Why?
Because now you see the detail. There are moods, objects, expressions in that picture you never saw or felt before.
Detail makes the difference.
How then can we intensify desire?
By listing details, particularly benefits.
Once the list gets past 20 or 30 benefits your goal becomes unstoppable!
Why not do this exercise today with one of your goals?
Have you set goals for your business to reach certain monetary targets this month, this quarter?
Making money for the sake of it after a while becomes mundane. There has to be something more.
Make a list of all the benefits from using that money.
What difference will it make to your family, your lifestyle, your enjoyment of life, your business growth?
What if you set goals to develop skills or awaken a dormant talent or ability?
Write down a huge list of the benefits this will bring you and your loved ones, or your business.
The more you write, the more details your mind conjures up, the greater the intensity of desire becomes.
This is the first step of goal achievement and the foundation.
With intense desire fueling your goals you have every chance of rocketing to success!
-------
Of course the rest of the website is just as uplifting.
One other thing I read that made a HUGE difference to me that goes along with making this list...
This list has to touch you somewhere emotionally. You should read over it often because when push comes to shove it needs to be MORE PAINFUL to NOT reach your goals, then it is to pass up that piece of cheese cake. And believe me - I know that there are some days when passing up the cheesecake seems really painful.

I peddled my a$$ off on that arc trainer today. I upped my resistance and I upped my speed and when I go to min. 20, I upped them both again. I actually felt my knees buckle at one point. Sure people looked, but I don’t care less.
So today or tomorrow whenever you go to the gym next, I challenge you to up your speed or resistance if it’s cardio day or if it’s weights, pick one area, Bi’s, Tri’s, quads whatever and increase your weight. Then come on back here and tell us all about it.
Especially for the people who have fallen off the wagon. This wagon’s moving fast and you need to strength and speed to get back on.
Who’s up for it?
By the way, I squeezed myself into a pair of size 8 pants this morning, it wasn’t pretty underneath, but it’s only a matter of time….

I challenge everyworkout, I try to up my speed or minutes or level on the bike , ellipitcal or treadmill and with the wts.
I did squats this morning with 40 lbs, that's a 1st, and I never dreamed I'd ever be able, I was struggling with no wts on the bar, now I'm at 40lbs in just 6 weeks time.
I'm GETTEN HER DONE!!

I had to sit there a good couple minutes after I was done, because I didn't want to stand up just to flop on the ground, lol! One of my best workouts yet. I swear people thought I was drunk on my walk to the locker room!! lol!

Aunt Pitty, COME BACK!!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by Twiztid (2 posts) at 01:55 PM
So, I am OFFICIALLY Day #4 into my challenege, but had a weird Day #3.
I went for a FIT TEST at my gym, as I wanted my BF% and everything measured.
She took my blood pressure and it was 139/89 which is "high-normal". She RE-DID it a couple times, and ended up with an average of 140/90... which is borderline Stage #1 Hypertension.
Now, I realize my lifetsyle was appaling -- and I even had my doc say it was "a bit high" when I was to see him last and he suggested that I drop some weight.
The trainer told me to drop weights for 2 weeks and do 5 or 6 days a week of Cardio, and even the BFL diet can be bad for my blood pressure, but keep on it as the list of foods I mentioned she said were OK.
I talked to the owner of the gym after that, as I know him and he asked me how I was doing... he kinda rolled his eyes when I told her what she said, but he said there is truth to it -- as when I am lifting weights, especially chest exercises my BP is going up. I could be hitting HIGH levels while working out and that can put me at some risks of dizziness, vision and headache problems etc...
So, I am going to see my doctor. I called my Uncle who is a Paramedic and he told me not to worry. I am about 30lbs overweight and my diet WAS bad.. so that is probably the cause.
MY PROBLEM? I am scared to death now.
I am scared of even doing CARDIO.. I am afraid I am gonna die of a heart attack or something.
What's worse? I have anxiety as it is... so, I have chest pains right now -- and will continue to have them during and after working out, all because I am LOOKING for chest pains. It's a long story, hehe... but I've been like this since I was a kid -- hypocondriac all the way.
The Manager said that these guys who gained 50 lbs or so come in after 6 years in a gym and go right to the weights and no cardio, and they are at a HUGE risk of problems...
Your thoughts???

Listen to your doctor and your body. Take it easy at 1st to get comfortable with the exercises, then ramp it up. You are in this for LIFE, right? You can't reverse years of abusing your body in less than a week.

Another thing for everyone is that when you're lifting weights, a lot of us hold our breath and don't realize it. When you do that, you put a lot of stress on the walls of your heart, causing them to thicken, which is exactly what hypertension does.
Breath out on the difficult part of your weightlifting and although you may not be able to do as much weight this way, you are saving your heart. Also, your form will be more concentrated to having your muscles do the work, and not your rigid chest.
The cardio will certainly help your hypertension symptoms (I find it more so if you do the workout first thing int he morning).

What the hell happened here again this afternoon? What could possibly been so bad that Aunt Pitty has left and Stone Oak???????
I don't want to hear "you don't want to hear". I do want to hear because quite honestly this is getting a bit ridiculous when there's a comment made & then woosh someone's gone. Who's next??
We're here for support, dialogue, fun or just plain boredom. This is not an emotional hostage situation and honestly I'm getting sick of it. You leave the computer for a few hours, a few days and the next thing you know "a friend" is gone. Not exactly my idea of a friend. I'M PISSED OFF!

I agree. I think it was meant as a light hearted compliment. We are all here to support each other. When you post your pic in an open forum on the net, it becomes public property to some extent. Stone deleted his profile because he initially started a thread bringing attention to bretski's picture and made a comment that I suppose in retrospect wasn't funny. Not my place to repeat it although it wasn't a huge deal. In the end I can see how Aunt was offended although I initially thought it was funny. May have touched on a nerve or something in her. She is still at Lifers if you want to PM her and ask her to come back. I already did and it sounded like she was still upset. I do hope she comes back and if you read this Colleen I am in no way undermining the hurt you feel but I do believe that it was not meant to be malicious. xo

So here I am, at work, in a hotel in a small town that has a McDonalds-maybe.I started work 5 days ago and haven't been home since. Actually I was supposed to be done late last night, but since we don't have enough crewmembers (airline), I got another day tacked on. In 12 days, I have been home for two.
SO--it's not possible to go home and get more food, nor do they sell shakes in the airport (much less healthy food), and when we fly 6 flights a day with 20 min in between, it's not possible to get food. So my bag weighs a MILLION pounds and has those EAS AdvantEDGE shakes in it, but yeah--I finished those. So I have peanuts, and I know I'm just messing up this challenge because of the difficulty in doing the workouts I want to do (with weights and smith machine and all that) and the EATING!!!
So I am jealous of your tupperware and fresh food, and I think I need to come up with a seriously better idea on how to do this!! (I already carry the max bags allowed, so it would be hard to tote food from home). Sometimes a gas station near the hotel has protein bars, but I'm picky with the sugar and which kind. We aren't always near a restaurant or store--but in some towns, I can walk to a grocery store and can grab some stuff.
You guys inspire me, anyway, and I guess I am just ranting!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by MegsBFLMomma (105 posts) at 03:15 PM
GreenTea - that must be hard not having the fresh food accessable all the time. I take it for granted!
Have you thought about rice cakes to take with you for a carb? They're light weight, and there are some decent tasting flavored ones out there.
Hope you find something that works besides the bars/shakes!
Micky

This is a great point you bring up - I have done a bit of traveling this year and I agree, between the airplane food and the airports in certain cities, there is a lack of healthy options. Not to complain against your employer (not sure which one it is), but the reason I love Song and Jet Blue is that they seemed to have realized this and are offering healthy choices in snacks/food. I take for granted that I work in a building that has a food court that actually offers grilled chicken and veggies, and there is a full-service supermarket right across the street (just came back from there with fresh sliced turkey and Yoplait!). I give you kudos for doing all you do!!

I was on a roll, running for my cardio, but now I have such bad heel pain that I went to the doc and he says I have plantar fasciitis--a frayed tendon in my foot that causes my heel to feel like it's been hit with a hammer like it's bruised. So I walk on my tiptoe like a dork!
Has this happened to anyone here? I guess orthotics fix it and I am waiting on mine so I can run or walk again. I heard they work great once they've had a chance to correct the footstrike.
Body for Life Forum Message by buffy-the-fatlayer-slayer (159 posts) at 03:12 PM
Heal spurs?
Can be very painful...I've heard if you roll your foot around on a ball, I'm not sure if it's a tennis ball or golf ball, when you get up in the morning it will help ease the pain a bit to get you moving around.
Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (42 posts) at 03:18 PM
When is the last time you bought new shoes? When I was running I could always tell after a few months when my shin's started hurting that it was time for new shoes.

Body for Life Forum Message by JayB (16 posts) at 03:28 PM
Happened to me following my first 10k hill walk...went to a specialty running shop they actually put me on a treadmill and video taped my stride then fit me with the proper shoes and inserts designed to help with this. The shoes were like $125 plus $20 for the inserts I know they sell the same shoes for less at other stores but the service was worth the extra $25-30 no pain at all since I switched.
Body for Life Forum Message by julesboston (40 posts) at 03:35 PM
I concur - I had HORRIBLE heel spurs (PF). Ouch. Anyway, I brought a different brand of running shoes and along with physical therapy (like buffy said), had great success. Now I make sure to get new sneakers every 4 months or so (depending on how much cardio I'm doing!). Good luck!

I used these gel cups in all of my shoe and eventually the pain went away.
Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (238 posts) at 03:48 PM
Oh my - let me tell you about heal pain... heh
about three years ago I was training for a marathon - One day I dramatically increased my milage. My ankles were a little sore but I didn't think anything of it. By the end of the day I couldn't put weight on the heal of either foot.
Eventually I went to the Dr and found out I had Plantar Fasciitis - a fancy word for tearing the ligament the runs from the ball of your foot to the heal. this is often called a 'heel spur' because after doiong this - scar tissue can form on the heal where the ligament attaches. It is not the 'spur' that causes the pain, but the damage to the ligament...
there are a lot of treatments - more of them involve lots of rest
There is an invaluable amount of information at this site:
http://heelspurs.com/index.html
a great site for taping your feet if you have this problem here:
http://www.nismat.org/traincor/pl_fasciitis.html
You'll also want to have your gate analyed by a PROFESSIONAL (go to a running shoe store) and buy shoes that are built for your feet. The reason I blew out my feet was because I was wearing 'trail running shoes' and running on asphalt. Plus I'm an over pronation my ankles roll to the inside when I run (putting more preasure on the arch of my foot)
Body for Life Forum Message by harvestmeadow (20 posts) at 07:06 PM
I don't get heal pain but I get blisters. I have bought the expensive running and walking shoes and I have gotten special inserts for my feet, but none of it seems to work. Any advice on that?
Monica
Body for Life Forum Message by GreenTea (8 posts) at 08:26 PM
Thanks, guys, I am going to try the running store for diff shoes. I have the Nikes with the springs and I bought them last year. I bought heel cups because I run on asphalt, too, and thought it was because I needed more cushioning.
Doc says no, not more cushining, just need corrective positioning of foot. I got x-rays and no heel spurs yet (I don't think I could get them because I can't even walk NOW and this is when they form).
Tks for the advice, and I wish this on NO ONE!

Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (238 posts) at 09:15 PM
Ice, Ibprophen, rest AND don't walk around barefoot for about three months. If you have torn the ligament (as I did) then you'll need at least that long to completely mend.
Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (1262 posts) at 11:19 PM
Basic advice I've heard to prevent injury while running:
1) get running shoes fitted at specialty running stores, NOT some place like Foot Locker
2) do not increase your mileage by more than 10% per week
3) replace your shoes every 300-500 miles, depending on the shoe and how heavy your are (the heavier you are, the more it wears out the spring in the shoe) even if they don't look worn on the soles
4) if you have not been running long (< 1 year) avoid regular speed work and hill running. Your body needs time to build up just the right musculature to protect your joints, ligaments etc. from the heavy stress this kind of running puts on them.
5) stretch before and after running. When stretching before running make sure muscles are well warmed up first. Stretching a cold muscle can cause injury.
That really stinks about the plantar fasciitis. I had it when I was pregnant with #4, and walking was agony for the first hour or so after waking up ever day. It did get better though. Good luck!

I wanted to share this with everyone because I think It will help alot of people struggling right now.
This is the lesson for Life by Bill Phillips for Day 33 of the success journal.
Forgivess is a priceless gift you can give for free
One of the things that I;ve noticed about people in gereral is that they are too darned hard on themselves. I see so many good people that don't even know just how good they are. They carry bags of guilt, filled to the brim, with them day and night, expending precious energy. That Baggage is like pounds of unhealthy bodyfat. The process of breaking free is to forgive. Forgive others and forgive yourself. Prehaps you haven't cared for your body the way you feel you should have. You may have broken self Promises or let yourself down. If so you are not alone. Virtuallly everyone has felt this way at one point. But you don't have to and can't afford to let that stop you now. The key is to forgive and vow to try harder and do better in the future.
Drop the baggage and move on!
It's a new Day start again
It's always to soon to quit, so please don't quit to soon!
Let's GET*HER*DONE!!!

Hi All!!!
In one week, Russ40 and I are having our photos professionally taken for C2. I bought a new suit, but I am not sure if I like it. I just posted new photos under C2W10 in my profile. I really need HONEST opinions. Do you like the red and white suit or the black one. Russ will be wearing red posing trunks. BTW, the tan lines should be gone by photo day....tanning every day til then. I am looking for everyone to be straight with me and help me choose.
RED or BLACK????

I like them both but I think the black will show you off the best. So my vote is the black. This is a silly opinion but here it is, I like printed suits for walking around the beach or pool and solid for pictures. For some reason the solids show you off better (to my eyes anyway).

Alright, So I am having an unplanned free day today :( I normally do this on Saturday and way in early before the day commences. So now what? I guess I should be glad I'm in C2 W2 and this is a first for me. Should I just bag the weigh in and do it next sat? I slipped up today but has been a tough week and I plan on using today to refocus and change some things with my eating for the rest of the challenge. First of all, I need to make the meal plans in advance, but also do the cal and ratios BEFOREHAND so I don't blow that part off at night when I'm tired. So far I figured I'm"close enough" when we all know thats probably a bunch of Malarkey. Actually, I think I am eating too little so its time to start crunching some numbers. If any of you do this and have any input it would be very welcome. I am thinking of using the same 6-10 meals and just rotating them for simplicity sake. I am not a numbers kind of gal and I feel its a real hassle. But I feel MORE strongly that to really make some strides with just the last 15 or 20 lbs I may have to get out of my comfort zone and do it. *SIGH*
Any suggestions??

Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (238 posts) at 06:44 PM
well - my suggestion would be to weigh in anyway... You may not see a loss this week, but that just means you'll have a big jump the next week's weigh in. in the end it will all balance out.
Body for Life Forum Message by melissab (107 posts) at 07:03 PM
I would do a weigh in too...it may surprise you and the extra calories may not affect you too much. Or it could be the other way around and you can look back on it in the future and see where you went wrong??? Either way, I say do the weigh in.
Body for Life Forum Message by harvestmeadow (20 posts) at 07:11 PM
Is there something I am missing? Why can't you just weigh in on the normal day? Why should it matter when you have your free day?
Monica
Sorry for being so uneducated in this.
Body for Life Forum Message by melissab (107 posts) at 07:17 PM
Monica, most people like to do their weigh in at the end of the week, just before they have a free day since that can make the scale jump. Ex: My free day is Sunday so I like to weigh in on Sunday mornings, before I begin eating any unauthorized foods. She's worried that having a free day before planned will move the # on the scale up from where it could have been.

Drink a Huge glass of water then brush your teeth.
Or make some protein pudding :)
Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (238 posts) at 06:51 PM
find good sweet choices... Fruit - fruit smoothies - treats made with splenda... all these things are what get me through.
One thing to note - cravings will usually go away within 12 minutes. Do what you can to take your mind off what you are craving. Don't dell on it and agonize over what you 'can't have'. Remember - there is nothing you haven't taisted before. I've also found that when the cravings are really bad that Listerine breath strips do a LOT to take my mind off sweets. I mean really whats going to taste good after you've had one of THOSE in your mouth??
worse comes to worse - try a little adversion therapy...
There is this product out there called Sugar Blocker gum... An exerpt from a website that sells the stuff (and I can tell you this isn't some 'diet wonder pill fraud' it really works)
http://www.herbcottage.com/SBInfo.htm#About%20SugarBlocker%20Gum
The herb found in SugarBlocker gum is known as a sugar analog. Although that may sound somewhat technical, a sugar analog simply means that the herbs chemical structure is almost identical to sucrose. As you chew the gum, the herb binds to all the receptor sites on your tongue and blocks the sugar from touching the chemical receptors for the taste sensation of anything sweet. Because the herb only blocks the chemical receptors for sweets, the taste of bitter, sour and salty can still be tasted. Consequently, SugarBlocker Gum blocks your ability to taste sweets, but does not block your ability to taste other foods. Thus, chicken breast, salads, pasta, vegetables and any other food void of sugar will taste completely normal. Yet, cookies, pastries, candy bars, cakes and pies will be very unpleasant. Because alcohol is a form of sugar, SugarBlocker Gum exerts the same effects on alcohol as it does on other sweets. Basically, wine will taste like vinegar, and beer will taste like, well, urine.

I agree with brushing your teeth...that's a big one. Another thing I do is chop up a Low Sugar Detour Bar into 8 small chunks. I put these in a ziploc bag and stick in the freezer. Anytime I'm having a chocolate or sweet craving, I grab one or two chunks, and I'm good! Plus when they're frozen, they take longer to eat!!

Try theprotein pudding. I make sugar free/fat free pudding mix with skim milk and put protein powder in it. It really helps my sweet craving. Another one I just discovered and fell in love with is the fried banana with maple syrup on cottage cheese out of the EFL book. You free banana sliced up in pam, add some sugar free maple syrup in it to heat then put on top of cottage cheese. Book says to heat the cottage cheese, but i prefer it cold. I really liked it and have it almost every day for a snack

low calorie Jell-o works for me - esp. those evening dessert cravings for candy (I love anything gummy) I add a little less water, chill till set and cut into cubes, from there you can eat it bit by bit, or freeze it, or I take it to work with me in the mornings to snack on if need be.

I dunno if you get Cadbury chocolate bars in the States. (CANDY bars in Americun speak) But there is a chocolate bar called Cadbury THINS and it is 100 calories for 18g. Milk chocolate and dark chocolate is available. Just enought satisfy the craving without too much impact I think.
100 calories, 11 g carb, 5g fat, 2g protein. I guess you could ease your conscience by eating a 1/4 cup of cottage cheese after or before...

Hi gang!
I haven't worked out since last week because I haven't been feeling too well. It feels like a stomach bug but with my underlying illness I'm always wondering if something else isn't going on.
I also haven't seen the scale move much lately and even my measurements haven't gone down hardly at all. So today I started looking at the big picture of my program and wondering when I would finally get down to my goal weight of 170-180 lbs. I'm grateful to have lost so much weight but I'm really anxious to break out of the 210 lb plateau and get below 200... As a result, I came up with a few areas I can improve on such as drink more water, more vegetables, etc...
But after my shower today, I noticed something had changed with my thighs. There is new muscle on the top outside area that I don't remember seeing before. Looking closer I also could see that my thighs were noticeably leaner and more muscular than even a few weeks ago. It was as if "The Muscle Elves" snuck in while I was distracted by the scale - stealing some fat and adding some muscle - and then slipped quietly away without me even noticing. Well, this prompted another one of those self-dialogs which by now I'm sure has quite a few people thinking "Yeah..he's been single too long..."
"Would you look at that Jim! Man! That wasn't like that a few weeks ago. That may be a small change but it's a big improvement! You don't get muscle like that without months of training. See! Your weight training and biking REALLY is making a difference! Yes! There are things you can do better Jim... BUT PLEASE! Don't overlook the little changes like this that are taking place in your body. Just keep doing your part buddy and trust me!"The Muscle Elves" will keep doing theirs..."
The point here is that you can easily gloss over the little victories and not realize that they are just as important as winning the big battles in rebuilding your body and your life...
BTW -- I just checked my resting heart rate. It's now around 48! It hasn't been that low in 10 years! Yet another easy-to-miss sign of progress! I guess sometimes you just have to stay the course and have faith - knowing that Body-For-Life works...

I noticed my thighs the other day too. I almost always wear pants to the gym(I need a new gym wardrobe badly) and when I was doing my abs on the stability ball I loked down and my quads were much higher than my knees when my thigh was parrallel to the floor. Weeee-haw!! It was a good feeling, since just a couple months ago my quads were practically concave.
Yay for thigh muscle!!!!
Lets celebrate all these little victories that all add up to one AWESOME transformation!!!

The Muscle Elves hmm, I'll be on the look out for those guys. I wonder if they are related to the "Fat Fairy". Hey Guys,
I did something kinda cheesy, but I have to admit it helps me keep motivated. I took my Week 3 picture, and lost some weight via photoshop. Boy I sure wish that my fat would really melt away that fast!....
So check it out, I posted the comparison photo in my profile.
But it actually helped me see what my body has the potential to look like, and hey, I think it could actually look better with the muscle definition I'm hoping to get. Anyhow, I thought it was kind of cool, and it helps remind me that my body is just like any other person's, and has the potential to look better. Sometimes I start thinking negative thoughts and think to myself "maybe I was always meant to be fat" since I've never known what it was like to not be carrying extra pounds.
I think I can look pretty good if I stick to this! What do you guys think?! :)

25mg ephedra, 200 mg caffeine and 1 aspirin.
Caffeine in 8 oz cup of:
Coffee, Drip 115-175
Coffee, Brewed 80-135
Coffee, Espresso (2 ounces) 100
Coffee, Instant 65-100
I guess the aspirin thins your blood, but not sure.

Again from Hussman:
http://www.hussman.org/fitness/bfl.htm#workouts
Bill's "20-minute aerobics solution" is a type of "High Intensity Interval Training" (HIIT). Bill's solution is very effective. You start with two minutes of warmup at a level 5, then move to level 6 for a minute, then 7. This portion of your workout is aerobic. You should be able to carry on a broken conversation, breathing deeply but not out of breath. Your level 8 should have more bounce and push to it, taking you slightly out of your comfort range. Your level 9 effort is a "high point" and should be somewhat anaerobic. The goal is not extreme exertion. If you aren't getting somewhat winded and you don't feel a modest burn in your muscles near the end, it's probably too easy, but no gasping as if you've been held underwater.
After your level 9, you drop back down to a level 6 (that's a level 6, not a 2 or 3). As noted on my main fitness page, you're shooting for "active recovery", or what physiologists sometimes call "recovery under stress."
The fourth time through this cycle, you add a "high point" - a level 10, after your 9. No gasping allowed, but you should be getting winded. Though you are taking in a lot of oxygen at this point, the energy demands are still greater than can be produced aerobically, so you are challenging your lactate system. After your 10, you'll get the most benefit from your 10 if you get your breath back to a fully conversational level before stopping. That may take an extra few minutes, but "Twenty-three-and-a-half minute aerobics solution" just doesn't have the same ring to it.
How do you gauge a high point? Kelly Adair says "My high point is when I’m going 'Boy, I don’t know if I can last one more minute of this'" On the strength training, "if you’re not making that ugly face at the end of those last few reps then you’re probably not pushing yourself as hard as you could.” That said, always check with your physician first to be sure what level of intensity is appropriate for you - particularly if you have any family history of high blood pressure, heart attack, or stroke. ALWAYS EXHALE during the concentric motion. Never hold your breath.
http://www.hussman.org/fitness/qanda.htm#gasping
Q John, Mine is not a question so much as it is clarification. You say level 9 & 10 shouldn't leave you gasping for air. Especially the last 20 seconds of my "10" minute, I'm sucking wind harder that a Hoover. When I get off the Stairclimber not only am I toast but my legs are wobbly (even after level 5 for a minute). I thought that was the point - extreme exertion? BTW - Great site!
A Thanks for your note. The point of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) isn't so much to cause extreme exertion. You want a well-focused effort to go above the lactate threshhold, so that you're challenging your anaerobic systems. More simply, you're trying to drive the body to deplete its glycogen stores. As one report puts it:
"Studies indicate that the high-intensity portion of the workout demands so much quick energy that the body does not have stored sugars and carbohydrates left over. This may stimulate the body to metabolize fat in what might be termed the "afterburn."
The studies indicate that this afterburn can raise your metabolic rate for as much as 21 hours. So yes, you should be breathing hard, and your muscles should burn by the end of your 10. Wobbly legs are fine. But if you're audibly gasping as if you've been held underwater, dizzy, or unable to maintain balance, you've gone beyond challenging your CP and lactate systems, and have crossed over into cardiovascular and pulmonary stress. If you're healthy, it doesn't do you any good, and it's downright dangerous for people who are unhealthy or have undiagnosed heart problems.
So there are extremely good benefits in using the high intensity, and you should be working very hard during your high points. But no screeching, audible gasping. Hope that helps!
http://www.hussman.org/fitness/qanda.htm#heartrate
Q John, Thanks for the excellent information on your site. A question about heart rates: I'm 42, male, 5'10" 180 lbs. and spent 20 years in the Army. During any type of running, my heart rate has always been in the 170 - 185 range which all the books say is too highfor my age (even when I was 35). I've never experienced any discomfort with this other than breathing hard. When I retired, I bought a polar monitor which verified my pulse readings. When I run, I'm exercising way beyond the "70 % or 80 %" MHR which are the recommended zones. And I don't have to sprint to get my rate up there. 9 or 10 minute miles do it. Do you see any problems with this? I also notice that I sweat a lot more than others. During PT runs, my gray tshirt is absolutely saturated with sweat; while others have a ring around the collar and under the arms. Any connections? I'm now a police officer and Swat team member so fitness ain't just a wannabe; it's a gottabe for me and my team members. I'm in week 4 and working it. Believe me we appreciate all your hard work on the research you've done. Thanks
A Boy, apart from the 20 years in the Army and slightly more Swat team experience, you sound just like me. Seriously, I think we have what Covert Bailey calls "Kawasaki" hearts, as opposed to the slower "Diesel" variety. My heart rate also goes beyond the tables and I get just soaked, so there may very well be a connection (probably heat dissipation), but I'd have to research it to get a firm answer. Because heart rates vary more than those heart monitors seem to assume, I prefer to gauge intensity by breathing and "comfort level" - my 6 and 7 are "conversational" - breathing deeply, but able to carry on a broken conversation. My 8 gets some extra "push" and "bounce" to it, and it takes me just out of my comfort level. A 9 gets me winded and produces a "burn" in my legs by the end of it, and a 10 is the highest level I can sustain for a full minute without gasping as if I've been held underwater (i.e. no undue cardiovascular or pulmonary stress). Those reference points let me gauge my intensity even if I'm running with a stopwatch. Now, since I've got some heart history in my family, I got an echocardiogram done before I started, but assuming you don't have those concerns, I can tell you that those heart rate tables do seem to be "averages", and that some of us fall outside that range, just like the tails of a bell curve. Hope that helps! Good luck, and may you always be safe out there. Take care - John

BFL is NOT about starving yourself! So please keep eating! This whole program, is about changing your inner and outter self...about making CHOICES!
Add an extra meal, or an extra snack, just keep the portions right and CHOOSE the right foods.
I had a horrible 3rd week, hungary, tired, headaches, cravings...the only thing I could do besides keep eating was sleep.
You'll get through it! I promise!

Are you eating a lot of veggies at least with 3 of your meals?
Sometimes it can be increased protein in take. If you have an increase to protein sometimes it can be hard to digest. There are a number of reasons but sometimes it can be lack of fibrous veggies.

I was like that before hand but it actually kinda got worse when I first started BFL back in April. The first month was tough and I didn't "go" much. But by week 8, something happened. I'm hoping my metabolism sped up or something but I started "going" every day. Between challenges I took an unplanned month or so off and got sluggish again but now C2 and into week 2 I am back to my every day schedule. I haven't been this regular in a long time. here's to hoping it works for you too!!! Oh yeah, everyone here in the beginning urged me to get my water intake up to a full gallon a day and once I did, that started to make a difference too.

I would be surprised by the lack of it. I've only been doing BFL for 3 weeks and I am very regular. I didn't have much of a problem before, but I never have a "difficult" one anymore!! HA! I would also say to up your veggie intake and drink a LOT of water.
