Seems like so much good health can be achieved just by NOT doing things. Yes there are of awesomely optimal things that should BE done (weight training, fish oil, etc) but wow I wonder just what % of "health" (as opposed to fitness) comes from avoiding the things that just drag you down.

As my subject line indicates, I think chips, crackers, beer, and pop are some of the biggest offenders in terms of things people consume that really keep them from reaching their goals on schedule (of course many of the folks consuming mass quantities of these items probably don't have real health goals) ...
I think people have their pet junk: a chips person might not be a cracker person, a beer person might not be a pop person ... but I would be willing to wager that many many people have got the combo vice: chips and beer, crackers and pop, chips and pop, etc.

I see unhealthy people around me, in the mall, in grocery stores, and chips crackers beer and pop are a very common denominator.
There are other forms of kryptonite of course (mine are chocolate and cheesecake ) but these 4 top the charts from what I've been able to observe.

Further thoughts on how to achieve better health simply through avoidance of bad stuff?

If you are avoiding the bac stuff, doesn't that mean you ARE choosing the healthy stuff?  Seems like they are the same, to me.

My list would be bread, pasta, cheese and whole milk.

Hi Michele!! We've missed you!

It's chocolate all the way.  I have a terrible sweet tooth.  Chips & stuff don't usually tempt me -- although I do love chips & guac or salsa, I don't have a problem going to a Mex restaurant on a regular basis & not having any while those around me do.  I hate beer, I tell people that it's why I was forced to leave WI  Crackers, it depends on what the dip is.  Pop, not a problem.  Ooh, pasta & pizza, there's another one, YUMMY!!

Oh, so how to avoid??  I take my free day (or meal) & if it's not free day, I don't have it.  Usually that's enough to do it for me.  If I have leftover desserts (homemade), I put them in the extra fridge/freezer so they're not right in front of me, or give them away.

My hardest thing is a special dinner or family gathering -- I save almost all of my free meals for those -- or when I travel back to WI to visit my DD & her fam, incl 4 kids.  I immediately regress to the young mom I used to be & eat all their treats & stuff

Jeanne

Pop + Party Mix = YUMMY salty goodness, throw a couple of M&Ms on there and a full meal deal. I miss crunch and carrots just aren't the same as the crunch of pretzels.
